Fractal Audio Axe-Fx...made me sell my X3

Fractal audio is going to cause some competition with line6. My axe-fx blows away the X3 i had. The axe-fx is the most amazing thing i ever used! But why does it sound so much better than anything line6 ever put out?

I only type this because I hope line6 puts out something of the same quality. I like to see healthy competition. I've always been a fan of Line6.

Plus line6 is always affordable. The axe-fx ran me 2k. (IT's so worth the 2k though)

Not many would have the guts to post this first attempt at using a whammy bar - but I do.

You will hear me nail the harmonics and really rock on.

I may need a bit of practice to perfect it though - when I get a whammy bar that's left-handed and easier to use.

Feel free to share the settings you use, and tips on how to get that killer tone.

P.S. no band slagging - everyone is free to leave their settings as long as it comes under the headings. I may make other posts for other types of music when I get more time.

Also, if needed, requests can be entered for anyone who is really struggling for their favourite artists sound.

Finally got around to recording a few things with the new rig. There will be more to come.

This a Michael Kelly Patriot Custom (neck pickup, coil tapped) into the Egnater Renegade 65 watt head (clean channel) using the 4CM with a L6 M13. The head feeds a 1936 Marshall 2x12 with T-75s. Mic'd with an SM58 into a Toneport UX-2 into Reaper. The only post-processing I did was to mess with the levels a bit and added a limiter to squish a couple of high peaks and to slightly boost the volume overall.

The first round of playing is bone dry, no fx or anything. The 2nd set of clips uses the M13 in the loop for a rotary w/ horn and a delay (the digital w/ mod, I believe) and I used the amp's reverb.

The amp is really amazing, by the way. It has two fully independent channels, each of which have the following variables: 18/65 watt switch; a "tight/deep" switch; a "bright/normal" switch; preamp gain; eq (bass, mid, treble); "tube mix" (lets you blend any combination of the amp's 6L6 power amp with the EL34 power amp -- really cool!), master volume and reverb. There is also a shared presence, density, and "main 1" and "main 2" master volume controls. These all work with the included footswitch, which lets you switch channels, turn the fx loop on or off, turn the reverb on or off, and engage the 2nd master volume control. Each of these elements in the footswitch can be assigned to either channel or both. So if you wanted to use reverb on the clean channel but not the od channel, you can assign the footswitch to let you turn the reverb on and off for channel one but not channel two.

So I recorded some other stuff with my strat and hope to be able to post that stuff this evening. Let me know what you think and if you've got stuff you want to hear, let me know.

Beware of "NEW products...

Remember when the Variax was new? I remember the NAMM video when they were pushing the magic of the "mystery port". All the wonderful things the "mystery port" was going to provide. Well it certainly hooked alot of people into pre-ordering the Variax 500 which cost about a $1000.

And finally about 12 months later when the "mystery port" capabilities were realized it came in the form of a VERY expensive amp called the Vetta II. The only way you could access the full capabilities of the Variax was you had to purchase a Vetta II. Then they made available the Vetta I upgrade. What's that? All of this was suppose to be accessible through a computer interface? Well it finally happened but not before Line 6 dropped the price of the Variax by HALF PRICE!!

The Variax wasn't available for more than 2 years yet before they started selling it for HALF PRICE! And the full capability of the "mystery port" had not yet been developed! Thank you Line 6 for SCREWING us out of $500 bucks.

Why the sudden price drop? It's not like the speed of computer technology and the competition that goes with it. There was NO competition! Nobody had the technology and NO reason to drop the price! The technology never changed. It never improved. It is still the same technology today. Same models. Same sounds. Same stuff going into the Vaxrack whatever.

So why the price drop? Why drop the price of the Variax by half BEFORE the consumer can realize all the benefits of the technology?

I couldn't imagine Korg, Roland, Alesis, etc. pushing some great breakthrough sampler or whatever for a $1000 that will do X plus Y and Z in the very near future that NOBODY else has. "Wow, X is awesome but because it will be able to do Y and Z I'm gonna buy it!" And then W-H-A-M!! Before Y and Z is even available they sell it for HALF PRICE?! WHA?!

"Dude, you paid a 1000 dollars for your Variax 500?" "I just bought a Variax 500 AND the computer interface with software for 400 dollars less than what you paid for it." "And you just bought it 2 years ago!" "Cool."

Wow, some people are so gullible. To think that anyone would buy into the new product BS that Line 6 spews out is just amazing...

Line 6 should have AT LEAST offered the computer interface and software for FREE to those who bought the Variax 500 before the price drop. Instead they flipped them all off.

Moral of this TRUE story...Don't buy ANY new products from Line 6 until it's a couple of years in production and you might get it for half price.

And to Line 6.....I have not purchased another Line 6 product since and I tell EVERYONE this story. (flip)

I bought a kb37 about 18-19 months ago, I mostly use it for gtar/bass stuff but I use the keys sometimes...

Anyway I go to use it on the weekend... low and behold about 8 of the keys no longer function (yes I tried diff usb cables, reinstalling drivers etc etc).

I checked the warranty and d'oh only 12 months.

Ok so I thought great this is a pain in the neck not too mention I was (and still am) pretty angry about the poor life of the product

so I contacted the service centre listed by line6 (im in Australia for those of you who want to know there is only one service centre listed)... luckily for me

its not too far from home...

They then proceed to tell me that they do not deal with any out-of-warranty repairs

(People at line6 if you are going to allow somewhere to be a service centre make sure its a service centre not a sorry-we-dont-do-that centre)

They told me I could try taking the kb37 to some electronics place about 40mins drive away.

Already after this experience I'm almost tempted to forget it and cut my losses and go buy something else, unfortunately I had to fork out 600 bucks for this P.O.S. (I knew I should have bought that presonus interface...)

So if you're reading this steer away from these rubbish products and get something else!

I wonder if others have had similar problems.

(If you cant tell I'm very p----d off!)

Problems getting Superior Drummer 2.0 to work with iMac & Cubase4LE

I have barely started multi-track recording on a computer after using a Roland VS-880 & Korg D3200 hard disc recorders for years. I just bought Superior Drummer 2.0 (S2.0) yesterday and had a difficult time downloading all of S2.0 and all of the related items. I have never used drum software in a computer until yesterday. I have a new iMac with almost a terrabyte of free disc space. First, I downloaded all of S2.0 & related items & updates off the toontrack website, no problem. Not sure if it was OK to download all of that internet stuff first. Then I downloaded DVD Disk #1 for S2.0, no problem, I think that was the disc where I went for the full 20 gig version. After about an hour of downloading, it said to insert Disk #2, so I ejected Disk #1. It kept spitting out S2.0 disk #2 after I would put it in the computer. So, for the first time I tried putting the blue EZDrummer/EZPlayer pro/Claustrophobic EZX/Twisted EZX DVD disk #1 in the computer. It spit that disk out twice. So I went back to trying to download S2.0 disk #2. After many tries, I eventuaully downloaded that disk #2 (its files) into an empty 00000@_SUPERIOR LIBRARIES file folder. I did a similar thing with S2.0 disk #3, #4, and #5. I couldn't get S2.0 to open, so I downloaded the smaller (less than 10 gig version) of S2.0 from S2.0 disk #1. Then it said to download S2.0 disk #2, and I did that after several attempts (after spitting out the DVD repeatedly). It didn't say to download S2.0 disk #3, #4, or #5. Once again I tried to download the blue EZDrummer/EZPlayer pro/Claustrophobic EZX/Twisted EZX DVD disk #1 in the computer. It spit that out twice, so I gave up on that. I am using Cubase LE4. Here are my iMac specs (with Snow Leopard 10.6.1):

I can open Toontrack solo OK, and it can play the different Grooves OK. When I go to a MIDI folder, there are the following files: 000@_EZ_PLAYER, 002@EZPLAYER_PRO_MIDI, 20@_USER_LIBRARIES, MY MIDIFILES, but they are all empty. In Cubase LE4, it says Superior Drummer is the VST Instrument. On Toontrack solo Library, it only has S1 - Drummer, S1 - Percussionist, S1 - Cocktail, and N.Y. Avatar. I can't figure out how to set the paths for dfh Superior, Custom & Vintage, and Vintage add-on. Can't get toontrack drums to play within Cubase recorded song. HELP PLEASE!!!

After 3 more attempts I got the iMac to accept the blue EZDrummer/EZPlayer pro/Claustrophobic EZX/Twisted EZX DVD disk #1 without spitting it out. I tried to download it over 10 times & it gives me this message every time: "! The installation failed. The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

When I bought S2.0, Guitar Center handed me a box with 7 DVD's in it: 5 for S2.0 and 2 blue ones. One blue one: EZDrummer/EZPlayer pro/Claustrophobic EZX/Twisted EZX DVD disk #1. The other blue one: Drumkit From H ell EZX/Latin Percussion EZX/Vintage Rock EZX/Nashville EZX Disc 2. Is it necessary to download the EZDrummer to get S2.0 to work? I didn't pay for EZDrummer separately. Did Guitar Center accidently give me EZDrummer for free?

Digidesign Eleven Rack is out, what next from Line 6?

Digidesign brought out the Eleven Rack and I'm wondering what Line 6 will show up next.

Although much stuff one can do with the Eleven Rack also may be done with Line 6 stuff, there are some things only the Digidesign box can do and they say it sounds better. On the other hand it has less amp models and there's no floorboard for example and it costs a little bit more, but then also includes a version of Pro Tools, so I maybe beates the price you will have to pay for a X3 pro and some professional recording software.

Spider Valve MKii - Mesa and Agro (Metal) models compared to original

Is it me, or does anyone else think that the Mesa and Agro (orange and blue metal) models are better on the original Spider Valve. I spent over an hour with the MKii 112 today in the loud room at GC. The new amp models, effects, and controls were all excellent. However, the aforementioned models did not sound near as good to me as they do on the original SV. I've A/B'ed them, and the original models are much stronger and clearer. The original mesa model retained much more note definition and clarity. The new model sounded muddier. The agro (blue metal) sounded quite a bit weaker to me on the MKii than on the original.

