Creating and Balancing Tones

Q: How do I balance the volume of my presets?

A: The best way to balance your presets is to first store your cleanest/quietest preset with the channel volume at 90-95%. You can then balance the volume of your other presets against this preset by using the channel volume control and storing each sound. This is the sole purpose of the Channel/Tone Volume knob. It does not increase/decrease gain, change tone or otherwise alter the preset - just volume.

Q: How do I create a sound like an artist?

A: There are a number of ways to create patches to emulate a specific guitarist. Perhaps the quickest/easiest way is to find a patch in your Line 6 unit that is similar to the sound you are trying to emulate, make the modifications necessary and then rename/save the patch (see your manual for the specifics on how to save your patches). You can also find ready-made Line 6 tones in the style of particular artists at www.customtone.com, then install these tones on your Line 6 unit. We recommend doing a bit of research on the guitarist you are trying to emulate if you are interested in creating patches “from scratch”. Web sites such as www.guitargeek.com and www.uberproaudio.com, list the rigs of many well-known guitarists, and Guitar and recording magazines often print accurate diagrams and layouts (sometimes with the actual microphones used and distance from the cabinet). Finding the following information will help you create an artist tone from scratch:

· Amplifier, speaker and cabinet. Generally speaking, open-back guitar cabinets (such as a 2x12 cabinet found on many Fender® and Vox® amplifiers) will have less low-end response than a closed-back cabinet (such as a 4x12 closed-back cabinet used with many Marshall® and Mesa/Boogie® amplifiers)

· Guitar (make/model) and pickup type. Alder or Ash bodies (commonly found on many Fender® guitars) sound different than mahogany bodies with or without maple tops (commonly found on many Gibson® guitars). Single-coil pickups (often used for bright/clean tones) sound different than humbuckers (which sound darker than single-coil pickups but not as noisy when used for higher gain tones)

· Pedals, effects and signal-chain placement. Effects can drastically change a guitar tone so you should know what effects were used and where they were placed (between the instrument and amplifier, or after the amplifier).

· Microphone type and placement. If possible, find out the kind of microphone used to record the tone and its angle and distance from the speaker. All of these play a significant role in changing the sound.

Java Errors with Line 6 Edit and Workbench

Q: I am receiving a java error when I try to run Line 6 Edit 3.0 or Workbench 1.5?

A: Line 6 Edit and Workbench require Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5 will operate correctly, and will experience a "Java Error" if JRE 5 is not detected on the computer. You can manually download and install JRE 5 from the following location on the Sun Microsystems website:

This document explains how to update your FBV Mk II (Express or Shortboard) controller using Line 6 Monkey. You will need to connect your FBV Mk II controller using a USB cable to your computer, then run the Line 6 Monkey application. If your software is out of date (or you want to reflash for trouble shooting purposes), you will want to update using the following directions.

Line 6 Monkey Installation and F.A.Q.USB Connectivity with Line 6 Devices

1) If Monkey asks you to register your gear, you can select “remind me later”.

2) Select the "flash memory" to highlight (in blue), then select "update selection".

3) Select "I Accept" for the software agreement and select “continue”.

4) Decide if you want to restore the factory defaults, then select your choice (if you are reloading software for trouble shooting, it is best to rest

5) Select "yes" to continue to the update

6) wait for the flash memory to update and be installed, then select "OK"

7) When your unit has been sucessfully updated Line 6 Monkey will look like this:

Q: How do I engage the Wah?

A: To engage the wah, simply press toe down on the foot pedal until it clicks over and you see the WAH light turn on. It takes a fair amount of pressure to get it to click over (if you get no results, try putting your entire weight on the toe position when you are standing). Over time this function will get easier.

Data Cable FAQs

Q: What type of cables are used with the Line 6 controllers?

A: The Line 6 controllers use a standard CAT-5/6 cable with standard RJ-45 ends. These cables are very common in data connection and can be found in most local computer outlets. The FBV controllers ship with a black 25' cable included in the box.

Q: How long can the CAT-5/6 cable be before I have communication errors?

