A: There are four amp models on the Spider IV 15: Clean, Crunch, Metal, and Insane. The tone settings list numerous songs can be used to dial sounds in as well. If you would like to return your unit to the original presets, please perform a factory reset (see below).

Q: How do I perform a factory reset on my Spider IV 15?

A: The factory reset procedure for a Spider IV 15 is to hold down the clean button as you turn on the power and hold the button for 5-8 seconds.

Q: Is there a 'Boost' & 'Gate' function?

A: Yes. Toggle the boost by holding the 'Tap' button while turning the 'Drive' knob past 12 o'clock. The gate can be toggled similarly, but using the 'Echo/Reverb' knob. See the manual for more information.

Q: How is the Spider IV 15 different than the Spider III 15?

A: The Spider IV 15 amp models have been revoiced, the back is now a "3/4" style,and there is now an FBV controller jack for the FBV2 or FBX Express pedal.

Q: How do I use the tuner on the Spider IV 15?
A: Press the Tuner button, and notice the volume is muted during tuning. The amp model LEDs will indicate when the string you are playing is in tune. The “Crunch” and “Metal” LEDs will both light up when the string is in tune. If the Clean or Crunch LED are lit, the string is flat. If Metal or Insane LEDs are lit, the string is sharp. Once all your strings are in tune, press any button to exit Tuner Mode. See the manual for more information.

Updating the Spider IV (75, 120, 150, 150HD) using the FBV Mk II and Line 6 Monkey

This document explains how to update the Spider IV (75, 120, 150, 150HD) using the FBV Mk II and Line 6 Monkey using Windows XP, Vista, OSX 10.4.11, or 10.5.8. Before you get started, you will need to have your Spider IV connected to the FBV Mk II (Express or Shortboard) using a CAT-5 cable, and you will need to have your FBV Mk II unit connected to an open USB port on the back of your computer (do not use a USB hub). Be sure that your computer is connected to the internet.

1) Run Line 6 Monkey and you will be asked which unit you want to work with. Highlight the Spider IV unit and select “OK”.

2) If Monkey asks you to register your gear, you can select “remind me later”.

3) Highlight “flash memory”, then select “update selection”.

4) If Monkey asks you to register your gear, you can select “remind me later”.

5) Select “Yes” to continue.

6) Select "I Accept" for the software agreement and select “continue”.

7) Select “Yes” to update the Flash memory.

8) Allow the unit to go through the update process. This can take up to 5 minutes.

9) Select “OK” when the update is finished.

10) You will see a green check mark in from of flash memory to show it is now up to date.

Q: What are the presets on my Spider IV amplifier?

A: The user presets and artist/song presets for the Spider IV can be downloaded from the Line 6 “manuals” section. There are the 64 user-programmable presets, over 350 Artist Presets, and over 200 song and effect-based presets. Be aware that the artist, song, and effect based presets cannot be saved in their current location, but you can modify and/or store these setting in one of the 64 user-programmable presets. See the PDF documents at the botton of this FAQ for the complete list of presets. If you would like to return your unit to the original presets, please perform a factory reset.

Q: How are the preset banks categorized?

A: The User, Artist, and Song Banks can be navigated by using the left/right buttons on the four-way selector. You can navigate through the banks once you are in the specific area using the up/down buttons on the four-way selector, then once you are in the specific bank you can access the individual presets by turning the presets encoder key.

Q: What are the amp models on the Spider IV 75/120/150/150HD?*

Clean Red - Based on the clean channel of the Marshall® JCM 900, the first true modern high gain amp from Marshall. Select Clean Red to get crisp, amazing clean tones, great warm jazz tones, and all the high-end shimmer you’ll need with a generous amount of bottom end.

Clean Green - We developed this amp model to emulate those late 60s and early 70s clean tones. We modeled a 1973 Hiwatt® custom 100, then extended the tone control range and tightened up the low end for that big, ringing sound.

Twang Red - This amp model draws on our analysis of mid 60s Fender® amps, in particular the blackface ’65 Twin Reverb®. We wanted that classic, glassy high end tone, with enough snap and bite for some serious chick’n pick’n. Things don’t get too crunchy until you reach the top range of the Drive knob.

Twang Green - There’s nothing like the sound of the classic Fender® blackface Deluxe Reverb®, the Holy Grail for many blues, country and roots rockers.

Class A Red - Ready, steady....GO! This amp model is based on a Vox® AC-30 amplifier with an updated and expanded TBX tone control circuit. We wanted to capture that early pop rock tone that many British invasion bands are so well known for.