I noticed the same differences on the regular Spider III vs Spider IV as well.

I gig regularly with my Spider Valve, and I couldn't wait for the MKii. These two models are a deal-breaker for me though. I use these two models during many parts of my gigs, so this becomes a deal-breaker for me. Sucks too, because I love everything else about it.

Any thoughts?

I stopped by on my lunch hour to just to fool around and see what they had in the used section. I saw a used JVM210H there and thought I'd give it a run with a nice looking used LP Studio. With head/cab combos I always check to see if the cab is properly hooked up because 9 times out of 10, it isn't. This was no exception. The speaker cable was hooked to 16 ohm on the head and 4 ohm on the cab. So I fixed that.

Turned it on, warmed it up and kept the master volume way down. Went off standby and it was quiet. Really quiet. Turned up the master a little more. Still very quiet. Turned up the channel volume halfway. Still quiet. Turned up the master to 5. Still lower than bedroom level. Really? For a 100 watt tube head?

Sales dood said he didn't think there was anything wrong with the head. Really? I turned up all volumes to max. Still lower than bedroom level. Well, he said, maybe the tubes are bad but it still sounds decent. Really? I have distortion pedals that sound better than this.

Bottom line, don't believe a thing a GC employee tells you. Especially about used gear.

Want to do this on the cheap. Willing to buy new/used/whatever. Willing to build my own from a kit. Having browsed teles for the better part of the last 2 years, I've got a few "must haves" on the guitar, which include:

(1) maple neck and fretboard. Non-negotiable.

(2) two pickups, single coil. Also non-negotiable.

(3) color needs to be consistent with the vintage look. Surf green, vintage cream, butterscotch. I saw a copper one that looked pretty cool.

I'm not normally such a "show" guy w/ guitars, but I have a weird thing with tele's. Dunno why.

Options I've looked at, from lowest to highest price include:

(1) build your own kit, e.g. http://store.guitarfetish.com/testgukifete.html

Advantages: Cheap. Can paint whatever color I like. Will learn a bit about guitar hardware.

Disadvantages: I'd have to buy a different neck (see req. #1, above). Pups probably suck. Even a master builder might end up with a lemon. I'm likely to botch the whole thing b/c of lack of experience, skill and talent.

(2) buy a bottom of the barrel knockoff, e.g. http://store.guitarfetish.com/xvsicusobo.html or http://www.rondomusic.com/stl50.html

Advantages: Cheap. Get to bit*h if someone else screws up the build. Can upgrade components as needed (presumably easier than building one from scratch, but maybe not).

Disadvantages: Like will get what I pay for. All components likely suck.

(3) buy cheap, new Squier tele, maybe even the "Vintage Vibe" tele that seems to be getting great reviews.

Advantages: Brand name/returnable w/ 30 day return policy. Vintage vibe line gets really good reviews, probably not a bad starter tele.

Disadvantages: More expensive than other approaches. Still may not sound good and/or feel good.

(4) buy good, used tele - maybe a MIM or even MIJ Fender?

Advantages: can spend less on a project guitar that I can mod as I like. Can spend more and get a player. Can modify with neck/pups as I like.

Disadvantages: no guarantees, likely more expensive, the more I have to do re project work the more opporunities I have to screw it up.

I'm actually willing to consider selling my very, very nice American Deluxe 50th Anniversary strat (worth roughly $1,000) to buy a less expensive nice strat and use the extra to finance a nice tele.

Please let me know your thoughts, experiences, speculation, whatever.

Moding an Spider Valve to avoid disconnection of the Preamp Out feed to the tube amp when plugging into the Poweramp In

Hey guys!

Has anyone come up with (or can think of) a mod for the Spider Valve that could override the internal control that internally disconnects the Preamp Out feed to the tube amp when you plug into the Poweramp In jack?

See I’m kind of a routing freak! In my rig I have several effects chains (which include Pod X3 Live for both effects and preamp sims) and several amps that I combined them with. For that I have several custom made routing switches that work pretty great allowing me to choose in every amp in which input jack I want to put the signal.

The Spider Valve is one of my favorite amps so I wanna hook it up to my rig in a way that I can choose if I want the guitar signal to go into the Input jack (front), the Poweramp jack (back) or through both and the Preamp Out jack (for use with 4 cables method) depending on the chain I want to use.

But this represents a problem because I need cables hooked to all inputs at the same time all the time. When I do this to the Spider Valve, the Poweramp jack pretty much disconnects the Input jack (because what it does is send the signal out through the Preamp Out) no matter if there’s no signal coming into the Poweramp jack. Just by the fact that something is connected there, it does the disconnection.

Just to illustrate this imagine the following:

Guitar goes into an effects chain (made of fully true bypass stomps) and a Whammy and a Compressor are activated. Then it goes into the Input jack of the Spider Valve (passing through Strymon’s SVPre) where I use the Amber Blues model. But then for another part of the song I wanna change to a different effects chain that has the Pod X3 Live in it. I click a toggle in my routing switch and go into the Pod where I select a patch the has a RMC Real McCoy Wah in front of an Orange AD30TC amp which then I need to send into the Poweramp sections of the Spider Valve so that it passes through the tubes and gets amplified (this time I can’t go into the Input jack because I’ll be stacking to preamps… the one in the Spider Valve and the one selected in the Pod X3 Live).

See what I’m doing? I like the freedom to select where I want my signal whether that’s in different amps or in specific jacks within the same amp. But I can’t to this with the Spider Valve because when something is plugged into the Poweramp jack it overrides the Input jack. For all I know a dummy 1/4 cable could be connected there with no signal at all and it will still override the Input jack.

This is a shame because I’m really in love with the options that the Spider Valve can offer me and I wanna included in this scheme I use. So the only thing I can think of is taking my SV to some tech so that he can moded for me in some way that will allow me to do this, but first I wanted to check with you guys here at the forum and see if I could get some good ideas!

I recently traded a guy my 1981 Acoustic Corp G60 2X12 combo, that's a really awesome SS amp that never use anymore, for a 2000 7 string Epiphone Les Paul. I've always want a 7 string or a baritone guitar so this was a good opportunity to do so. Now I don't want to sound high on my horse, but I've been playing guitar almost 18 years. When I first started playing I played a few Squire Strats and low end Jacksons, but soon found myself wanting to play a the higher end stuff. So moved on. I got a 79' Strat a couple Gibson Explorers and V's, an ESP Custom Explorer. I never waste my time looking at the Squires, Epiphiones or low end anything anymore. I reconize that the right guitar is whatever and one should be able to get good tone from even the crappiest gear. What's my point? I'm am really impressed with this Epiphone. The guy put locking tuners on it and EMG 707's in it and that's sold me on it, since I like EMG's. However the guitar itself play great and looks great. The guy at the guitar shop that did the setup on it commented on the quaility of it and I agree. He had an Epiphone SG Elite that messed around on and I was blown away by the quality of that one too. I've never been an Ibanez fan, but I was impressed the new Destroyer that I picked at a guitar store in Gainesville the other day. I guess I need to not be so quick to dismiss something because of name or price.

I was just noodling around in the music store and an old friend that works there was saying that his band was looking for a lead player....he knew i did a single act before so he didn't think i would be interested....neither did I haha.

It sounded like the rest of the band was really easy going and he really liked playing with them. So I said to him, "ya know, i play a little..." He seemed pretty happy about that idea, and suddenly i was wondering...what did I say that for?

I liked playing in bands, but I hated when stuff went sour between people...or when it was time to quit. Doing a single act had pluses and minuses, too. The fear of commitment was what came up again right away. I didn't want to get myself in some of the spots I've been in in the past. So i figured I would just jam for fun and see what happened, and be totally honest about where i'm coming from and what i'm looking for.

It turns out the band is really cool older guys and a nice chick singer, and want to do some corporate gigs and casinos. That is pretty much the main things i would want in a band at this point. Good people, good paying gigs, someone I know for years in the band, no babysitting and drama, just take care of my end of things and have fun.

So it's been coming for a couple months now, lots of delays and anticipation by now. I guess it was actually more of an audition tonight. The other guitar player played a PRS and XTLive for effects with a MarshalI. I took my PRS and X3L with that little black box in the loop out and ran it through the board and a little keyboard amp for my monitor.

Man, did it sound good! It was really fun. They are a great bunch, calm (good because i'm a little hyper haha) talented, and they actually applauded after I played the slide stuff on Tush! It all felt pretty good. I think everyone was pretty happy and excited to get going. So far, so good

M13 Delay - U2 settings (The Edge)

... so apologies in advance... I've done my best to answer most of the below in FAQs etc :-)

I've been looking into getting an X3 Pro but have a number of questions, many of which I've Googled but there are a few I'm not sure on if you good people could indulge me...

1 - How good is the Tremolo? (i.e. is it usable, what settings can you control etc)

2 - If I get the basic foot controller (FBV2) the website days you can flick through "the first bank of four presets"... does this mean you literally only have access to of one bank of presets? Or does it mean you can you go up and down ABC and D of whichever bank you happen to be in? (which would be ideal)

3 - Stomp Box editing... am I correct in assuming the four black rotarys below the screen basically become your fx knobs when you're editing a pedal? (tone, gain etc)?

The reason being I do like to "fiddle" with sounds, which is why I've always used pedals, and I'd hate to feel trapped behind menus when it comes to speedily tweaking the amount of effect. I get the impression though you just select the stomp box and use these controllers? i.e. super easy??

4 - Is the tuner good? Small point but I'm trying to get rid of carrying pedals.

5 - To create a new preset from scracth, what's the default "blank" setting? Is it literally amp1/speaker1 and no fx... what I'm driving at is if, say, I just want one stomp box on a JCM800 is it a case of turning more stuff off then on? My main concern with moving to a beast like the X3 is I do tend to like quite simple dry sounds and I'm concerned I'll end up using too many fx... so I need assurance it's very easy to create simple set-ups.

