POD X3: Flash Memory 1.21 Release Notes

If you are a POD X3 owner, please download and install the latest version of Line 6 Monkey software and use it to update your POD X3 to this latest version of Flash Memory.

Enhancements/Fixes:

Momentary display of the amp tone knobs has been added to POD X3 and POD X3 Live.
POD X3 Live and POD X3 Pro now support MIDI via the external MIDI jacks. Please see the MIDI CC Reference doc (posted in the Manuals section of www.line6.com for more info).
Setting POD X3 Live or POD X3 Pro MIDI Channel to Omni now causes the unit to respond to MIDI CCs on any channel. If in Dual Tone mode, both tones are affected by the MIDI CCs. While MIDI channel is set to Omni, Tone 1 MIDI CCs are sent out Channel 1 and Tone 2 MIDI CCs are sent out channel 2.
Tone Toggle has been added via MIDI. Please see the MIDI CC Reference doc (posted in the Manuals section of www.line6.com for more info).
Ultra-Cool Line 6 Power-up splash screen has been added to POD X3 and POD X3 Live.
Minor change to our digital tube models to improve higher harmonics.
POD X3 Live FX Loop parameters are now tweakable via the onboard expression pedal.
POD X3 room reflections no longer sweep from left to right.
Assignable FBV Loop switch can now control Tone 2 for POD X3 and POD X3 Pro.
Buttons test in Test Mode restored

1. Input settings on User Bank 13 (A, B, C, D) are set incorrectly.

Tone 1 is set to GTR 1 + Variax and Tone 2 is set to Mic 1. Because the XLR and 1/4" inputs on the X3 Pro on the same channel cannot be used at the same time, this will not work.

The work around here is to re-save each patch in Bank 13 with the input setting on Tone 2 set to Mic 2.

Q: How many different ways can I connect my POD X3 Live in a live setting?

1. Mono or Stereo Recording or Direct to Mixer/PA

2. Feed One Guitar Amp

3. Feed Two Guitar Amps, One for Tone 1 and One for Tone 2

4. Feed a Guitar Amp and Send Separate XLR Direct Outs to Mixer/PA

Q: Can I use a phantom powered condenser mic with the POD X3 live?

The POD X3/X3 Live does not offer phantom power which is needed when using any condenser type microphones for recording or live use. See Referenced KB link for details.

Q: I just want the original factory sounds back into my POD X3 live, can I do this without having to connecting it to the computer and launching Line 6 Monkey?

Sure you can, you can do this directly from the X3 Live hardware interface

Q: What is Dual Tone?

DUAL TONE is the ability to split your single-input guitar or bass signal through two different amp and effect chains simultaneously to create gorgeous new hybrids, or use its dual inputs to individually process two instruments—a microphone and a guitar, for example—at the same time.

Q: And how do I make a dual tone patch?

Here is an example given in the pilots manual for exhibit 3: Feed Two Guitar Amps, One for Tone 1 and One for Tone 2.....(Manual 7•3)

1. Connect the left 1/4-inch output to one amp, and the right 1/4-inch output

to the other.

2. Set the first OUTPUTS page (1/4-inch Outputs):

• Mode: Combo Front, Combo Pwramp, Stack Front, or Stck PwrAmp.

• Lows, Focus, Highs: as desired

• Tone 1: On

• Tone 1 Pan: Full Left

• Tone 2: On

• Tone 2 Pan: Full Right

3. Check your Master Volume.

• Select the loudest preset/settings you intend to use.

• Play your instrument and turn Master Volume as high as you can without

clipping the amp/speakers you’re feeding.

Q: I made a dualtone patch with my MIC on tone 2, but it changes when I switch patches, how do I lock it?

From the main signal chain Page of your X3 live LCD screen, you can lock Tone 2 to prevent it from getting overwritten when loading new presets. This is handy when you’re using Tone 2 for vocals and you want to make sure it doesn’t change when you recall guitar presets on Tone 1.

POD X3 Series: Factory Reset, Reflash, and Firmware Updates

Q: Can I reset the POD X3 series units directly from the unit?

A: Yes. Hold the "home" button for two seconds, then highlight "reset user presets" navigating with the 4-way arrow key. Press save, then hold the save button for five seconds and release. Be aware that this will replace ALL user presets back to factory settings, so please back up your custom presets using Gearbox or Monkey if you want to save them for future use.

Q: How do I reflash my POD X3 unit?

1. Download and install the latest version of Line 6 Monkey from the following link:

2. Run the Line 6 Monkey program and log into Line 6 Monkey using your Line 6 user name and password. If this is the first time you have run Line 6 Monkey, you will not have driver software installed. Highlight the "Driver" item in the Updates window, and click the Update button on the right. Monkey will lead you through the installation process, which requires you to quit Monkey and possibly restart your machine. See the following link for more information on driver installation:

3: Make sure your POD X3 unit is powered on and connected to your computer via a USB 2.0 connection. Monkey should automatically recognize your POD X3 and complete the startup sequence. See the following link for USB troubleshooting tips if Line 6 Monkey does not recognize your POD X3 unit.

4. On the Updates tab, look to see if your Flash Memory is up to date. If it is out of date, you will see a yellow "yield" sign next to flash memory.

If you need to update (or just want to reset the unit back to factory state for troubleshooting) select "Flash Memory" (it will highlight in blue) and click the "Update Selection/Reinstall Latest" button to the right. Monkey will lead you through the process.