A: We have tested with cable lengths up to 50' with no problems.

Q: Can I use a "cross-over" CAT-5/6 cable with Line 6 gear?

A: You CANNOT use a "crossover" CAT-5 cable, as it may send voltage to unintended locations of your FBV Controller and damage the unit.

Q: I used a new data cable to connect my FBV series controller and I saw smoke?

A: It sounds as if you may have used a network "cross-over" cable, which has a different wiring configuration (but the same RJ-45 connection) as a standard CAT-5/6 cable. If this is the case, voltage that was intended to power the the pedal were routed to the wrong place, resulting in damage to the pedal. This FBV series controller will need to repaired/replaced.

Q: Can I use a CAT-5 data splitter from my Line 6 unit(s) to run multiple FBV controllers on stage (or run multiple Line 6 units from a single controller)?

A: No, The FBV controller was designed to work on its own with a single amplifier. If you feel this is a feature you would want to implement, please submit a feature request:

External Expresion Pedal FAQs

Q: What type of pedal do I need to use for an optional expression pedal with my Line 6 controller?

A: The Line 6 EX-1 is the recommended expression pedal for additional control, and is connected to your Line 6 controller with a standard mono guitar cable. It utilizes a 10k Ohm pot.

Q: When using an EX-1 with my shortboard, can I re-assign the onboard expression pedal to something other than volume?

A: Unfortunately no, the volume pedal on the FBV shortboard can not be reassigned to another function.

Q: What is the difference between the original FBV series and the Mk II series Express and Shortboard controllers?

A: The Mk II series Express and shortboards will control any device that could be controlled by the Mk I controller. See the following information for more specific physical changes:

- The Mk II units have a USB port that can be used to control Line 6 device or your Midi Controlable computer application.

- The Mk II shortboard viewscreen is 4 5/8"wide by 1/2" high, as compared to the 6" wide by 3/4" high viewscreen found on the Mk I shortboard.

Q: Can I use the Mk II series pedals as an interface to my "MIDI-only" amplifier (i.e. Axsys, Flextone, HD147, Vetta) to update via Line 6 Monkey or edit using Line 6 edit?

A: No, the Mk II device will not act as an interface for your "MIDI-only" device.

Q: Is it possible to control MIDI devices using the Floorboard via my Line 6 unit? For example, when I change to a specific channel/bank on the Line 6 unit, is a corresponding MIDI Program Change message sent from the MIDI Out to my other MIDI device?

A: Yes, the Line 6 unit will send MIDI program change messages via it's MIDI out port when controlled by the floorboard.

Q: Where are the sounds stored on the FBV board?

A: The presets are always stored in the Line 6 unit, the FBV series only changes/controls the Line 6 device.

FBV and Shortboard F.A.Q.s

Q: What is the difference between the FBV and the FBX controllers?

A: These two pedals are identical. The pedal was originally released as the "FBX" controller, but the name was changed soon after the release to the "FBV" controller.

Q: Are there any control functions on the FBV controller that will not work with all Line 6 devices?

A: The FBV controller was designed for use with the Line 6 Vetta. While the majority of the buttons (i.e. A B C D) will work correctly, some buttons (i.e. amp 1/2, stomp 2/ 3, tremolo, favorite channel) may or may not have a function on your Line 6 Spider, Flextone, PODxt, POD X3, etc. See the documentation and FAQs for more specification application information.

Q: I cannot see the patch name when editing my XT unit from my FBV (shortboard) controller?

A: You will be able to see the patch name in the view window of the XT device, but you will not see the changes in the FBV controller window.

FBV Express F.A.Q.s

Q: Why doesn't the tuner feature work on my FBV Express?

A: The tuner feature on the FBV Express only works when used with amps or units that feature a built-in tuner. For example the Spider II HD75 has no built in tuner, therefore the tuner on the FBV Express is disabled.

Q: Can I access more than one bank of presets with my FBV EXPRESS?

A: No, the FBV Express will only access the A, B, C or D channels of whatever bank your unit is selected. For example, if your POD XT is sent to BANK 5, then you would be able to access and change between 5A, 5B, 5C, and 5D.