6 (last one I promise) - It seems although there are acoustic settings, there's isn't an "acoustic simulator". Is it possible to get "accousticy" sounds from an flat body or semi regardless?

Just to give you the background to this, I current use a Behringer V-Amp which is ok but lacking in a few fx I require (main a tremolo) and the filth isn't great either... so I'm debating whether to replace it with an X3 or just buy a couple of extra fx boxes

one of my newer songs. I dont usually do this style, but I picked it up pretty quick. I've become obsessed with sidechaining these days. you will hear it most audibly on the bass synth.

this whole song was done in FL-Studio 9 XXL signature edition. I know just about everyone on these forums is a metalhead/rocker, and probably doesnt much care for electronica. Im also a metalhead, but I dont produce that music much anymore. I've got a VST spisific for converting guitar sounds to midi. since I know it better, it has become a better midi controller.

Hey, I'm first! Cool!

We just got a new singer for my band. A very emotional time.

We'd gotten to the point where we were able to take the next step, from being a bunch of people on stage playing original songs, to a band, with an identity, sound and style. I don't know if this makes sense, but we were growing from a good band to a potentially great band. The problem was our singer wasn't there. She is a great singer, great lyricist, but she's only been doing this for 2 years. She just doesn't have the experience. She doesn't understand what it takes to go from good to great. We've been as encouraging as possible, discussing what we all need to do to step up to the next level and she just doesn't get it.

It takes work. Pure and simple. Practice, of course. But that's expected. At this level, there is no excuse not to have your stuff down. After that, though, is all the band work. Finding shows, making flyers, setting ups practices, maintaining a presence at shows and on the web and beyond, creating and maintaining a mailing list, sending out demos-both virtual and real, getting on compilations, then the real fun stuff...moving equipment, setting up equipment, trouble shooting equipment, packing and unpacking equipment, transporting said equipment, staying till 2 am because you lent the closing band equipment.....

Anyway, we've gotten to a point where we need not only a great singer, we need a great stage presence and someone eager to do some work.

So, we got someone!
A great singer, with great stage presence, eager and willing to work. We have to write melodies and lyrics to all our old stuff, so there's a lot of work to be done, but it looks like she's up to it. We have a show booked in two weeks! If we can get 5 songs down, which is a lot of work, but doable, we'll be set.

I may be way behind here...but if anyone has not seen the Jeff Beck "Live at Ronnie Scott's"....dvd....find it and prepare to be blown away....

It is simply amazing...the whole band and the way they all work together...the songs...etc....

Look guys...this is one of the top 5 all time concerts I've ever seen on dvd...even if you are not a JB fan..and maybe some of you younger cats that don't quite get what JB is all about.......this dvd will clear it up...

oh...did I mention Tal on bass? Vinnie on drums? and a cat I've never heard of on keys.......a guest spot from Joss Stone, Eric Clapton, Imogen Heep....(sp)

(oh....and imo....I like EC...but the way JB plays on this....he takes Eric to Blues School...EC is on cruise control I think...and he simply gets blown off the stage by JB...but again...only my opine)

I truely believe that there are other real musicians out there in the world, but they are often so hard to find.

These days a lot of people conduct their whole lives online... they use email texting and IM instead of calling people. They use Facebook as a social interaction experience, probably where in the past you would go down the pub.

So why not start a band online?

I realise that this has actually happened already, and there is an online band or two out there, but I thought it might be an interesting way to have a laugh.

Is anyone else interested in giving it a go and trying to write a few songs (if that's even possible over the internet), perhaps for a myspace page, just for kicks?

Recording Cover Songs

Bedroom Amp Choices

I'm currently using a Toneport UX1 for all my guitar needs but my crappy PC speakers aren't cutting it for me when I want to play for other people. I'd like to buy an amp for bedroom use only but i'm confused by the choice available.

Could you give me a few suggestions on what models I should be looking at as i'm a total novice when it comes to amps. If money was no problem would you go for the Vetta or would that be total overkill? I'd like to buy something nice, not just something that will do the job for now. Would I be better off buying some decent speakers/monitors for my PC?

Yes indeed, BIG congratulations to Line 6, because this is the third forum they have had since I have been registered, and not once, that is to say, not one single time, has changing the forum layout and software actually improved anything at all. All the changes have been for the worse.

That's not easy to do!

I own a Variax 500 electric, a 700 acoustic, and a 705 bass. It used to be possible to log on to forums dedicated to those specific instruments (well to those specific families of instruments, actually) but those dedicated forums have now been abolished. So if I ever have a problem with one of those instruments, or if I need some particular bit of knowledge or advice, I know exactly where there is no point in looking for help: the Official Forum!

There used to be specific forums dedicated to specific families of hardware and those too have been abolished. And the reason I came here was to give some further thought to a possible purchase of the Pod X3 Pro; I wanted to see what kind of opinions current users had, and if, inter alia, there was any word on adding the very basic and necessary sync-to-DAW-tempo function. But no, those forums too no longer exist. Yay!

I'm looking at getting a Tascam US-122L USB Audio/MIDI interface (about $130). I have never done multi-track recording on a computer. I want to be able to sync to my old MIDI hardware, and be able to use something like EZDrummer. The Tascam comes with Cubase LE4. Doing research on the Tascam, some people think it's great for the price, but some people had it work poorly. I plan on still using my Korg D3200 hard disc recorder a lot, but can't do EZDrummer without a computer. Comments on a new iMac/Tascam combo?

Thought you guys might like to read this little tutorial I wrote on how to play by ear. I've seen 3 year-olds and 75 year-olds have success, so you can too. Not to mention it forms the core of a music degree ear training course, but most guitarists aren't familiar with it.

The method is solfege, and see how to apply it directly to the guitar here:

Being familiar with solfege will enable you to play by ear (i.e. play what ever you hear in your head or hear on a CD, and allows you to write it down - very helpful for composing), transcribe very easily, and gives you the ability to read a piece of sheet music and hear exactly how it sounds in your head without picking up an instrument.

Pod X3 Live thoughts

Before I start let me tell you all my background with line6 is almost 10 years if I'm not mistaken. I've had few xt lives also I own a Variax 300, a toneport and like less than a year bought a POD X3 Live.

I don't see a major fallow from Line6 and even people who own it too. For all the other products I see more interest but I feel like we, POd X3 owners are left behind. I'm always researching inf regarding new products and so on but for the X3 if you look around there's nothing much left to wish.

I remember the old days when the online community for the XT was florished and we were the top of the top regarding effects. Now is like just complaints an so on.

What happened? I don't understand why we and I include myself cannot support more the products we like and we use the most.

I don't wanna critize other products from another companies but as far as I see now even smaller and horrible products have more acceptance around.

I am happy with my X3 the only thing that I wish is that we were more expose and participate helping this community to see the benefit of our products.

I have a POD XT Live and before I go into my question I'd like to give you a quick run of my setup:

Guitar: Jackson PC1

FX: POD XT Live [Main Set-up in POD: Noise Gate - Red Comp - Chorus - Mesa Triple Rectifier - Delay and Reverb (low in the mix).No compression, EQ or Wah.]

Amp: Tube Works Tube Driver TD752 Head

Cab: 4x12 Crate

I hooked up my POD via the effects return on my amp. So I'm using the head's solid state as a power amp and get my sound via the POD Modulation and so forth. My MODULATION and DELAY are routed "pre" in the POD.

I have two basic questions:

1. Are the "stomp", "mod" and "delay" effects patched in the POD as they would be using pedals in an effects loop? Or are they patched in front of the amp?

2. In your opinion, where is the best sound attainable - pre or post on Mod and Delay?

All opinions and suggestions are welcome.

Spidervalve 212 volume issues

Im having what i think is a volume issue with my Spidervalve 212. When i switch from the clean up to the insane channels the volume on the amp jumps to an insane volume until i move the channel volume either slightly up or down . This is even when the master volume is low. I know that you need to save the patches to level out the volume on each one and i have done that but im talking about just changing from the clean up to insane without changing the patches. Is this normal or do i have a problem ? Any help would be much appreciated.

Line 6 FBV pedal Problem

heres my detailed problem... all lights on fbv go on (so they are actually working), then after some seconds only "vol" led turns on. At this stage I can change between A to D, pedal is not doing anything although when I press it hard the sound changes and the "vol" light goes off but the effect is not controlled

Then I do as it's written in the instruction you offered:

1) Unplug the RJ45 cable from your FBV EXPRESS

2) Move the expression pedal all the way to the toe down position

3) Hold down the A and D switches

4) Plug in your RJ45 with the switches still depressed and hold this for 10 seconds (you will see the LED go blank)

- that's when something is wrong - I press the switches, plug in the cable, lights flash, then I wait for about 10 seconds, when it's about 8 seconds - the "vol" lights on and it doesn't go blank

5) Move the expression pedal to the heel position and then all the way forward to the toe.

- then I do this, the "vol" led slightly flashes while moving the pedal (I guess it's ok)

6) Shift all of your weight to the toe position (you will want to stand up) until the WAH light switches on.

- I do this, but the "vol" light goes off and the "wah" light doesn't go on

7) Wait 10 seconds and click back to VOL. Your FBV EXPRESS is now calibrated.

- I wait and try to change back to "vol" but nothing lights on again.

So finally I get the completely blank fbv with no lights on which still changes presets A to D and hard press on the pedal changes from volume to wah but the effects themselves aren't controlled.

And when I turn the whole thing off and then on I get what I had at the start - same, just with "vol" led on.

i dont know what to do .

If L6 combined the M13 & X3 they might have an Axe-Fx fighter on their hands...

When the M13 came out I didn't pay much attention because I already own an X3L, and I only use it for direct recording or playing into a PA at church. I don't even own an amp, so getting something like the M13 seemed like a waste. I also viewed the M13 as an X3 without amp modeling, so it would seem redundant to buy one.

A couple days ago I stumbled on to some YouTube vids with the M13 and I was very impressed. The M13 does some things that the X3 cannot. The looper function is very cool, the effects seem to sound better than the X3, and the ability to get those shimmery/stacked delay/U2ish sounds is very cool. I noticed that a lot of the guys posting vids of the M13 were also Axe-Fx owners - so there must be some things that the M13 can do more easily than the Axe-Fx.

