Vettta Trouble Shooting F.A.Q.s

Q: I have a blank screen on my Vetta?

A: If you can't see any characters on your Vetta when you are going through the update, please angle your Vetta or look very closely at the screen at an angle. You should see a faint readout on the screen. If you cannot see anything at all (and adjusting the contrast does not help), you will need to reinstall the firmware. See the Vetta Software Update/Reflash Procedure for the correct method for reflashing your Vetta. Line 6 recommends (but does not support) the M-AUDIO MIDISport Uno from, as some MIDI to USB devices use an old technology known as "active sensing" or they cannot handle the large file transfer. Please ensure that you install the correct drivers directly from the M-Audio website.

Q: I have slow patch changes on my Vetta?

A: If program changes seem slow when switching from preset to preset after you've upgraded the Vetta's software, you will want to reset the program memory. Here's how:

Press SAVE and scroll to page 11 "RESET FACTORY". While on this page, press SAVE to reset the Factory Bank. The right LCD will read "restoring FACTORY bank".

When this process is complete, scroll to page 12 "RESET USER" and press SAVE once again. The right LCD will now read "restoring USER bank". Press TAP when the process is complete. Program change should now be back to normal. If this does not fix the problem, you want to reinstall the FLASH MEMORY on your VETTA II. This time when you are asked if you want to keep your existing patches, click NO.

Q: I get no sound when I plug my Variax into my Vetta's VDI?

A: Ensure that the Variax is outputing signal and that your Vetta is receiving the informing by check the step in the Vetta manual (see 47 and 440 for more information). Also, press the "Output Setup" button then rotate the page knob to page 4/4. Look for "Format" section and turn the format knob (first from the left) to 44.1/16.

Q: I am receiving an "access error" on my Vetta?

A: This is an internal hardware error that needs to be serviced at an authorized Line 6 service center.

Q: I am receiving eight "black boxes" in the display on my Vetta?

A: This is an internal hardware error that needs to be serviced at an authorized Line 6 service center.

Q: How do I find a Line 6 service Center?
Product Repair

Vetta Application F.A.Q.'s

Q: How do I go about bypassing the amps and cabs in my Vetta?

A: The amp models can be bypassed on any preset channel, simply turn the amp model knob to the left to amp model "1" this is amp model bypass, then "Save". With the amp model in bypass the cabinet model will follow, "No Amp, No Cab".

Q: How can I set the volume pedal on the FBV or FBV Shortboard to be "always on"?

A: All you have to do is "Save" it in the on position into each preset. Simply go into each preset, activate the volume pedal and press SAVE.

Q: Can I load Vetta II presets into my original Vetta?

A: No, Vetta II presets loaded into your non-updated Vetta can cause your amp to freeze up if they contain amps, effects, or other features that are not in the original Vetta. If this happens, simply turning the amp off and back on again should bring things back to normal, but you probably want to avoid that, especially at a gig or session.

Q: Are the post effects in the Vetta routed after the cabinet modeling?

A: Yes, the Post Effects come after the Cabinet Models.

Q: Does the Vetta have an Acoustic Simulator?

A: The Vetta does not include an acoustic simulator but it does feature two amp models that were designed to be used with acoustic guitars with piezo pickups and electric guitars that feature one of those fancy, newfangled bridges with the 'acoustic' pickup built in.

Q: If I have a Variax plugged into a PODxt Live or Vetta, can I run Workbench and Line 6 Edit at the same time?

A: No. Due to the MIDI connection between the Vetta II and the computer, there are some messages sent when running both programs that do not allow them to be run at the same time.

Q: Is the Vetta Midi controllable?

A: Yes. please consult the manual for the midi implementation list.

Line 6 Manuals

Q: Why doesn't Vetta do delay spillover?

A: For delay and reverb trails to work correctly, you would need an entire second processing engine (or most of one), and a separate signal (or data) path. Let's take an simplified example from a PODxt: You've got a screamer and tube delay pre with 2 repeats, a Blackface Lux model, a Rotary Horn and a light plate reverb post. You switch to a different patch that has the delay switch to a digital in post with 6 repeats, shuts off the mod, but changes it to a U-Vibe and moves it pre, changes the reverb to a heavy Medium Hall, and switches the amp model to Insane. If you just take the delay buffer and dump it out, you get the sound of a tubescreamer (since what's in the buffer actually gets processed by the tube and wow and flutter models as it leaves the buffer) with none of the delay tonality, amp tone, no modulation, no reverb. Or, you run it through the new models and get something completely jarring. To make it sound reasonably natural, you need to process the buffer through the tube delay model, through the Blackface Lux model, through the Rotary Speaker, and through the plate reverb model. In other words, just about the exact same amount of processing that it takes to do a whole sound anyway. So, you have to have a second processor, just as powerful as the main one, that is only used to do this when switching patches (because if you use it to do anything else, you might not have enough horsepower available to do all the processing required. In other words, a second XT, lying fallow, except for those few seconds a night that you might need it). It's like buying a second car that you constantly have on a tow bar behind your regular car, just in case you run out of gas. Not very practical.