Calibration Procedures

Note: FBV Mk II controllers will need to have firware 1.10.0 or later installed for the calibration procedure, using Line 6 Monkey 1.31 or later. See the following link for more information on updating your firmware using Line 6 Monkey:

FBV Mk II (Express and Shortboard) software update

FBV Shortboard Mk. II:

1) Hold the D button while connecting the CAT-5 cable on the FBV. The display will read “CALIBRATE PEDAL” until the D button is released, at which point it will read “1 PEDAL TOE”.

2) Press and hold the internal pedal toe-switch until the LCD changes to “2 PEDAL MIN”. This should occur instantly.

3) Set the heel to (minimum) position, press the D button. The LCD will change to “3 LCD MAX”.

4) Set the toe position (maximum) and press the D button. The LCD will change to “CHECK VALUE 127”.

5) Move the pedal and verify that the value reaches 0 in the minimum position and 127 in the maximum position.

6) Press D to exit

FBV Express Mk. II:

1) Hold D while powering on the FBV. Upon release, the pedal display will read “1”.

2) Press and hold the pedal toeswitch until the 7 segment display changes to “2”. This should occur instantly.

3) Set the heel to the heel (minimum) position, press the D button. The 7 segment display will change to “3”.

4) Set the toe position (maximum) and press the D button. The tuner LEDs above the 7 segment display will light.

5) Move the pedal and verify that the tuner LEDs sequentially turn off as the pedal moves to the minimum position, and refills when moved to the maximum position.

6) Press D to exit

FBV Express (Mk I):

1) Unplug the RJ45 cable from your FBV EXPRESS

2) Move the expression pedal all the way to the toe down position

3) Hold down the A and D switches

4) Plug in your RJ45 with the switches still depressed and hold this for 10 seconds (you will see the LED go blank)

5) Move the expression pedal to the heel position and then all the way forward to the toe.

6) Shift all of your weight to the toe position (you will want to stand up) until the WAH light switches on.

7) Wait 10 seconds and click back to VOL. Your FBV EXPRESS is now calibrated.

FBV Shortboard Calibration (Mk I)

1. Attach the RJ45 cable from your Line6 device to your FBV pedal board. Once your Line 6 device is powered up, your FBV SHORTBOARD's LEDs should cycle and the display should read "LINE 6" with the backlight lit up.

2. Move the ONBOARD pedal to the center position, roughly halfway between the MAXIMUM and MINIMUM position.

3. Press STOMP + DELAY + REVERB and hold for three seconds to begin calibration of the ONBOARD pedal.

4. Move the ONBOARD pedal to its MAXIMUM position (pedal all the way toe down) and press down hard enough to actuate the pedal's toe switch.

5. Move the ONBOARD pedal to its MINIMUM position and press down (pedal all the way heel down).

***If you have an EXTERNAL pedal, hook it up to your FBV SHORTBOARD now and continue on to step six. If you do NOT have an external pedal, simply turn OFF you Line 6 device, you are done calibrating.

6. Move the EXTERNAL pedal to the center position, roughly halfway between the MAXIMUM and MINIMUM position.

7. Press BANK DOWN + STOMP + DELAY and hold for three seconds, to begin calibration of the EXTERNAL pedal.

8. Move the EXTERNAL pedal to its MAXIMUM position (pedal all the way toe down).

9. Move the EXTERNAL pedal to its MINIMUM position and press down (pedal all the way heel down).

10. Turn OFF your Line 6 device. You have just calibrated your EXTERNAL pedal.

FBV/FBX Pedal

1. Connect your FBX to your amp. The LEDs should cycle and the LCD should display "LINE 6" with the backlight lit.

2. Move both pedals to their center positions roughly halfway between the MAX and MIN position.

3. Press AMP1 + AMP2 + PITCHSHIFT/TREMOLO and hold for three seconds. This will reset the calibration values for the pedals to their default values.