I am not really a fan of U2, but those shimmery delay sounds would be useful for recording my own stuff or using them in a praise band situation. I wish I could get those with the X3. I know you can fake it - but I have never heard anyone get an X3 to really nail that sound the way the M13 can.

So I have a problem - I love the sounds of the M13, but I need the amp and cabinet models of the X3. I suppose I could buy an M13 and run it into my X3, but it would be cumbersome to lug around 2 pedalboards everywhere. This got me to thinking - if Line 6 would combine the looper, improved effects, and ability to stack multiple delays and effects any way you want (M13) with the amp and cabinet models of the X3 (along with the ability to tweak the cabinet and mics a little more like Fractal) then they would really have something.

If they packaged this as a rackmount with a matching foot controller (like Digitech does with the GSP1101) that would be amazing. I bet L6 could build this and price it competetively ($999?) and I bet the number of people switching to Fractal would slow way down. Sure - the high school kids that can barely scrape $300-400 together will not be able to afford it, but most amateur/home recording/casual players that I know would be willing to pay $1000 for the product I am describing.

What do you guys think? I think L6 could do it........but will they?

Not up to much. Just one gig a month for us. At our average ages, that's about all we can stand anymore. Having one hell of a time booking April. But we got a great show coming up in a couple of weeks.

Guitar-wise, we're a Line6 band. I use a Spider Valve HD100, POD X3 Pro, FBV Shortboard, FBV Express and XDS-Plus Wireless. Lead player uses a Vetta II combo and 212 extension, FBV, and XDS-Plus Wireless. Sometimes we record using a TonePort UX-8.

Good evening all,

I have been playing guitar for the last 15 years or so, mainly as a hobby, nothing serious. I am thinking about getting in with a band and need to re-think some of my gear. I have been using the Guitar Port for a while and love Gear Box but I have been feeling that I need more physically interactive gear. I am going to purchase the POD XT Live. What I am not educated about is studio/live set-ups. I know that Line 6 has many "Amp" models. In order to take advantage of these I don't think that it would be best to run my new XT Live through my old Peavy Bandit 112 guitar amp. I was wondering what would be a good choice to come out of the XT Live with? I was told that a couple of monitors or a power-amp and a half stack would be good too. What do you think? Pocket Pod Fix...Two Years In The Making

As I mark the two year anniversary of being foolish enough to spend money on the "Pocket Pod", I admit I am equally as foolish for checking back here from time to time to get that "Pocket Pod Firmware Update". This is my last "peek".

Next move - filing joint complaints with Attorney Generals' offices in both my state and Line 6' corporate business state of California. Legally the complaint must be filed in California but adding my own state in the mix will get Line 6 some additional legal correspondence. There is no time limitations on this as documents provided by Line 6 have insisted "we're working on it".

Hell no I don't care about $130 ...but I do care about companies that prey on young people with limited funds ( I'm old and can afford the toys - but - I'm still foolish! ). I do care about the attitude of corporations that thumb their noses at customers once the money is spent. A little free publicity and some litigation can often work wonders.

Hats off to those of you willing to be taken by Line 6 more than once. I envy your patience and naivete.

I looked into shipito.com and it's a legitimate freight forwarding company. As far as I can tell, so long as this guy pays w/ Paypal and has the address in Torrance, CA as his confirmed Paypal address, I'll avoid getting scammed, yes?

I told him that (1) so long as he agreed that my only obligation was to ship it to the shipito.com folks and (2) that I'm not responsible for any potential damage during shipping, I'm probably ok with it. I told him not to bid unless he agreed to these terms in writing. I haven't yet heard back.

Scam? Fraud?

And while I appreciate those of you who don't think I should sell my strat -- trust me, I hear you, but for what it's worth I can get at least 2 and maybe even three nice guitars. That ship has sailed, so to speak.

Need a little help with my UX2

Hi there,

recently got the UX2 + pod farm add-ons so I could enjoy a line6 audio interface without usb audio drop-outs.

I also own the X3, but the drop-outs made it impossible to use as interface.

But my question:

Is there a way to plug something in the stereo Line inputs and not have to open pod farm with latency and all that?

Lowering the latency all the way doesn't remove the latency completely.

The inputs only start working when I open pod farm or cubase... isn't this strange for a normal stereo line input??

I don't want this, I just want to monitor the line stereo channel in real time.. whenever i want in windows...

I can switch to the pod to do this (somehow the pod x3l has no problem doing this...) but I don't want to have to switch back and forth all the time because of the drop-outs...

So If anyone knows, help would be awesome!

Well here's a thread I've been meaning to post for about a year now, but kept changing my mind about posting it for some reason.

Perhaps a few of you are old enough to remember a brilliant UK guitarist/vibraphonist/pianist/vocalist from the 70's and 80's named Ollie Halsall. Sadly, he passed away in 1993 due to complications from years of heroin abuse. Anyway, I've recently read some biographies and some archived interviews on the web about Ollie. A certain fact that seems to be very consistent about him is the fact that he did not listen to Rock music and/or the music of any of his peers (if anyone can even be considered that). And the reason that he gave for NOT doing that is that he did not want to be influenced by anyone else's styles and/or techniques. This actually becomes apparent when you listen to his music. Another interesting fact is that he is to me one of the greatest electric Rock/Jazz guitarist of all time and almost no one has ever even heard of him. He was very humble and non-pretentious and not impressed by mega-fame.

I don't have a lot of his music, but I have two Patto (one of the UK bands he was in) albums; from 1971 and 1972. I'm trying to get to my point, but I had to give a little background first because I fear many of you may not have ever heard of Ollie Halsall.

What I would like to know is this: What do you think about the idea of not listening to the kind of music that you actually play in your band or whatever?? Do you think this concept has some merit to it? I think it does myself, and I think that Ollie Halsall is a very good example of it.

Hi guys. I just installed Ubuntu Studio Linux on my HP dv6646us laptop, and I installed the Line 6 Line Monkey and Pod Farm using Wine. Wine allows one to install Windows programs under Linux. I don't know if there is much of a call for this among Line 6 users, but I thought I'd bring it up anyway because Ubuntu Studio Linux, and 64Studio Linux, as well, are for multimedia production both for the home hobbyist and the engineering professional.

Spider 3 75 Watt has a preset for "No More Tears" but it does not have the crunch or warmth I am searching for. Basically, it does not sound like Zakk. Why do my recordings sound muffled? (pod x3)

Hey Guys,

I have an ibanez 4 string bass and a 6 string les paul guitar

whenever i hook those guys into my pod and hook my pod to my computer and record it sounds muffled like im only getting the low end of the sound or something.

i've tried using both reaper and audacity both with the same effect.

I've tried using the mic port on my comp (connecting a fat cable to the mic port with a big to small adapter) as well as connecting over a usb cable

the settings on my pod are that everything is off (no amp, stop, mod, delay or verb) and the bass, middle, treble are all at middle.

drive is at "none"

tone volume is mid, master volume is mid.

i've tried messing with the outputs (ie studio direct vs the other settings) but nothing seems to work

does anyone have any advice?

My band tried doing some video at our last couple of practices.....we are not very good, but thought you might get a laugh outta watching....the video is pretty dark at times...I used my Variax500 into a Podxtlive....running thru the effects loop of a flextone3xl to monitor, with the xlr outs from the flextone into the PA...not to happy with my tone..need to tweek

I have a Fender 70's re-issue strat that I bought last year and was contemplating dressing it up a little with some gold. I bought some Fender Hot Noiseless pups for it and those have a gold "Noiseless" logo on them, (so do the knobs) which is why I was thinking about it in the first place. It would cost like $100 to do it, bridge, jack, tuning pegs, trees, screws, the whole nine. I was wondering if anyone else has done this....

A thought on the whole Fractal vs Line 6 thing

I was just going through the Fractal Wiki and realized that the main difference between the Fractal and the X3, for example, is that the Fractal allows you to control every component, every parameter, sometimes beyond what would be commercially available. Everything is open to you.

The X3 takes the approach of doing a lot of the tweaking for you and not allowing you unfettered access to every aspect of the sound. It imposes practical bounderies on the sound.

I guess it all boils down to what kind of tone head you are. What level of tweaking do you enjoy? I'm at the XTL level. Plenty of amps, cabs and effects to choose from, easily save and load tones and tweak them on the fly. Dual tones are fantastic, but that's just a bit too much tweaking for me. I need more than the original POD-computer interface, easy access, great UI, but I don't need that much access to the parameters. The AxeFX would drive me mad, I think. I love tweaking, but there's a point where you have to say 'I've done all I can. It's a damn good tone.' and start playing the guitar.

IMHO,You've got to balance the desire for perfection against reality. I mean, why are you doing this? To make your guitar sound good. Well, your guitar may sound good, but you won't, not if you spend more time tweaking than playing. At some point, tweaking must end and playing begin.

Also, there's something to be said for having a limited pallet to draw from. It forces you to explore that tone to the full extent of it's capabilities, instead of just reaching for the 'More' button. It makes you work and put more of yourself into the music. Just like Jimi Hendrix and the Stratocaster. He was master of his guitar. He ripped every thing he could out of it. He knew all the nuances of the body, neck and electronics, not to mention the trem bar.

You can do the same thing with a tone. Learn it's strengths and weaknesses, it's idiosyncracies and specialities. When does it feedback? How does it react to the volume control on the guitar? What happens with palm muting? How well do the high notes project?

You might learn a lot.

So, again, it all goes back to what kind of tone hound you are.

I've done a song with the ux2 and i'd like to know what you think of it.

before doing me the favor to listen to it...

some "disclaimers":

- there aren't any real lyrics yet (i've recorded the vocals in 10min,early in the morning so it is what it is...)

- i've tried to fake an acoustic guitar with my telecaster by using one of the presets of the podfarm so it's not the best you could get...