Class A Green - There are some great modern amps out today based on the legendary tones of yesteryear. Here’s our take on the EL84 circuit of a Divided By 13 9/15 Model.

Blues Red - This amp model is inspired by that famous vintage tweed sound we all know and love. We evaluated a ’53 Fender® wide panel Deluxe and this is what we came up with.

Blues Green - Blues Green is based on a Gretsch® 6156, a 1960 1x10 combo from the days when rock’n’roll took the blues to a new level. Add some reverb and a slap echo and be-bop-alu-la!

Crunch Red - This sound was crafted during our studies of the ‘68 Marshall® Plexi 50 Watt, which was used by a number of early metal bands. Hi Gain Red provides a wider range of tone control settings than the original jumpered Marshall®, allowing you to bump up the mids even at the highest Drive settings.

Crunch Green - Here’s our inspired interpretation on a 2005 Orange® AD-30TC, a 30 watt, Class A head that oozes pure Brit rock tone, taking 60s crunch to a new level.

Hi Gain Red - Plexi On Fire! This amp model is based on a ‘68 Marshall® Plexi 100 watt with a few added extras; the combination of a Variac and the jumpered input channels creates that infamous brown sound that will feel like flames are shooting out the input jack!

Hi Gain Green - Hi Gain Green was inspired by the Diezel® Herbert, the 180 watt Ducati of high performance guitar amplifiers, featuring a huge, tight low end.

Metal Red - For this amp model we took the classic Mesa/Boogie® Dual Rectifier® and added a few enhancements. The resulting Amp Model has a definite modern flavor. This monster truck of tone delivers a bottom end that’s big, powerful, tight and fast. Use Metal Red to get a punchy, high gain Metal sound.

Metal Green - This sound was created to be an aggressive high gain Amp Model with a unique Mid control that will sweep though an entire spectrum of tone on one knob. With the Mid knob is set to minimum, the distortion exhibits Fuzz pedal characteristics. When set to noon, it mimics the creamy modern high gain amp tones. And when turned up to max, it’s reminiscent of that maxed out Class A sound. Of course there are all the places in-between...

Insane Red - This model is our “dialed in for shredding” version of the Mesa/Boogie® Dual Rectifier® red channel. It combines the intensity and impact of Metal Red, but delivers more midrange and teeth for that bone-crushing, brain piercing insane grind.

Insane Green - Our goal with Insane was to provide you with as much input gain distortion as possible short of complete meltdown. You get an obscene helping of distortion, while still retaining tonal definition and character. As a result, you get way more bottom end and cabinet character than other small amps. Crank up the Drive control and prepare to dominate!

Q: What is “Manual Mode”?

A: When the Manual button is lit, Spider IV is operating in “Manual Mode”, meaning that all of the controls are active and the sound of the amp is determined by the current knob settings. If you are not in Manual Mode and would like to be, simply press the “manual” button. You can exit manual mode by selecting the “manual” button again, or pressing the buttons for A-D.

Q: What are the specifics of the Smart Harmony effect on the Spider IV (75-150) Series?

A: The Smart Harmony can be placed “pre” or “post” amp, and can perform diatonic harmony for any root note (A through G#) from a unison (no change) to a ninth interval (up to seven steps) above or below the root note. The scales included in the Smart Harmony include Major, Natural Minor, Pentatonic Major, Pentatonic Minor, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, Whole tone, and Diminished scale. The overall mix of the Smart Harmony effect can be programmed and stored per patch from 0-100%.

Q: What are the specifics of the Pitch Glide effect on the Spider IV (75-150) Series?

A: The Pitch Glide can be placed “pre” or “post” amp, and the Heel and Toe positions of the FBV can be programmed two octaves above or below the incoming note in ½ steps (semi-tones) increments. Be aware that the number “7” in this situation equals 3.5 steps (because of the half step measurements) rather than an interval of a seventh (5.5 steps) that would be heard when using the Smart Harmony effect. The overall mix of the Pitch Glide effect can be programmed and stored per patch from 0-100%.

Q: I already have an original FBV controller, will this work on the Spider IV 75-150 series?

A: The FBV (Mk I) controllers will control most of the standard functions on the Spider IV 75-150 series with a few limitations. Here is a breakdown of the limitations:

FBV Express
1) The FBV Express (Mk I) cannot punch in and out overdubs. It just starts record once for a single pass. The FBV Express Mk II can control the overdub feature.