4. Press AMP1 + AMP2 + DELAY and hold for three seconds. This will now display the pedal information for the LEFT pedal.

5. Move the LEFT pedal to its MAX position (pedal all the way toe down) and press down hard enough to actuate the pedal's toe switch. NOTE: You will only see 000 in the first column (AAA) until you click the toe switch down.

6. Move the LEFT pedal to its MIN position and press down (pedal all the way heel down).

7. Check the range on the MAX (number displayed on right hand side of the display) and MIN (number displayed second from right hand side of display) values to see that they are within spec (Pedal Testing section above).

8. Move the pedal to its MIN position. With the pedal just sitting there, check the number displayed in the second column (BBB). It should read 000. Press the pedal down at the heel position. This number should still read 000.

9. Press AMP1 + AMP2 + MODULATION and hold for three seconds. This will now display the pedal information for the RIGHT pedal.

10. Repeat steps 7 through 11 only for the RIGHT pedal.

FBV Series Trouble shooting procedures:

Calibrate the pedal (using the methods previously discussed).
Ensure that all washers/nuts/screws are seated correctly and tight.
Use a different CAT-5 cable to be sure the cable is functioning correctly.
Use a different Line 6 device to ensure the problem is not in the CAT-5 input of the Line 6 device.

If the unit is out of warranty: Open the bottom of the unit by removing the screws, and tighten the hex nut that holds the pedal to the chassis (the torque is 19 psi.)

Model Packs differences

Below is a brief summary of how model pack combinations added to the GuitarPort, TonePort or Silver bundle devices compare to those devices that include more models:

The Power Pack model pack upgrades the GuitarPort/TonePort/POD Studio model set to match the PODxt/PODxt Pro model set.

The Power Pack and the FX Junkie model packs upgrades the GuitarPort/TonePort/POD Studio model set to match the PODxt Live model set.

The Power Pack, FX Junkie, Collector Classic, and Metal Shop (also known as the Triple Pack) model packs upgrade the GuitarPort/TonePort/POD Studio to match the Vetta II model set.

The Power Pack, the Triple Pack and the Bass Expansion model packs upgrade the GuitarPort/TonePort/POD Studio to the the X3 and Gold Bundle model set.

The model sets used with the GuitarPort, TonePort/POD Studio and PODxt family devices are not VST plug-in ready when purchased. The online purchase and activation of the POD Farm Plug-in is needed to add this capability.

The GearBox Gold Plug-In Bundle contains the same models that are found in Line6's flagship product, the VETTA II, plus it adds the BASS Expansion model pack. In essence, the Gold Bundle includes every model that Line 6 offers.

Q: How do I activate my license?

-Copy the license key from your email inbox.

-Launch the Line 6 Monkey program (free download from www.Line6.com/software).

-In Line 6 Monkey go to the "Optional Add-Ons" tab and select "Activate Purchase."

-You will see a prompt screen where you can paste your license key.

-Now select the "Activate" button and Line 6 Monkey will proceed with the activation process.

Q: My licenses are showing installed in Line 6 Monkey, but the licenses are not available in my application?

A: In Line 6 Monkey, go to "optional add ons", then select "activate purchases". Type "refresh" in the license key window, then "activate".

Q: Can I put guitar model packs or the Gearbox or POD Farm plug-in onto a Bass PODxt?

A: No, the Bass PODxt series units cannot install model packs, POD Farm or Gearbox plug-in, or be used to subscribe to Guitarport Online (GPO).

Q: Can I purchase model packs and /or plug-ins without a credit card?

A: Our accounting system is only set up to accept transactions with a credit card. However; there are some alternatives that could allow you to use a credit card without actually getting one:

1. Get a prepaid mastercard. These are available at local shops in preset amounts that you just purchase with cash.

2. Use your PayPal account to set up a virtual credit card. Basically, PayPal creates an electronic credit card number for you, and then you add some money to it with your PayPal account. It's a secure way to shop online since you can preset the amount (just like a prepaid mastercard) and you can restrict its use to just one website (for example, Line6.com). Log in to paypal and search for "paypal plug-in".

Q: Can I transfer model packs that were installed on a unit before I owned it?