- drums/bass are midi based

- high tones are too... well, high when listened with basic in-ear headphones (i've mixed with sennheiser headphones and it got me!)

- the real intro is missing (missing the main guitar) and there aren't any guitars for the verses part yet...

so as you can see this is still a song in progress!

i use the highway 100 simulation for the guitars with the pro co as the disto.

used the lumpy phase with the bias tremolo for the intro

and i've recorded the vocals with an audio technica mic with the 'joli voix' preset where i just got rid off the delay...

guess that's all!

Using pre-release or beta software - A short rant

Is it just me or do others also believe that people who have to ask why something doesn't work when using pre-release or beta software, shouldn't have access to that pre-release or beta software?

Seriously, if they lack the common sense to understand that if they install pre-release or beta software (operating systems) on their computer there is a very high chance things are going to stop working, then they clearly lack the capacity to operate any piece of technical equipment and should not be allowed anywhere near a computer.

Having to ask why things don't work while running Windoze 7 speaks volumes about the person who has installed it on his computer.

Isn't this why we keep todlers away from paperclips and power sockets?

Gig disaster stories & near misses

Had a great gig disaster on Friday. My 80's hard rock cover band was playing in a venue that used to do live music a decade ago and now wants to get back into it. Anyways, they paid nice and built a great drum riser since they took out their old stage. The weekend ended up OK, but had a perfect onstage moment after the first song. Since the club no longer did music they didn't have their own PA gear. We've been slowly building up our practice space PA to the point where we felt confident enough to fill a room that sized. Got everything all set up and the sound check went pretty good. Since it was a new place we were playing we really rallied the friends of the band to show up on the first night to make a good impression. Did our usual "you ready to surrender to the power and glory of rock and roll" schtick to get the crowd going and tore into the first song. Sounded good and then went to the mic to say thank you and nothing from our PA except a faint burning smell. Quickly went to the head and saw that there was no power. Checked the fuse and still nothing. After about five minutes it came back, although it was quickly apparent we blew out half of the power amp. Had it running bridged and that and the right side were now gone, but luckily the left side still worked. Got it back up and running, pulled everything but the vocals and made it through the night. Club owner was still happy for the largest Friday night she had in a while and our friends said that while not sounding as good as other places, it was fine. By the last set you could just hear the vocals sounding like they were on the verge of melt down.

Hadn't had that "now what" feeling on stage in a long time. Good news is that we took some of the money we made and upgraded to a used power amp that had a lot more power and used the damaged powered mixer as just a mixer with the pre amp outs the next night. Bad news was you can pack a place with your friends only one night in a row and that place was a ghost town the next night. Although we did get some friendly local hecklers who kept yelling for us to blow up our PA again. To make them happy our bass player drunkenly leaped into one of our new light stands smashing a couple bulbs during the second set.

The total damages for the weekend were a half blown head, cost of a new power amp, busted lights that we had for about 48 hours, other guitarist broke his cord off in his input jack when he through his les paul in the air and then missed it, full band hangover Saturday since the owner threw in free booze all Friday night (but thought better of it the next night and limited it to a drink a set) and a blister on the drummers thumb. At least we got asked back.

Probably qualifies as a near miss. Let's hear your stories.

Is it possible to transfer tones from the Guitar Port to the HD100?

Tuning

Though rarely discussed, one of the most distinctive aspects of Van Halen's sound was Eddie's tuning of the guitar. Before Van Halen, most distorted, metal-oriented rock consciously avoided the use of the major third interval in guitar chords, creating instead the signature power chord of the genre. When run through a distorted amplifier, the rapid beating of the major third on a conventionally tuned guitar is distracting and somewhat dissonant.

Van Halen developed a technique of flattening his B string slightly so that the interval between the open G and B reaches a justly intonated, beatless third. This consonant third was almost unheard of in distorted-guitar rock and allowed Van Halen to use major chords in a way that mixed classic hard rock power with "happy" pop. The effect is pronounced on songs such as "Runnin' With the Devil", "Unchained", and "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?".

With the B string flattened the correct amount, chords in some positions on the guitar have more justly intonated thirds, but in other positions the flat B string creates out-of-tune intervals. As Eddie once remarked to Guitar Player:

A guitar is just theoretically built wrong. Each string is an interval of fourths, and then the B string is off. Theoretically, that's not right. If you tune an open E chord in the first position and it's perfectly in tune, and then you hit a barre chord an octave higher, it's out of tune. The B string is always a ************ to keep in tune all the time! So I have to retune for certain songs. And when I use the Floyd onstage, I have to unclamp it and do it real quick. But with a standard-vibrato guitar, I can tune it while I'm playing.^[26]

Is this just a bunch of BS or is it real? If it's real, how have I never heard of it before? I'm going to mess with this, but honestly I can't imagine how a detuned B string could possible sound good? Any of you tried this before?

My Spider IV 75 Review

I received my new Spider IV 75 amp on Thursday so I have had a few days to check it out as well as compare it to my Spider Jam (which is built on the Spider III base). For reference, I have version 1.01 and I am aware there is already an upgrade available to 1.04, but I don't own one of the new pedals that has the USB port.

First of all, I am very satisfied with the Spider Jam, enough to keep it even though I have the new Spider IV. I thought the tones were pretty good both at room volumes and when cranked. I own an expensive tube amp, and IMO as far as SS technology has come, they still can't mimic the sound and warmth of tubes. With that said, Line 6 has made some pretty amazing products over the years to at least close the gap.

I have an MXR compressor pedal that sits permanently on top of my Spider Jam. The new Spider IV now includes a modeled compressor pedal and it sounds great. Overall, both the clean and distorted tones seem to breathe a bit more than the Spider III. There is a warmth in some of the clean tones that is very pleasing (the jazz preset, Funk 49, and a few others). I think the clean tones are an improvement over Spider III, and the difference is the warmth and dynamics, and having an onboard compressor is the icing on the cake.

What I realized when evaluating the distorted tones, was that it takes some time to get a feel for the amp and all it can do. As a result, I think there will be some players that spend 15 minutes with one in a Guitar Center, and walk a way a little disappointed with the distorted tones. Initially, when comparing it side-by-side with my Spider Jam, the high gain tones of the Spider Jam seemed to have a slight edge over the new Spider IV, or at least the tones were just different. This is where spending time to get to know that amp paid dividends. I was able to tweak up some great high gain tones both with a strat and a humbucker guitar in drop D tuning. The Metal green and Insane green are both awesome (Cliffs of Dover preset is great).

With a strat, I was able to use the Black More preset as a starting point, and I got a killer tone at loud volumes.

The Good:

The bang for the buck with this amp is amazing.
The effects sound great - I have always been disappointed with the effects in the Spider amps and I think they finally got it right.
The effects are in stereo from the headphone/line out jack (Spider III/Jam was mono)
Can get great clean tones as well as medium and high gain tones with both a strat and a humbucker guitar (Ibanez's)
Editing the effects is a huge step forward over the Spider III.
Sounds great at room volumes AND cranked up.
The Spider IV seems louder than the Spider III/Jam - plenty of volume on tap.

The Bad:

I have had one instance of powering up and no sound coming from speaker - recycling power rectified the issue.
I find that there are many artist presets that are just embarassing how bad they sound.
The Class A models sound great but there is a noticeable 2nd tone (like a ghost harmony note) present, especially when playing single notes. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future update because the Class A models (check out Funk 47 preset) are greatness.
Overall, there is very little not to like.

Summary:

Overall, this is really a ridiculous deal. The amp sounds great, has upgraded to better sounding effects, and included even more models. As mentioned the Class A models are killer for clean tones but they need to rectify that overtone/harmony note issue. You may not like all the high gain models, but there are several that can be tweaked for a great sound. The amp has warmth, dynamics, and breathes when cranked. No, it is not a tube amp and can't compare to the greatness of tubes, but for the money, this is a killer amp and will work at home, on stage, and in the studio.

Hey Everyone,

So I had a revelation yesterday ... since I started using impulses almost a year ago, I could never quite figure out why my guitar tones didn't have that high-end bite and the "air" I heard in impulse demos. I would boost between 8-10kHz to add a bit of high end and it still didn't have that sound I wanted. No matter what I did, it would sound too muddy for my taste and lacked "that sound" I was going for.

So I went back and tweaked my tone again (the Chunk Chunk/Big Bottom dual tone) ... messed around with the volume and presence knobs on the POD X3L to get the right amount of mids, turned down the gain a bit, boosted the trebs, and started recording again ... AGAIN, it still sounded like *** imo and just put me off form recording anything for my CD.

I started mixing a song for a band last night and loaded up everything to create their sound. I loaded an instance of Voxengo Boogex as I normally do when I add impulses and I realized something ... this whole time I had high and low pass pre's on in Boogex. I adjusted the sliders and BAM!! The bite and high end was there ... the guitars shined without being peircing!
So I went back and redid my old song "Omega" and decided to post it so you can here my brand spankin new guitar tone and new mix using impulses ... the right way haha.

Unfortunately this means I'm rerecording all the songs I've done so far for the CD and they probably wont all be done before the new year because I'm starting to get everything packed up for my move back to Washington DC in December. As SOON as I get back I'll finish everything up and start setting up an actual roster of musicians for FFaF. I'll also be starting up a side-project with Mark Holcomb from Haunted Shores so get ready for something amazing coming at the beginning of the new year. Maybe we'll get Bulb to play the skin flute for us or something haha.

I'm pretty happy with my SV HD100 as it is except some of the obvious. Lack of control over the effects, mainly. The SV MK2 looks like it's really going to rock though. So I'm really feeling the need to sell my HD100 and start getting my funds to together. From what has been uncovered, prices for the SV MK2 HD look to be $949. Not that I have a problem with that price, there is alot of bonuses thrown in over the origanl SV. Although tack on the MK2 Shortboard, which is going to be a must, and it starts to get up there. Realization set in last night, though. I've always wanted a Mesa Dual Rectifier. I've been seeing them going for $900 to $1,100 used lately. But what I'm really thinking about is a Carvin V3, it's almost like a Mesa Road King, and at $849 how can you go wrong. All tube, 3 channels with 3 gain modes each, smart loops, expandable EQ, MIDI, ect........alot more features. I'm thinking get that and use my X3L for effects and as a MIDI board to switch the channels. Paired with my Avatar 4X12 cab would be a very versitle, formable rig. Any thoughts? Anyone have one, played through one?