2) The FBV Express (Mk I) cannot arm the Quick Loop. The quick loop must be armed by pressing the amp front panel. The FBV Express MkII can arm the Quick Loop by pressing down either the A+B or C+D footswitches. This is what takes you out of Looper mode as well.

FBV Shortboard
1) The FBV Shortboard (Mk I) cannot arm the Quick Loop. The quick loop must be armed by pressing the Quick Loop button on the front panel. The FBV Shortboard MkII can arm the Quick Loop by pressing the (new) Function 2 button. Overdubbing works on both original and current Shortboards.

All other functions are available on the FBV Mk I pedals as their Mk II counterparts. Due to the new effects layout, the FBV Shortboard FX Loop button will activate the Boost setting in the Spider IV 75-150. On the FBV Shortboard Mk II this button is labeled “Function 1”.

Q: What are the specifics on the Looper function of the Spider IV (75-150) Series?

A: The Spider IV 150 and HD is designed to see a load on *both * speaker outputs by connecting the left and the right inputs to the Spider cabinet with speaker cables. Q: Can I use two Spider cabinets with the Spider Series HD 150?

A:The Spider IV 150 and HD were designed to power a single Spider Stereo Cabinet with a stereo 8 ohm load. Using two Spider cabinets would require a modification to each cab so that they are each rewired to produce a 8 ohm mono load. This modification would preferably be done by an authorized Line 6 service center, which can be located from the Service Center link on the Support page.

Q: How do I connect external speakers to my Spider IV 150 amplifier?

A: Line 6 recommends disconnecting the internal speakers (covering the dry-solder clips with electrical tape) and connecting both external speaker outputs to an 8 ohm (or higher) load. Do not connect just one side, as this may cause a power amp failure. Powering the internal speakers along with a external speakers may cause a power amp failure and is not supported.

If this happens, simply remove the FBV shortboard.

A: No, but that usually doesn't stop people from shredding.

Q: How do I access the tuner?

Q: How do I save the Artist/Song presets from the Spider III/IV into the user banks so I can access those presets from my FBV controller?

A: Hold the desired Channel button (A B C D) for two seconds, then use the four-way arrow selector to choose the bank (number) location you want to save the preset to. Select the channel button again, and you will see a rapid flash on the channel light to show the preset has been saved.

Q: How do I operate the "boost" on the Spider series amplifier?

Spider I, II, and III: The Spider Distortion Boost is activated by holding down the “tap tempo” button while rotating the “drive” control above the 12 o'clock position. The B light will illuminate to indicate that the boost is active.

Spider IV: The boost feature can be edited by pressing the presets encoder, then using the right/left function on the four-way arrow selector to select “boost”. You can then activate the feature, increase or decrease the amount of boost (up to 8 db), and select “pre” and/or “post”. This can be activated from the FBV Shortboard MK II by the “fucntion 1” button, and the Effect Loop button the FBV Shortboard (Mk I).

Q: How do I operate the Noise Gate on the Spider series amplifier?

Spider III: Press and hold Tap as you turn the Reverb knob up past twelve o’clock, and you turn on a built-in Noise Gate, which helps to cut down on hiss and noise. When you do this, the Channel D LED comes on to indicate that the Gate is on.

Spider IV: The Noise Gate feature can be edited by pressing the “presets” encoder, then using the right/left function on the four-way arrow selector to select “gate”. Spider I, II, and III: we decided to remove some of the editing capabilities and make it as simple as possible. In addition, we wanted to make it as affordable as possible, and removing some of the edit features was one of the ways that we were able to keep the cost lower. This being the case, you cannot change the delay feedback rate on the Spider.

Spider IV: The delay repeats (feedback) can be edited by pressing the presets encoder, turning to “FX3”, the using the up/down arrows to “FdBk”. You can then increase or decrease the amount of feedback by turning the preset encoder, as well as the delay time and mix.

Q: Every time I switch to a certain amp model the delay comes on - how can I stop this?

Spider I, II, and III: When you select an Amp Model, the Spider automatically sets its tone controls and effects to match that Amp Model. You can disable the auto-FX selection (but not tone control auto-selection), by powering up Spider with the Channel D/Insane button held. Be aware that the auto-selection is re-enabled next time you power up. If you absolutely never want to hear a particular effect (such as delay), you can turn the SmartFX knob to 'Off', then press and hold a channel button until it blinks, and you've saved a new version of the sound, without any effects.

Spider IV: The Auto effect feature can be enabled by pressing the presets encoder, then using the right/left function on the four-way arrow selector to select “autoFX”. You can then activate the feature, as well as turn the tap light on/off and set the timer for the display backlight.