A: No, the model packs are still the property of the previous owner and are still able to be transferred or returned to the home account at their digression. The only way to control the model packs is to have the owner of the account "surrender" the account to the new user by giving them the account name and password.

Q: Can I transfer model packs from my account to a different account?

A: No. While Line 6 hardware can be registered/unregistered from an account, the software (i.e. plug-ins and model packs) cannot be transferred between accounts. The only way to allow a different person to control the model packs would be to "surrender" your account by giving the next owner your user name and password. However, if you have multiple units and/or model packs this is something you will need to consider before surrendering your account.

Q: Can I transfer model packs that are pre-installed on a unit to a different Line 6 device?

A: No, Model packs and assets that are pre-installed (i.e. the FX Junkie model pack on a POD XT Live) are "hard-wired" and cannot be transferred off the unit.

Q: I purchased multiple Model packs at the same time and now I would like to split the model packs between different devices. Is this possible?

A: Multiple model packs cannot be divided between different Line 6 units, as there is only one license key (whch cannot be "split apart") For example, if you purchase a "triple pack" license you cannot move only the FX Junkie model to another Line 6 device, as the other model packs (Metal Shop and Collector Classics) are also tied to that license and must be moved as well.

Transferring Model Packs From One Line 6 Device to Another

Transferring a License Key deactivates that License Key and all its associated Optional Add-Ons, so you can then activate the License Key and associated Add-Ons in a different, compatible Line 6 hardware device.

Go to http://line6.com/account/licenses/
Your License Keys are listed there. Find the License Key you want to transfer and click its [Transfer] button. Note: you can only transfer one license key at a time.
Connect via USB the Line 6 hardware the License Key was activated in. Run Line 6 Monkey.
Click the [Transfer] Button in Line 6 Monkey and follow its directions. This will deactivate the License Key from your hardware, so those Optional Add-Ons will no longer function.
Quit Line 6 Monkey and disconnect the device you have just deactivated. You can see at http://line6.com/account/licenses/ that the License Key now shows as uninstalled.
Ready to activate that License Key in another piece of compatible Line 6 hardware? Connect that hardware via USB and run Line 6 Monkey.
From http://line6.com/account/licenses/, copy the License Key you want to activate (the one you're transferring).
Click the [Activate Purchase...] button in Line 6 Monkey, paste in the License Key (or type it in exactly asshown on http://line6.com/account/licenses/ ) and click [OK]
Follow the directions from Line 6 Monkey, and start enjoying your Optional Add-Ons in their new home!

Using Your Model Packs with other Online and Offline Computers

Transferring Activations

So you just upgraded your computer to the latest and greatest (this week anyway…) model, and want to move GearBox and your Add-Ons to your new system? In this section, we’ll explain how to make the transfer process as easy as A-B-C, whether the new computer can connect to the internet or not.

1. The destination computer has an Internet connection

This is the easiest scenario: Download and install the GearBox application (always available at line6.com/software). This will also install the necessary drivers for your hardware and the Line 6 Monkey application. Your Add-Ons (Model Packs, Plug-ins, etc…) are tied-in to your hardware’s ESN, but also need to be authorized with each new computer you’ll be using GearBox on. In other words, they work but just haven’t been enabled on the new computer yet.

Launch Line 6 Monkey. The Monkey utility will connect to the server and scan your hardware for any activated Add-ons, and if it finds any, will display the following in red text.

Just click Authorize, and Monkey will enable the use of your activated Add-On(s) on the new computer system.

2. The destination computer lacks an Internet connection

So you just got the call from Mr. Big Time Producer for a session at so-and-so’s studio, and you want to bring all this great Line 6 tone along for tracking – but their computer does not connect to the internet. You can still move your GearBox activation to their recording environment by following these steps:

Prerequisite - This may seem obvious but we’ll mention it anyway: Your hardware and all GearBox software and Add-ons must already be activated and authorized on your own computer (meaning, an internet connection is required and has been used for the initial activation of your GearBox assets).

On your computer:

Locate and copy all .aet files to removable media (burn to a CD, copy to a Flash drive, etc…).