Vetta Setup and Connection F.A.Q.

Q: Can I go direct from the Vetta to a recording console or PA system?

A: Yes,the Vetta II can be used with or without speakers in a studio or live performance application directly through the board. Page 4.32 of the Vetta II Pilot's Handbook it describes how to turn the outside speaker cabs off in order to use the head to run direct. The second page that comes up from the Output Setups button lets you turn both the internal and any external speaker cabs off. When you have turned the speakers off, the Master Volume Control sets the level for the direct outs.

Q: How do I hook up an external effects processor to my Vetta?

A: While we've tried to anticipate all of your effects needs, you may still want to use other effects with Vetta. That's okay, we won't be upset. Obviously, if you've got actual physical world stompboxes you want to use, run them in front of Vetta as you would do with any other amp. If you've got rack mount effects or other devices that work at line level, these can be hooked up in Vetta's effects loop. This loop is switchable (from the front panel or from the FBX foot controller), the on/off state is remembered with each channel that you save, and you can even route the loop either series or parallel. To hook something up to Vetta's loop, you'll need a pair of what are commonly referred to as 'Y' or 'insert' cables. These cables have a 1/4-inch TRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve) plug on one end, and that splits out to a pair of 1/4-inch TS (Tip, Sleeve) plugs at the other end. You'll need one of these for Vetta's loop send, and one for the return. You hook them up like this:

It's worth pointing out here that we haven't hooked these cables up the way you might use them for an effect 'insert.' An effect insert uses these cables to allow input and output signals to both be connected at the one jack. If Vetta had an effect insert (like many mixing boards do), you'd jack the TRS end of a single one of these cables in this insert, then one of the split ends of the cable would go to the effect's input and the other would go to the effect's output. But as the picture shows, we're not doing that. Once you've got your external effects hooked up, press the LOOP button as needed to get the loop turned on.

The next step is to set up the send and return levels for the loop. Press the Edit button. If the Loop page isn't showing already, press the Loop Button and it will be. You'll see something along these lines: The left most knobs, labeled Amp1/L Send and Amp 2/R Send control your signals differently depending on how your loop is routed. You'll want to check out Effect Routing on page 4.17 of your manual in order to get your loop properly set for the particular sonic madness you have in mind. When the loop is first in the chain of post effects or in any parallel routing, the loop sends are getting signals from the discrete outputs of Amp 1 and Amp 2, regardless of how the amps are panned. When it's not first in the post effects signal path, routed in series or chain, the sends are from the left/right outputs of the previous effect. When the loop is routed parallel or chain, set the mix control on the effect in the loop to 100% wet. Use the Return Mix knob on the display shown above to determine how much of the effect you want to hear. If you instead try to run your external effect at something other than 100%, you'll get a bad sonic experience known as 'comb filtering' to audio engineers if the external effect unit is digital, and you'll get your stereo signals collapsing to mono if your external effect unit sums its left/right inputs to mono (as

many effects processors do). When the loop is routed series, use the mix control on the effect in the loop to set the mix. No worries about comb filtering here, but if your effect unit sums its left/right inputs to mono (often, the 'direct' signal is summed, even when the 'effect' part of the signal is stereo) then the fancy panning you set up on Vetta may be lost when you hit a chord.

Q: How can I get my Heilsound Talkbox plugged with a Vetta Combo?

A: In order to use Heil Talkbox with the Vetta, connect a speaker cable from the Vetta's Left Speaker Outputs to the input on the Talkbox. Next, you'll need to customize the speaker leads connected to Vetta's left speaker. Basically, you'll need a cable that has a 1/4" speaker jack on one end (tip +, sleeve -) and two, crimp terminal clips on the other. Connect the 1/4" speaker jack to the Talkbox output and the two, crimp terminals to Vetta's left speaker. Make sure you keep track of which clip is positive and which clip is negative and make sure they are connected to the speaker correctly. If the sound coming from the speaker seems to be strange, you may need to reverse the clips. Connect the Talkbox tube and your microphone to your P.A. (or second amp) as instructed in the Talkbox manual. When connected in this manner you will hear the Talkbox coming out of the P.A. speakers (or second amp) and the amp's normal tone coming from Vetta's right speaker. If you want to mute the amp's normal tone and just hear the Talkbox, you will need to pan the Vetta's amp models all the way to the left, in the Vetta presets that you will be using with the Talkbox. This can be done via the Amp/Cab Details menu, Page 2, Amp Only knobs.