I had a x3 live from new in my studio for just over a year with no problems

On The first live gig (it let me down big time) it was changing patches by its self

The tuner wouldn’t work the guitar going off and on; it was like a fruit machine

Flashing randomly all over the place, I had to go direct into the amp

I’ve, always used Roland /boss gear for the last 30 years, never had a problem, and I’ve gigged hard

I hope you’ll stick with me why I have my little rant,

So here we go……………

My friend brought an x3 before me and I used it in the studio, it blew me away the modelling

Was the best I’ve ever heard, I had most of the cabs and pedals that the x3 models and they have got it dead on …

Way ahead of Roland/boss

So I was sold, my studio is kitted out exclusively with line six gear

Then my friend started to have problems with his x3

He took it back as it was still under warranty

It was replaced with a new one

Then the new one started going wrong (changing patches by its self and recalling the wrong patches when he pressed pedals,

So he took it back and they replaced it with a third one, its working ok so far

I have been doing electronics for the last 30 years so I thought it mite be time to open this little bugger up, as it was out of warranty anyway

I WAS SHOCKED (the build quality was terrible)

The screening they use is spray on, as the bottom of the case is plastic /Roland/boss use solid steel case’s, I used my hi power magnifier Lenz to find out to my horror that bits of the screening had flaked off onto the circuit board, it was like tiny bits of gold glitter next to the dsp chips (NOT GOOD) the circuit board was oxidised and soldering, well I’m having a panic attack

So I set to work, cleaned the circuit board, I found lots of dry joints in the process

I re-soldered lots of parts on the board, and then I found my problem

One of the rotary encoders had a dry joint that stuck out like a sore thumb

Well its back together I’ve put it thou its paces kicked it round , its working fine now

No more bloody problems

A lot of people think that software updates is the end-all of modern gear problems

Let me say it all comes down to good old fashioned build quality

After looking into dynacord /ev /roland /boss / equipment for the last thirty years

I think line six should get out of china

It will save there reputation in the long run

As they have the engine of a mercedes benz, with build quality of a Hillman imp

if there was a pod x3 live modelling unit with the internal Construction quality and external build of a roland/boss ….

It would then be the ultimate pedal on the planet

I will go out gigging with my x3 but will always have my Roland VG88 waiting in the wings in stealth mode

as we all know that gear is BULLET PROOF

Someone tell me why I shouldn't pull the trigger on this...

I've had it. I know I have. I'm so sick of being sick and tired and I'm making some changes.

I did a health kick thing before but it eventually fizzled out. I remember feeling really good from eating healthier food and a bit of extra excercise.

I'm really having a crappy health situation right now and it has me scared. I'll spare you the details.

I'm improving my terrible eating habits for starters...I get some excersise but not enough. I've got to change that, too.

So, anyone got any tips...or things that you do from experience that work for you?

Tube amps & power amp saturation??? WITH CLIPS

This is probably way off topic but I think a lot of you guys have a lot of experience with tube amps so I thought Id ask. I’ve heard it said that you must crank a tube amp so the output tubes and transformer are working, even distorting (saturation). Now that I got my studio complete I finally got the opportunity to test this theory and it certainly does sound better as you crank it (to a point) but I think the reasoning is incorrect. I am leaning more towards the Equal Loudness Contour (F.M. Curve) as the reason for this and here’s why, I just cranked up my (Home-Made) 100W JCM-800 with a 4x12 (Vintage 30’s) to full volume and it is ridiculously loud, I mean it is down right dangerous, I was reading 124.3dBC 6 feet away at ear level (and the speakers are at hip level). I don’t have very much experience playing live but I would say that you could never get away with this in a club, I mean it is so loud it is painful.

So my questions to you guys who have more experience are…

Does the F.M. Curve seem like a reasonable reason for this? I mean, I really don’t think the power amp section is distorting until you far exceed safe sound pressure levels.

What on earth is the point of a 100 watt amp when 50 watts can cause hearing damage.

Have you ever played (at least one full song) at full volume with a 100 watt amp? How big was the room and how far away was the amp? Can you still hear?

OK... Just received yet another email from Line 6 advertising the ultimate tone pack for Pods. For 99.95 you get ALL 4 expansion packs!. Well, I bought the three guitar packs originally for that same price. I'm not bitter that they offer all 4 for what I payed for three, but why won't they cut a break on the Bass pack price alone (still lists at 99.95 as a standalone pack). Please drop the Bass pack to 29.95. That would probably suit many users that are in the same boat as I am, and will not pay 99.95 for a single expansion pack. Just venting, here!.... Thanks

I did a sample with a dsl50 a while back......compared a miked example to one just using speaker sim on guitar rig...it seemed also exact i seem to remember......

I played on a guitar rig 3 demo last week and once u really grasp WHAT it is trying to emulate.......i.e. miked amp as appossed to listening to an amp i think it does an amazing effort.

ive also had pods including x3

also i think that many of the digital age dont appreciate how to play a real amp so they play on guitar rig in a different way to this and moan when it comes up short.the thing people expect it too make their playing amazing but it wont work like that.also the better the amp sim the more it will dissapoint most.......you see its like with reference monitors(speakers)the more neutral-boring they sound,the better

I know guitar rig certainly should be good for one reason- there is a crucial relationship between power amp and speaker documented here...a speaker is a reactive load!not passive....this has been built into guitar rig....in guitar rig notes we see......

After about ten years of playing the 2 same guitars w/EMG's loaded in them, I decided to put those guitars away. I've aways had 10 or so guitars but only played those 2. So I got a new band going and thought it was time for a change and a move from active to passive PU's. My new main guitar is going to be my Gibson Gothic V that I bought new 10 years ago and almost never play. I'm not a fan of the 496R and 500T that are in it so I'm going to order a Red Air Norton for the neck and a Red Super Distortion for the bridge. I also want more options. I'm going to put in at least one DPDT on/on/on switch wired for series/coil cut/parallel. I'm going to remove the one of the volume pots and put the switch there or I'm gonna get 2 dual pots. I'm not sure I want to put a hole in the pickguard for 2 switches though. What I was wondering is if I can wire both PU's to the same switch or if I need 2 seperate switches? If I can use only one PU with it, would the neck or the bridge give me a better singlecoil Stratish tone? Thanks

I've been very annoyed at people these days telling me I suck because I use FL-Studio, yet they havnt heard my music.

they tell me "oh, so you just re-arranged premade loops? you suck. get pro-tools. also, get a mac, their pro"

truth:

-mac's arnt pro. they are just a rip off of a BSD Operating system, with a custom GUI that sits on top of the X window system.

-macs cost about double for the same hardware (and I'm doing fine on windows thank you)

-Using Pro-Tools does not make you pro. you can still utterly suck and use pro-tools.

-I never use premade melodic loops. I only use hihat loops and groves for trance songs. organizing melodic loops is quite talentless.

-FL-Studio is NOT a toy. it is a very powerful DAW, and works quite well with line6 hardware.

-I own a copy of pro-tools. It crashes ALL THE TIME. if its such a Pro DAW and everyone uses it, why do they have so many issues with it?

Sorry but I am angry with Line6 and have two issues at this moment:

1) The old forums, with lots of solutions and suggestions, were made invisible or deleted.

2) Development on the Vetta (the Line6 "Flagship") has been halted.

I have asked Line6 where the older postings have gone and received no reply at all. Sorry but I can now only think that the objective of deleting these forums was to take away the public history of malfunctioning equipment. But by doing that a major source of historical information for people that did invest money in Line6 equipment and invested time in the description of problems and/or solutions to them is gone forever! This is definitely not a good move in my opinion. Please make these older discussions available again!

Amongst other Line6 equipment I own a Vetta II and read the following:

Q: Is Vetta 2.5 going to be upgraded?

A: After a painstaking review of the current issues presented in the Vetta II firmware, We have made the difficult decision that we will not be providing any additional updates to the current code. We do not take this decision lightly, and although many Vetta users have not encountered the issues that have been discussed in forums, we are very sorry for those that have been affected. Although this may not be the ideal outcome for some, we do believe there are adequate workarounds for these issues and hope that the many benefits of the Vetta II platform can continue to inspire your music for years to come.

At the bottomline this means that the Vetta-owners are now left with their hardware and a few firmwareversions. They should more or less decide which combination of software and hardware works best for them. I have seen discussions of Vetta-owners re-installing earlier firmwareversions because they did not encounter certain problems in versions 2.11 or earlier. But again, all their sometimes painstakingly exact descriptions and motivations, which must have taken them a long time to establish the faults and after that lots of time describing them as good as possible to help others ....... simply deleted and thereby ignored by Line6.

I hate this move, the best source of historical information, as well as my own contributions to these forums, have simply been deleted.

On top of that, my confidence in the future and upgradability (the unique selling point for which I bought this promising software modelling amplifier in the first place) of my "Flagship" is gone.

I am very curious what others think of this.

I don't know whatever happened to Septemfluous, but I owe him a *huge* thank you for turning me on to the Michael Kelly brand. I bought a jumbo acoustic electric by MK back in the summer and in my search to replace the Ibanez SZ I thought I might try the MK Patriot Custom. Although my favorite color in the family is the amber one:

I ended up getting a "black fade" used on eBay for $270!!!

It showed up today and I can't get over what a high quality instrument this is. Both pups are individually coil-tappable, and bouncing between single and dual coil mode on the front pup alone was great for bright, stratty tones and then dark, smooth jazz-ish tones without any adjustments. Dial in the bridge pup and the thing just shines. The neck pocket is angled to fit your hand perfectly as you slide up the neck. I liked my Ibanez, but I never liked the pickups. That doesn't seem to be a problem for this guitar -- it's got some sort of "PAF Plus" pups and they sound killer.