In Windows® XP, these files can be found in the C:\Document_and_Settings\(username)\Application Data\Line 6\GuitarPort folder: Please see the image below.

In Windows Vista, these files can be found in the C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Line6\Guitarport folder.

On MAC computers please go to HD > Users > 'your username' > Library > Application Support > Line 6 > GuitarPort.

Copy the GearBox installer to removable media, since the destination computer will not be able to download it.

On the destination computer:

-Install the GearBox software.

-Copy the .aet files from your removable media into the correct folder (described above).

***Please note: If there is no Guitarport folder in the location(s) specified above, you will need to manually create a Guitarport folder in that location and copy the .aet files into the newly created folder.

Q: What is Line 6 Monkey?

A: Line 6 Monkey is the intelligent updater for your Line 6 hardware and software products.

Q: How do I update Line 6 software with Line 6 Monkey?

1) Disconnect all non-essential USB, Firewire, and MIDI devices from your computer. Turn off any other programs that may be running and de-activate all anti-virus software installed on your computer. Do not use any USB hubs when using Line 6 gear at any time. See the following links for more information on connecting MIDI and USB devices to your computer:

2) Download the latest version of Line 6 Monkey for your operating system from the Line 6 software page. Go to the following link for software downloads:

3) You can leave the "product" set on "all", then select Monkey from the software dropdown menu.

4) Select your Operating system ("OS") from the next dropdown menu. For this installation we will select Windows XP.

5) Select "go"

6) The first program at the top of the page will be the latest version of Line 6 Monkey available for download. Select the "download now" icon to download the program to your computer. We recommend saving the installation file to your desktop so it is easy to find.

7) Once Monkey is downloaded you will need to install the program to your computer. double click the installation icon to see the following window, then select "Next":

8) Agree to the license by clicking on the "I agree" and select "next"

9) Select "Install"

10) Select "Next" when the installation is complete

11) Choose if you want the Monkey icon on your desktop and select "Next"

12) Select "Finish" to exit the installation process.

When the installation is complete you will run Line 6 Monkey. Choose the hardware device you wish to update. Once you have selected the unit you will be prompted in the updates tab to download the appropriate software and drivers for your unit. USB Device Driver Installation

When the drivers are installed you can connect your device via USB into the computer with an active internet connection. Monkey will tell you exactly what Line 6 software is installed in your computer and what firmware is installed in your Line 6 hardware product. If updates or optional software accessories are available online, the Monkey will let you know and give you the ability to perform an update or purchase the accessory from within this application. Be sure to keep all of your hardware and software updated at all times to avoid communication errors.

Q: How do I restore a tone bundle (all the presets) via Monkey?

1) Launch Line 6 Monkey and ensure that all the software is up to date. Then select "Backup and Restore." For this example we will use a PODxt device.

2) Under Restore, select "load bundle"

3) Select the bundle you want to load, then select "open".

4) Monkey will ask if you want to replace the presets in your unit. Select "yes".

5) wait for the patches to load, then select "OK" when the patches are loaded.

Q: I'm trying to update my Line 6 device with my MIDI interface but Line 6 Monkey doesn't recognize my gear?

A: When updating a Line 6 device via a MIDI interface, please ensure that you are using the latest drivers for the interface. These drivers can usually be downloaded from the web site of the interface's manufacturer. Line 6 advises you do this in order to ensure that the updates will go smoothly.

Q: Line 6 Monkey will not connect to the internet so that I can do my updates. Monkey says that there is no connection to the internet even though I am connected and able to access the internet normally?

A: There are a number of issues that can cause Line 6 Monkey to not be able to connect with the Line 6 servers. The biggest offenders are pop-up blockers and surfing anonymizers. Monkey uses specific information in the internet headers to verify the connection between our servers and your gear. The end result of using programs like "Ghost Surf" (a popular surfing anonymizer) is that they strip out this information. As a result, Line 6 Monkey and the Line 6 servers cannot agree that they have a valid connection available. If you are using the Ghost Surf program or a similar surfing anonymizer service, then you would need to temporarily disable this feature while you are using LINE 6 MONKEY. Most such programs have a way to specify a particular web domain as 'safe', and you may simply be able to tell the program that line6.com can be trusted. If not, however, you will have to consult the documentation for the software to determine how to disable it for use with Line 6 Monkey.