Vetta Software and Upgrade F.A.Q.s

Vetta II has three main component differences from the original Vetta:

1- New software provides more amp models, effects, and features

2- Vetta Digital Interface card provides digital I/O plus a Variax input

3- Newly stylized box, panel, and knobs

Q. What new Amp Models are included?

A. In addition to Vetta's original 49 amp models, 24 new models have been added, plus a "Bypass" amp model, for a grand total of 74. Of the new models, 12 are new Line 6 Originals, and 12 are modeled from various classic and modern amps. The new models are:

Line 6 Originals

Line 6 Variax Acous

Line 6 Super Clean

Line 6 Super Sparkl

Line 6 Sparkle Clean

Line 6 Crunch

Line 6 Smash

Line 6 Fuzz

Line 6 Chnk Chnk

Line 6 Big Bottom

Line 6 Treadplate

Line 6 Lunatic

Line 6 Agro

Amp Model/based on

'03 Connor 50/Conford '03 mk50h

'03 Deity Crunch/Diezel '03 VH4-Crunch

'03 Deity Lead/Deizel '03 VH-4-Lead

'03 Deity's Son/Diezel '03 Herbert

'63 Fn Black Vib Verb/Fender '63 Vibroverb

'67 Fn Black Dual Show/Fender '67 Dual Showman Head

'72 Fn Silver Bass Head/Fender '72 Bassman Head

'87 Brit Gain Silver J/Marshall '87 Silver Jubilee

'92 Brit Gain J-900 Clean/Marshall '92 JCM-900-Clean ch

'92 Brit Gain J-900 Dist/Marshall '92 JCM-900-Dist ch

'03 Brit Gain J-2000/Marshall '03 JCM 2000

'02 Missippi Criminal/Peavey '02 5150 II

All product names are trademarks of their respective owners, which are in no way associated or affiliated with Line 6. These trademarks of other manufacturers are used solely to identify the products of those manufacturers whose tones and sounds were studied during Line 6's sound model development.

Q. Are there any differences between the Vetta I and Vetta II versions of the 49 original Amp Models?

A. Yes, although many of the changes are subtle. The differences break into three categories: 1) Tonal improvements due to more refined modeling since Vetta was released, 2) Drive knob scaling, to reduce volume changes over the drive range, and/or 3) Channel Volume scaling, to provide a more consistent output level from amp to amp. The end result is an even more refined tone than before. Additionally, some of the cabinet model refinements that have been made for Flextone III and HD 147 have been also made to Vetta's cabinet models.

Q. Will my original Vetta presets sound the same in Vetta II?

A. Sonically, your settings should be the same, although some level adjustment should be expected due to the changes in how the Drive and Channel Volume now work. Typically, the only manual change you should require would be to turn up or down the Channel Volume of your amp model. No change should be required to the Drive level, since the amount of drive is unchanged; only the relative output level for a given Drive setting has changed (which is controlled by the Channel Volume).

Q. What new effects are in Vetta II?

A. A handful of newly created effects have been added to Vetta II, of various types and in various categories. There are two new Distortion Stomp Boxes, five new Modulation effects that can be used as Stomp Boxes or Post Effects, two Tremolos that can now be used as Stomp Boxes, six new Modulation Post Effects including stereo modulations, a stereo post Delay, and 12 new Synth/Filt Stomp Boxes that emulate many classic monophonic synthesizers and filter sweep effects.

Q. Have there been any changes to Vetta's original effects?

A. In addition to the added effects, The Phaser model now has a feedback control, as does the Reverse Delay. Some of the reverbs have also had some subtle improvements.

Q. What's new with the Post Effects routing?

A. Vetta II now allows for the five stereo Post Effects to be connected together in any order, and each can be selected to operate in series or in parallel, or chained to create combination effects. This routing is changeable in the same simple manner that the Stomp Box effects can be routed.

Q. What else is new?

A. A long list of software improvements have been added in Vetta II. Here are some highlights:

- Multiple Volume Pedal response curves

- Double Tracker On/Off switch

- Speakers and Direct Outs switchable on or off per channel

- Improved Tuner response

- Half-power mode for controllable lower volume use

- MIDI Sysex commands for parameter editing

- Digital I/O and Variax connection support with the Vetta Digital Interface

Q. How can a Vetta be upgraded with Vetta II's features?

A. All of Vetta II's software features (which includes everything but the Vetta Digital Interface) can be downloaded into a Vetta through its MIDI interface. This download is available for free at www.line6.com to all Vetta owners. All that's required is a computer with an Internet connection and a MIDI interface. If it is desired to also add a Variax input and digital audio inputs and outputs, then a Vetta Digital Interface card is also needed (but not required for the software update).