Here's the MF description:

It starts with an extra deeply carved maple top on a hand-selected mahogany body. The set-in neck is tightly fit to assure maximum sustain and performance.

Installed in this best-in-class body is a set of pickups developed especially for this guitar, built using the same classic all USA Made components as many collectible humbuckers. To give the Custom a high output edge while retaining a deep rich tone requires exacting specifications, including a special overwound technique. Normally, humbuckers are mounted from plastic rings, suspending them apart from the full vibration and tone of the body. These are attached directly to the maple and mahogany body to draw every ounce of sound out. The coil splitting allow you to switch each pickup from a full humbucker tone to a single-coil tone with a simple push-pull pot.

An ebony fingerboard, recessed control knobs, Grover tuners, real abalone block inlays, TonePros locking bridge and an amazing flame maple top complete this amazing package.

Yeah, sure -- there's some sales hyperbole in there, but I was fully prepared to spend the $450 or so it would've taken to buy this new, and I would have thought I'd stolen something.

Seriously, if you're in the market for LP style dual humbucker, this thing should be on your list. Read the revews on Harmony Central and on the MF.com website. Really, forget the price, this guitar feels and sounds as nice as my Fender American Deluxe Strat.

What are the Spider II DH75 default settings? I have the "sample settings" from the HD75 page on the Line 6 site, but it would be very helpful to know where the knobs are pointed for each channel's factory default.

I just bought this amp used. It sounded awesome, but I reset the default settings, thinking the factory defaults would surely sound even better - and apparently the previous owner had a better ear than whoever programmed the default settings!

I have access to a large shed that is not being used, I could empty out the contents (garbage) and possibly look into the cost of sound proffing the large shed. I can get electricty to the shed via an extension cord. (proper outdoor cord, will not be on the ground) The shed is 50 feet away from the back of the house, there is no rear neighbours, the neighbor to the east is at least 400 feet away, neighbor to the west is 200 feet away, and all the closest neighbors right and left of the house are at least 75 feet away.

I know what materials to start with- 3/4 drywall (can use seconds), sound bat insulation and sound absortion panels.

This is why I posted this message. If I go to all this trouble, try to "sound proof" the room. Is it possible to build a soundproff room outside the house that would be able handle a drum set, guitar , bass and vocals past 10 pm and not disturb neighbors?

Pedalboard Project - Final, With Sound Clip

So, it's finally done. I added a TC Nova Modulator and Nova Delay and have no idea what else I could possibly put on there. They basically have all I need in terms of effects. The attached mp3 is just me messing around with one of the Blackstars in a very light British crunch sound in the beginning and then more distorted toward the end, the Mod on Tri Chorus, and an analog delay. I'm running it into a DMC CabTone box set on a closed back emulation and right into Reaper. No post processing. Just what you see on the picture. What do you think? Not bad for direct, I'd say. Through an amp it sounds AMAZING.

Oh, and I got a really nice surprise today from Voodoo Labs tech support when they told me the TC units were able to be powered through my Pedal Power 2+. That saved a lot of headache in trying to find a spot for their wall warts.

Is it just me... but the tone of XT Live is harsh and has that boomy loose tone in the lower notes. I am mainly a Strat user but I have noticed this on my PRS too. and also the tone has some kind of fizz...on most distortions...

One day it will sound good.. and other day it the above issue drives my nuts... I want to love POD but..

Also, I took XTL to stage. send line directly to PA and had them return my guitar back to my floor monitor.. the tone is so thin and the finger noise is really bad, and sound guy complaned of hiss noise at the board.

I have been using POD long time.... mainly for recording.. but I want to play live... yes I know about the Studio Direct and Pre/Post amp in etc.

Every time I try live I bring it back disappointed...

Is X3 any better.??

Variax 300 Jack Problems

First off, let me say that there is no option to post this as a question. I've been searching and searching. Nothing to click, whatsoever.

I have a Variax 300 and the 1/4" jack is... well... jacked up. The sound cuts out quite frequently and I have to unplug/replug multiple times to get it to working again. This happens If I'm using the TRS with the power supply, batteries, and I even plugged the VDI in, then plugged in a standard TS 1/4" and still got the problem. I'd heard somewhere before that there were problems with the 300 jacks.

Is this a known issue? And, if so, is there a way I can get a new Jack? It looks really easy to replace. I just remove the two plugged in cables from the circuit board, loosen the nut, and go in reverse for the new jack. It took me two hours and multiple punch-ins to record one song yesterday because the jack kept failing.

Any of you good ear types willing to give feedback on decidedly non-guitar project?

OK so my metal whammy bar song wasn't very good.

I guess you could say I was using my newfound newby status to see what I could get away with.

To be honest - I don't really play any particular style of music - but mix blues, rock, classical-like, etc. and play whatever I feel like at the time as I improvise over a keyboard and drum track that I throw together.

I haven't copied anyones licks for many years.

Since I re-started the guitar 3 years ago when I got the Toneport and a guitar - I pretty much just experiment and the last guitar was a bit hard to play - so I'm not very fast.

I can't shred - and I don't really listen to metal unless it's on T.V.

But I heard some music about 2 years ago and it blew me away and I knew I needed a whammy bar.

The last post was a joke. It was agonizing holding the right-handed backwards whammy bar like holding a hammer which covered the strings - then trying to move it out of the way so I could pick a note while pressing it down at the same time.

It was almost impossible but I recorded it anyway because it was so hilarious.

Anyway - this is part of the song that blew me away and what I want to learn over the next year or so when I get up to speed. It's really short and small and not a trick.

Simulating a Leslie with the original POD

Hi, years ago, I used to play through a couple of Leslie speakers. I currently own one of the original PODs with a floor board. The rotary sound on it is actually not too bad but it is awkward to have to step on the TAP switch twice to get it to speed up. Is there a way to set it so that I only have to click on the switch once to get it to speed up? Perhaps two presets side by side? Anyone?

Hi there, I'm looking for some "guidance" when connecting my pod to the amp. I don't know if it should be plugged straight into the front of the combo (with the pod output set to front/combo), or should it go in the effects loop (dunno what settings to use ?). Or... should it go straight into the effects return, bypassing the randall pre-amp altogether?

I would appreciate anyone sharing their setup as well as the pod/amp settings.

Uncensored-Like advice on a gig setup

We have just finished recording our debut album, called Into the Fray. It's pretty much already made it through mixing and mastering. We were hired to play for an hour set at a private birthday party last night for this guys daughter. He had seen us at an earlier gig and booked us. So, this mix of high school kids (18-25 crowd) plus some adults, were dancing to DJ supplied music all night and we come on at 11. We do our thing and we start packing up. Well, this 16 yr old kid with long hair gets up on stage and starts asking me stuff.

"Wow, is that a new Line 6 amp? I've never seen one like that!" If you look at my profile, mine is all silver....

"Hey, can I play your ESP?" Normally, I don't do that, but he seemed really sincere.

"Can you play any Pantera?" That's when I noticed his R.I.P. Dimebag shirt, cool kid.

"Here, check this out!" So, he starts off on Cemetary Gates, goes to Cowboys, etc.

Then, some guy comes up to the stage and starts calling this kid. The kid is playing pretty loud, almost gig level and he keeps going. After several tries, I'm guessin now, it's his father who keeps trying to get this kids attention. This kid is gone! So, I approach the guy and tell him it's cool. The father just glares at me with a look like I'm trying to convert his son into a working musician look. Picture that father on School of Rock, for the guitar player kid. Jerk! So, the guy finally yells, "Zack, if you don't stop right now!" Yeah, his name was Zack, lol! So, Zack, stops looks at me, rolls his eyes, and says "I gotta go, but man that sounds awesome! What kind of amp is that again?"

I said, "Spider Valve"....

He says," Man, I gotta get one! I'll see ya later, good show!"

"Later Zack, keep rockin..."

I already know that this kid is gonna drive his family crazy! LOL! He was so into Pantera and knew a lot of the licks. I can just imagine his dads face when he brings home an SV HD100 half stack!!

Mixing is horrid, because Riffworks is really bad for doing a proper mix. I need FL-Studio or Pro-Tools to do a good mix.

I was looking at a recent lesson mag that had some classic rock licks and stories and decided to re-learn some of the ZZ Top licks I had not played in twenty-fiveplus years. In doing so I realized what timeless licks these were. Nothing really complex, just great rythum and standard scales, blues turnarounds, two string harmonies, and soul. I thought how lucky I have been to have been a teenager when most of these songs were brand new. I'm not just talking about ZZ Top, but, all the great bands and players of classic rock. It seemed like every day someone had a new cut that was brilliant. We have some very talented artists today, maybe too many, thus it's harder to be original and still appeal to many people. But, back then, before the classifications of metal, heavy metal, pop rock, and even punk, most of the peolpe I new liked a wide variety of artists from many genres. Everyone associates certain songs with events in their lives. I am just glad I had some of thebest ones to associate with the events of my life. I can't imagine growing up associating these events with something like a rap tune. What were some of the artists that you guys really liked when you were teenagers?

I have been a Guitar Port subscriber for a few years, initially triggered by buying the AX2-212 shorlty after it came on the market. This last year I had still been paying monthly but didn't use the GP and now that I'm starting up again the GP does not talk to the USB, and the light does not even show, so I think the GP is FUBAR. Tried updating the drivers to no avail. This led me to search for a replacement and was shocked to learn that my old $50 GP is now sold for $100 for a GP XP. This led me to look at the Tone Port products and the Pod Studio products. It has taken me quite a while to figure out the differences, including the Gearbox and Pod Farm stuff. I am not able to find a product map or timeline on Line 6 web pages anywhere, so am pretty much just groping around. Still not clear if Guitar Port Online gives the same stuff as the Gearbox or Pod Farm. My present conundrum is wanting to run the hardware stand-alone without having to connect to the internet. I was never able to do this with the GP, but it seems like the TP or Pod Studio allows this, as long as your USB is connected to the hardware at least. Is there a trick for GP stand alone?