If you are using a product called GHOST SURF - make sure you don't have the "eye" visible in the task bar. Right click on the "eye" and select "exit" to turn Ghost Surf off.

If this doesn't help, it may be one of the background processes that Ghost Surf starts. Ghost Surf 2005 will start a process called Scheduler daemon.exe which can be stopped using the Windows Task Manager. You can open the Task Manager Window by hitting the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys at the same time. Just select the Scheduler daemon.exe process and click the "End Process" button. To restart the process, go to the Ghost Surf 2005 directory and double click on the Scheduler daemon icon which is a lightning bolt.

You'll also want to check and see if you (or your ISP) are running proxies that are not up to date. You can check this in the Tools/Internet Options menu of your browser.

Q: Line 6 Monkey freezes while detecting MIDI devices and I have to close it out from Task Manager. Is it broken?

A: There are some 'virtual' MIDI devices that don't react well to MIDI scans and can hang the system. Before running Line 6 Monkey, make sure that any drivers for non-physical MIDI devices (like virtual synths and the like) are disabled to avoid this problem.

Q: Why does Line 6 Monkey ask me to register my device even after I already have?

A: This is a known issue with Line 6 Monkey. The program is set to constantly remind you to register your gear. As a workaround, when Monkey asks you to register your device, please click on "Remind Me Later.

USB Device Driver Installation

In order for your computer to recognize your device when you are connected via USB, you will first need to install the appropriate drivers. Here is what you will need to do:

1) Download and launch the latest version of Line 6 Monkey, which is your intelligent updater program for Line 6 gear. See the following link for more information on Line 6 Monkey:

2) Turn off all other programs and disconnect all non-essential USB and Firewire devices(printers, cameras, mp3 players, etc.)from the computer (USB mouse and keyboard can be an exception if you do not have an alternative).

3) Launch Line 6 Monkey. If your unit is not connected (or there are no previous drivers installed), Monkey will ask you to choose the Line 6 device you wish to configure. For this tutorial we will select a Line 6 Guitarport from the dropdown menu.

4) Once the Guitarport is selected in the configuration window, select "OK".

5) In the Updates tab, highlight Drivers and select "Update Selection" on the right hand side of Line 6 Monkey's user interface.

6) Monkey will connect to our server and download the appropriate drivers for your Line 6 device.

6) After the drivers are downloaded, Line 6 Monkey will exit so the Driver Install Wizard can launch. Select "OK".

7) Once the Line 6 Monkey prompts you to plug your device in, the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard should open. Please follow the steps of the hardware wizard, and select "Next" to move to the next section.

8) If you are on a Windows machine you may be asked if you want to continue the install. Select "Continue Anyway" if you see this.

9) Wait for the wizzard to complete the installation

10) Once the hardware wizard has finished loading the drivers, your drivers should now be successfully installed. Select "finish"

11) Now when you run Line 6 Monkey, you will now see the drivers with a Green check mark next to them in the updates tab.

Line 6 Product Warranty

Your warranty is determined by the region that you purchase your unit. There are three distinct regions for Line 6 products:

1) United States (as Line 6 is the distributor)

2) Line 6 UK: United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Austria, and Andorra

3) Rest Of World: a series of Independent Distribution Companies. All administration of warranty is done in these three areas.

Why is this important to you? Your warranty is only valid in the region where you purchased your unit. If you buy your unit in Germany, then you must have the unit serviced in Germany, or within that region. If you live in South America, you will be interacting with the distributor for the country that you live in. It is for this reason that Line 6 recommends that you always buy your unit locally.

You will need to present your original, dated proof of purchase to have any warranty work performed at any Line 6 Authorized Service Center for repair.

Furthermore, as warranty is determined by the distributor (Line 6 US, Line 6 UK or the specific international distributor), your warranty may vary. In the direct US territories, a quick summary of warranty periods is included below.