Vetta Updates and Reflash Procedure

Vetta Hardware Changes

Q. Are the Direct Outputs different?

A. Yes. Vetta II takes advantage of the improvements to our A.I.R. II mic and cab modeling that we have since used in PODxt, the Flextone III and HD 147 amps. The Direct Output sound is now more realistic than ever.

Q. Is there a power difference between Vetta and Vetta II?

A. No. Vetta and Vetta II Combo are each 150 watts (75 watts per channel), and the Vetta and Vetta II HD are each 300 watts (150 watts per channel). These power amps are designed to have tube amplifier response, with plenty of headroom for that transient "blink" factor. The wattage of original Vetta models were rated very conservatively, resulting in smaller wattage numbers being reported.

Q. Can the cabinet and panel be upgraded?

A. With the software upgrade and the addition of the Vetta Digital Interface, any original Vetta can be brought up to complete Vetta II specifications. The only remaining difference is the look. Although not encouraged due to the cost and complexity, it is possible to update the cosmetics of a Vetta. The update entails removing the chassis and speakers from the old box and putting them into a new one, and replacing the top panel and its circuitry. Again, this update will not add any functionality or sonic improvements, since it is purely cosmetic. To perform this update, it will be required to send your Vetta to Line 6. Contact your regional Line 6 Customer Service Department for details on the cost and procedure of this upgrade.

Q. What capabilities are added with the Vetta Digital Interface?

A. Connections are provided for AES/EBU and S/PDIF digital audio inputs and outputs. The digital audio interface can operate at 16, 20, or 24-bit resolution, at sample rates up to 96KHz. The digital audio connections can be used for direct digital recording, as a digital effects loop, or for digital "re-amping" with a computer recorder or DAW.

The Vetta Digital Interface also adds a Variax input. This input is able to provide direct power for Variax, bi-directional communication between Vetta and Variax, plus a digital audio connection from Variax to Vetta. With this connection, it's possible to not only have your amps, cabs, effects, and routing change with the touch of a button, but now your guitar can as well.

Vetta and Variax Instruments

Q. What capabilities are added when using Variax with Vetta II?

A. When a Variax is digitally connected to a Vetta II, the model and pickup selection on Variax, along with its Tone control, can be stored with each Vetta II channel. Variax's settings can be set from the guitar, or Vetta II's front panel. The digital cable that connects Variax to Vetta II also provides power to the Variax, and sends Variax's digital audio directly into Vetta's Digital Signal Processors (eliminating the need to convert Variax to analog and back to digital again to get into Vetta II).

Q. How can a Vetta add the Vetta Digital Interface?

A. The Vetta II comes with the Vetta digital interface installed, and every Vetta I includes an expansion slot that can accommodate the Vetta Digital Interface. This interface is no longer available from Line 6, but may be found on the open market.

Vetta 2.5 software questions

Q: I am noticing that the Vetta 2.11 and 2.5 software versions sound a little different. Did the original amp models change?

A: There were no intentional changes to the Vetta models from v2.11 to v2.5. However, the direct outs changed, as well as the addition of the loudness function and the presence boost. These changes in the software could account for the audible differences some end users have stated that they are comparing the two software versions.

Q: Is Vetta 2.5 going to be upgraded?

A: After a painstaking review of the current issues presented in the Vetta II firmware, We have made the difficult decision that we will not be providing any additional updates to the current code. We do not take this decision lightly, and although many Vetta users have not encountered the issues that have been discussed in forums, we are very sorry for those that have been affected. Although this may not be the ideal outcome for some, we do believe there are adequate workarounds for these issues and hope that the many benefits of the Vetta II platform can continue to inspire your music for years to come.

Vetta 2.5 Known Issues

Vetta II Post Delay Mix Issue

On some patches with POST DELAY active, you will notice that if you turn DELAY off/on, the perceived mix will jump to %100. Please follow the steps below when the problem patch is active to resolve this issue:

Select FOOT CONTROL.

Scroll to Page 4 that say PEDAL 1.

Use the black knob under DEST to assign PEDAL 1 to a different parameter (an fx you are not using on the patch),

Go to page 5 and if PEDAL 2 is set to POST DELAY MIX, follow the same instructions above.

Select SAVE twice to save the changes.

Gain/Drive Reversal When Using Line 6 Edit

Drive and gain for distortion effects are reversed when loaded into Line 6 Edit: After loading a tone or changing the model selection, the drive and gain values for distortion effects are reversed when comparing the amp display to Line 6

edit. When adjusting the drive or gain using Line 6 Edit or the amp, the correct control moves and jumps to match the value of the one you are moving. This effects all distortion effects, and also happens when loading a tone.