Q: Why does the tap tempo light always blink? Can I turn the tap tempo light off?

Spider I, II, and III 75-150: The tap tempo light shows the tempo of the delay, even if the delay is not active. There is no way to disable the tap tempo light on the Spider I, II, or III Series amplifiers.

Spider IV 75-150: The tap tempo light is assignable to the modulation and delay effects, and shows the tempo of the assigned effect. The tap feature can be enabled by pressing the presets encoder, then using the right/left function on the four-way arrow selector to select your effect, then using the up/down arrow to locate “tap”. The tap feature can be enabled or disabled by turning the “presets” encoder, then using the right/left function on the four-way arrow selector to select”setup”. You can then use the up/down arrows to locate “Taplite”, and de-activate the tap light feature by turning the preset encoder.

Q: How can I record direct the Spider series amp signal directly into a computer?

A: You can use the headphone jack as a direct line out to record your Spider series amplifier into any line input on your computer's sound card or audio interface. For sound card connection, you will need a cable with one male stereo 1/4" jack on one end-to plug into the headphone jack of the Spider, and a male 1/8" stereo mini jack-like (the kind on Ipod type headphones) to plug into the sound card. This will work for most computer sound cards, as they often have 1/8" stereo mini inputs and outputs. If you have an audio interface or a professional sound card that have multiple 1/4" inputs, you will need a cable with one male 1/4" TRS (stereo) jack on one end, and two male 1/4" mono jacks on the other end (commonly known as an “insert cable”) to create a stereo image.

Take care in setting the output level on your amp: adjust the master volume to get the cleanest and most noise-free sound when the volume control on the toolbar of your computer is on full, with the volume control on your computer speakers set to normal, reasonable listening levels. If you set the output level on your amp too high, the sound will be undesirably distorted. Set it too low and the sound will be noisy. All you need then is some sort of recording software, of which there are many options available.

Q: Is there a way to use the POD-Style Out (headphone) jack without disabling the speakers?

A: There is no supported way to run both the speakers and the headphone jack at the same time.

Q: Can I use an external effects pedal or processor with a Spider series amplifier?

A: Effects pedals will almost always work well in front of the Spider series amplifiers. Just be certain that the output level of the external effect is not set too high as it could overload the input of the Spider. Most rack-mount processors are designed for line level use and often don't sound quite right when connected to the front of an amplifier.

Q: Can I use a MIDI controller with a Spider amp?

A: The left or right input (single cable) connection is 4 ohms, with all four (4) speakers active. When both cables are used there will be an 8 ohm load on each side, using two (2) speakers for each side.

- The HD75 is a mono head, which will have the same 75 watt/4 ohm total output when using one or two speaker cables between the head and cabinet.

Spider II/III/IV HD 150:

- The stereo outputs of the Spider 150 HD Series are rated at 8 ohms per side. You will need to connect both outputs of the head to both the Spider cabinet inputs. Be sure to use two (2) speaker cables to connect your head to your cabinet to ensure you have the correct ohm load. Be aware that the Spider cabinet jacks will produce a 4 ohm load (either left or right jacks) when a single cable is connected, which will damage the Spider 150 HD.

Q: Can I use other cabinets besides the Spider cabinet?

A: Yes, the Spider HD and 150 (combo) series will work with any standard stereo 4x12 cabinet with two 8 ohm loads. Be aware that many guitar speaker cabinets will not have the flat response speakers found in Spider Cabinets, so the tone may be different than originally intended. A 16 ohm stereo cabinet will sound about 3dB quieter than an 8 ohm cab, but would not damage the Spider HD. A 4 ohm load on the other hand, will damage the Spider HD 150.

A: The tuner is not included on the Spider 15 watt, 30-watt combo, or 75-watt head.

Spider II:

Spider I: The tuner is only accessible by connecting the Line 6 Floorboard controller.

Q: When I am finished using the floorboard tuner and switch the tuner off, there is a load 'pop' that is heard through the amp?

A: This is not a problem with the floorboard. The Spider does this when you exit the tuner mode. The noise can't be eliminated entirely but there are a couple things you can try to do to minimize the noise.

1) When tuning, turn the volume pedal down all the way. After you exit tuner mode, wait a few seconds and then bring the volume pedal back up.

2) fter tuning, let a few seconds of total silence (from your guitar) pass before exiting tuner mode.

A: You will need to disconnect the internal speakers (covering the dry-solder clips with electrical tape) and connect both external speaker outputs to an 8 ohm (or higher) load.