Monkey will give you an option to continue:

Monkey will then ask if you want to keep your presets. If you do not want to keep the presets (or have already backed up your presets), select "no".

Monkey will now update your unit after you select "yes". Be sure to close all other applications and heed the warnings.

You will see the progress bar writing the flash to your unit

Restart your POD X3 unit by powering the unit off, then back on.

When the update is complete you will receive this message.

Q: How do I update the firmware on my POD X3 series unit?

A:On the Updates tab, look to see if your USB Firmware is up to date. If you need to update, highlight "Device Firmware" and click the "Update" button to the right. Monkey will lead you through the firmware update process as shown above.

Q: How do I reflash in "safe mode"?

A: Safe mode can be used when a unit cannot be reflashed using the normal reflash procedure. Hold the four-way arrow key to the right while powering the POD X3 unit on to start your unit in safe mode. You can then reflash the unit as decribed above.

A: X3 Pro Dimensions:

Q: The Specifications on the web states that the X3Pro requires USB 2.0 but the actual USB input on the back panel is not labeled. Does it required USB 2.0?

Q: How do I restore the X3 Pro to it’s the Factory Presets?

Q: Will the included Gearbox Plugin require us to use the X3Pro as a dongle?

A: The Gearbox Plugin works with the POD X3 Pro just like it does with other compatible products. The answer is yes.

A: No

Q:What are the MIDI implications of the X3 Pro?

A: The MIDI Implications are the same as the POD X3 and the POD X3 Live.

The X3 series include a USB connection, and these units will both expose a set of USB MIDI In/Out ports on your Windows or Mac computer. However, these devices utilize different types of commands and, therefore, will not respond to MIDI control data. As with POD X3 Live, the Pro includes 5-pin MIDI In/Out jacks that can be used strictly for receiving MIDI Program Change messages (For scrolling through User Presets) and for sending MIDI CC data when using the onboard pedal for Volume, Wah, and Tweak parameters.

Q:What is the software compatibility of the X3 Pro?

A: The POD X3 Pro is currently compatible with Line 6 Monkey, Gearbox, Guitarport Online, Workbench (w/ a Variax Guitar), and as a dongle for the POD Farm Plug-in (within your DAW only).

Q: How can I tell which version of Flash Memory & USB firmware is installed in my X3Pro?

A: Press and hold “OUTPUTS” for system settings. Use the directional keys to scroll to the last page: The versions are displayed under ‘CNTRST’ Shown as:

POD X3: Tweak parameters don't reflect physical pedal position upon patch recall

On POD X3L, physical expression pedal positions, when assigned to a TWEAK parameter, will not be stored upon saving the patch.

However, the position or value of the effect parameters in Edit Mode (UI) that the TWEAK Pedal is assigned to, will be stored upon save.

This means that when you recall a patch with your expression pedal in the heel position, assuming the expression pedal is set to control a tweak parameter (IE: delay mix), the patch will recall the value you saved the tweak at (IE:Delay Mix 80%) and not the PHYSICAL PEDAL POSITION of the expression pedal (IE: Heel position or NO DELAY MIX)

This behavior is similar to the way the POD XTL and Vetta works and there has been some debate among our end users as to whether this should be the correct functionality.

Q: Does the FBV2 work with the X3 bean/Pro?

A: Technically, no. The FBV2 is not intended for use with the X3 Bean/Pro and is listed as "non-compatible" in the FBV comparision chart. The FBV2 only switches back and forth between 2 presets, it will not keep going forward or backward within the bank.

Q: Can I transfer Bass PODxt tones to my X3 unit?

A: No, the Bass PODxt tones will not load into the X3, producing an "invalid tone" message.

Q: Why do I see an asterisk on my POD X3/Live when I power on my X3 or X3 Live?*

A: The X3 Beans and X3 Lives have a 7 second buffer time, which means it needs 7 seconds to completely process any changes you make. At this time please press save twice so that the asterisk* disappears. Wait 7 seconds, and power off then back on again.

     4. Set the pedal to the heel position.
     5. Press the A footswitch to get data on pwm duty cycles.
     6. Set the pedal to the toe position.
     7. Press the B footswitch to get data on pwm duty cycles.
     8. Press the C footswitch for automatic selection of the best duty cycle.
     9. Move the pedal to get smooth 0-255 Scaled Values.
   10. Press the D footswitch to save the settings.

POD X3 Series: Loading tones with Line 6 Monkey using the Backup and Restore Function

Scenario A:

You found an XT compatible tone on customtone.com that you want to try out on your X3 Live

Scenario B:

You have an XT patch you'd like to use as a tweak base for your X3 Live

Let's use Line 6 Monkey to import this patch into a specific bank.

Under the Backup & Restore Tab, click on ADVANCED:

POD X3 Bean/Live/Pro: Patch Saving Step by Step

So you got the perfect sound... Now you want to save your own patch...

Press 'SAVE' to bring you to the "SAVE TO:' screen.

The bottom 4 knobs are critical to this process as they change the values that are directly positioned above. The first knob alternates between saving in Tone 1 and Tone 2, the third knob moves the cursor left and right, and the fourth knob changes the character that the cursor is positioned under.

Use these knobs to select whether you want to save the patch to Tone 1 or Tone 2 and to change the name of the patch itself.

Once you have set the name and tone position, use the save knob to choose which bank you want to save this to, then press the save knob again to save it.