Q: Are Line 6 warranties transferable?

A: Line 6 warranties transfer from one end user to another within the original warranty period (as long as the user has the original dated proof of purchase), but not when purchased second hand from a retail outlet.

Q: What Line 6 controller works with Line 6 Floorboard and/or the FB4?

A: The Line 6 products that are compatable with the Line 6 Floorboard/FB4 are:

* Axsys/AX2
* Flextone (I), II combos and heads
* POD (I) and II (marked as "pedal", not "FBV), POD Pro
* Bass POD and Bass POD Pro

* Spider (I)

Q: What type of cables are used with the Line 6 controllers?

Q: How long can the CAT-5/6 cable be before I have communication errors?

A: We've tested with cable lengths up to 50' with no problems.

Q: Can I use a "cross-over" CAT-5/6 cable with Line 6 gear?

A: You CANNOT use a "crossover" CAT-5 cable, as it may send voltage to unintended locations of your FBV Controller and damage the unit.

Q: I used a new data cable to connect my Floorboard/FB4 controller and I saw smoke?

Q: Can I use a CAT-5 data splitter from my Line 6 unit(s) to run multiple Floorboard/FB4 controllers on stage (or run multiple Line 6 units from a single controller)?

A: No, The FBV controller was designed to work on its own with a single amplifier. If you feel this is a feature you would want to implement.

Q: How do I activate the trem/chorus button on my Floor Board?

A: In order to activate the TREM/CHORUS effect while in the Floor Board's EFFECT ON/OFF mode, the chosen program (or Channel) will need to have the desired effect already programmed into it, but in the off the position. To do this, simply select the desired program, add and adjust the desired Tremolo, Chorus, Flanger or Rotary effect, engage the EFFECT ON/OFF mode on the Floor Board and then turn the effect off with the TREM/CHORUS button. Now, with the effect turned off, press SAVE twice. The program is now stored with the desired effect and effect settings, but in the off position. This effect can now be toggled on and off using the TREM/CHORUS button when the Floor Board is in EFFECT ON/OFF mode.

Q: Can I use the Line 6 Floor Board as a MIDI controller to control other MIDI effects units?

A: The Line 6 floorboard is not a dedicated MIDI controller for multiple units. Line 6 units that have midi outputs can send midi program change information. You can then simply connect the midi out jack from the Line 6 device to the midi in of the device that you wish to control. Be aware that there is no MIDI channel control and you may need to perform MIDI mapping within the second unit.

Q: I am not able to get a Wah or Volume Sweep on my Line 6 Floorboard?

1. Check the photoelectric strip running under the wah pedal to make sure it is not ripped or torn. If it ripped it will need to be replaced.If it is not seated correctly, you may be able to manually adjust it.

2. Replace the ethernet cable connecting your floorboard to your unit. It is a standard category five ethernet cable with two male rj45 connectors.

3. Re-seat the cable in the jacks of the floorboard and amp.

Q: I can not get my floor board to switch to the Presets, I try to hit the two switches simultaneously but it never goes to "P" only to "U"?

A: If you are using the Floor Board with a POD, Spider or Flextone II, this function is not available as all of the presets in these units are "U" (User Presets). This allows you to edit and store over all of them.

Q: The Volume and/or the Wah Pedal on my Floor Board squeaks when I move it. What can I do to fix this?

A: If the squeak you're hearing is more like a mechanical squeak, it could simply be a case of adjusting the screw and nut that mount the pedal to the Floor Board. Another simple solution may be to apply a small dab of 3-and-1 oil on the screw and nut that mount the pedal to the Floor Board.

Q: How do I calibrate my Line 6 Floorboard?

1) Remove the six bottom screws and four side screws

2) Locate the green PCB directly underneath the pedals (you will see the pedal controls with white plastic sticking out).

3) There will be two small set screws on the lower right of the pedal controls. Use these screws to adjust the pedal control by listening and adjusting to your preference. The amp and pedal will need to be powered up, so be careful when performing this adjustment.