I am learning it is very easy to buy a discontinued or outdated product, not realizing the updates that have been make. You can still by Tone Ports and Gearbox and not realize that for 30% more, you should be buying the Pod Studio and Pod Farm newest stuff. The numbers on the hardware is the same--very confusing, so you really have to look closely at the color and actual name. The Tone Port and Pod Studio hardware (e.g. UX2) seems to be identical except for color, but the Gearbox software migrated to Pod Farm. I wish Line 6 would make it easier for us dummies to navigate the product roadmap and upgrades so we don't make a dumb purchase. Seems like I had to invest a lot of time and internet searches to get my head partly screwed on, but I still have a ways to go. Can anyone clue me in where one could find some "how to use and configure and wire up" the various line 6 products so you can be sure about what will work with what?

Best mic for recording an acoustic guitar?

I'm talking about recording an old fashion acoustic guitar with no pickups; straight into a mic. I've heard that it's best to use two mics; one aimed at the 12 fret and one aimed at the soundboard. So...are we talking about 2 of the same kind of mics, or two different kinds? I've tried everything imaginable using the only halfway decent mic that I current have now (an AKG Perception 200). This mic has been pretty good for recording vocals, but when I try to use it to record my 6 string, the results are always the same...It sounds like pure crap!! And no, it's not because of my guitar playing either, LOL! Or at least not 100% to blame.

I really don't know what the heck I'm doing wrong. I've tried all kinds of stuff. I even resorted to using a VSTi acoustic guitar a couple of times (gasp!). But it always sounded too artificial to me. And it's so freakin' ironic too. I'm actually better skilled on the acoustic guitarist these days than I am the electric. But I eventually just give up and use my electric guitar with a clean setting, because I can't get the hang of micing an acoustic guitar properly (or I'm using the wrong microphone or something).

What's depressing about this whole thing is that I'm probably eventually going to find out that the only way to really solve my problem is by plopping down $500 to $700 (or even more) for a decent mic. Again ironic, because here I'm one of those guys that truly believes tone is mostly "all in the hands." But....capturing that tone properly via recording is, unfortunately, not "all in the hands."

So, you guys got any suggestions which hopefully won't cost me $500 to $700? Any expert advise that I can get will be most highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I have a PODxt Pro and I find that all the high gain amp models generate a lot of unwanted noise. I have never played on a good tube amp, so I don't really have a good term for comparison. Sometimes I assume that it's normal, but I'm not really sure if I'm supposed to rely this much on the noise gate or if there's something wrong with my POD unit, guitar electronics or cable. I just recorded some (really sloppy) samples with the MS Criminal amp model without a noise gate so that you guys can hear it. The third sample is a lot louder than the first two, so please be careful not to have the volume on max when you listen to that one.

I'm a newbie with head/cabinet amps, I just bought Line6 Spider Valve HD100 (not the mkII) overseas and couldn't manage to buy the cabinet due to its size.

Unfortunately line6 cabinet isn't available on my country.

I have some questions on this:

I'm just wondering which cabinet settings (watt size, ohms) that would fit this head so it won't blow up either the head or the cabinet speaker.

What will happen if the cabinet watt is lower / larger than the head watt?

Things have changed a little since I lurked here in the past?

I have the opportunity to buy either a BOSS GT-10B, practically brand new, or a POD X3 Pro, also mint, but without any floorboard etc... the GT is $400 and the X3 Pro is $500. I now that both are outstanding units, with a lot of differences, but I was just wondering about the X3's live capabilities vs. the BOSS... I do have access to a shortboard, but not all the time. I am primarily a bass player but also fill in on electric guitar and acoustic once in a while. I've used bass rigs for both electric and acoustic guitar in the past and have no problem doing that, since it's usually just to fill in...

Any input on the pro's and con's of either unit?

Price is not the issue, I have enough saved up for the X3, but would I be better off with the GT-10B, despite that?

I'd like to open a discussion on this, if anyone would like to join in...

I've had some serious health issues the past month...and due to a minor problem w/ my POD X3..I lost all my custom tones...and my ears just are not hearing the same way when it comes to creating then again..I hope that goes away soon...anyway...

If anyone has the three main tones that Eric Johnson uses...Clean, Mid Crunch and Lead...or close...please give me a shout...

I've been working on them and I'm coming up short....

I am trying to emulate the exact delay effect that the Edge (from U2) use's on the live version of the song "Bad". There are a few individuals [primarly on youtube] that have shared some great insight into settings - however; they are using AXE FX... so I am a bit confused on how to translate their input into what I can do with the M13.

Here are the setting suggestions:

432 ms [this i know what to do adjust - simple]

dotted eigth note [bit confused - because i thought you can only select either this or an actual ms setting]??

2.311 hz [I have NO clue what to do with this]???

Anybody with some input/tips would be greatly apprecaited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am an idiot with this stuff - so please break it down!!

I like to think there's a lot of life left in my POD, seeing how the much talked about Axe FX is just totally out of my price range right now. But I'm still largely very happy with the recordings I get from it so it all works out okay

This recording is an Ibanez RG2228 through the X3, and I'm using Drumkit From Hell Superior....version 1! I own 2, but until I have the Metal Foundry SDX it just isn't suitable for my needs.

Hello all

Here I am making this question again.. I had it answered on the old forum earlier this year and the solution worked like a charm, but well..

First off, the Monkey bussiness insists my POD is NOT registered, even though the L6 web page where it redirects me shows me the registration. :S

But the real problem comes each time the POD drivers become updated.

The installer shows a program called DPInst.exe (Driver Package installer) allocated on Documents and Settings > User > Local configuration > Temp > .tmp folder, freezing over, no matter what.

I remember someone posted a manual solution, but alas, that information is gone.

Any help much appreciated

I really, really, really want a good acoustic/electric guitar to do some gigs with where I can just plug and go. I've got an old Dean Markley magnetic soundhole pickup which I hate (and a regular acoustic).

Can I get what I want for under $400?

I am considering:

New equipment (there are a few that are in this range that are well reviewed -- a Seagull and a Washburn)

Used equipment (I found a Takamine on Craigslist for $375 that I'm not in love with having played it)

Aftermarket acoustic pickup to put in current not bad but not totally in love with acoustic guitar.

So when you're done debating the existence of a larger diety, X3 USB dropouts, the pros and cons of the new forums, etc., can you give me your experience in this arena, if any?

most of the working day yesterday (here in the UK) I couldn't get onto this forum. it started working around the end of the day (sometime around 4pm maybe) so I guess someone at line6 got to work, and realised there was a problem. the main website wasn't affected. during that downtime, there was an error displayed, and I've seen it a few times since this new forum has been in place...

a short while ago it happened again, and it happened as I clicked post reply to a topic. so I checked back 30 mins later and the forum was up again... but the topic was no where to be found!!!! it was about a Floor POD, and the user was asking how to enable the WAH (push down hard with your toe was to be my answer).

but that begs a question... what's happening when the forum goes down, and why has that topic gone??

please see the attached error from a short while ago. I think it was the same error I've seen before, but I can't be 100% sure if the wording is exactly the same.

I'm trying to play a cover of Paramore - CrushCrushCrush and I'm trying to get the delay sounding right for the part that's played during both verses (the clean guitar part) but I'm struggling.

Can anyone offer any suggestions to how I could do this? Aparently the guitarist uses a Boss DD20 but I'm not sure that's what's being used for the studio recording, as his live sound for that sound is different. Anyway I do have a DD20 as well as my X3L but I would prefer to get this tone from the POD.

We're doing preliminary recordings of some tunes. These are 2 practice sessions with vocals added afterward. We've just gotten the drums recorded for almost all the tunes and are going to start recording instruments next week.

This is a completely modern recording, btw. XTL, 2.0 and Roland V drums into a CD player.

No actual amps were used in this recording. Bass was direct, through a Grunge pedal, vocals recorded to Mac and processed afterward, then mixed with the stereo band track.

I would be suprised if this hasn't come up before. Why doesn't L6 develop an amp for use with it's modeling equipment? I have tried amp after amp and I don't care what the fine print says, my xt live just doesn't sound true through any standard amp. I am currently relegated to finding an atomic reactor (back ordered until christ comes back, apparently) or a tech 21.

come on L6, help a brother out. develop an amp to use with your modeling pedal boards. the internet is consumed with folks looking for this kind of product and due to a lack of inventory, it's a cage match to get a good deal. You'd be hitting a market larger than L6 as this "amp" (i realize it's not really an amp but you folks know what I mean) would be coveted by a great many modeling enthusists who prefer the pedal or rack mounted equipment AND who are getting tired of headphones.

Forum feature request - ignore/block user

Is it possible to have the ability to add users to an ignore list?

I believe this would be a very useful feature to automatically hide any posts by users that we can select.

There are times when offering help to a user that they can become rude, I would like to have the ability to automatically hide all future posts from that user. It would also be good to be able to block PMs from rude users as well.

Could we please have this "ignore/block user" feature included in the forum?

What say others? Would this be something others would like on the forum?

Hey guys! I figured I would let you know what is going on with our band. I have made alot of friends on this forum and hope to make some more! Kaleo is a five piece Christian Rock group based in Fairview WV. We play alot of gigs each year ranging from worship sets to full out rock concerts and even some acoustic sets thrown in. Part of the group has been together thirteen years and I joined about six years ago. The lyrics in this song are actually a poem a friend of mine wrote for his wife a few years ago. My challenge was to fit it to melody while keeping it as original as possible. As it turns out I didn't change a single syllable. His wife typically listens to bluesy type rock so I wanted to write in that genre while keeping with the original feel of the poem. The arrangement is not typical but I think it fits the poem. I just threw down a scratch vocal as it will be later replaced with my friend's vocal. He has never sang before so it should be an exciting challenge. Once complete he will present the recording to his wife as a birthday gift....

I just started a country band gig as lead guitarist and we rehearse at the singers house, nice room. They had a few amps and guitars laying around and the bassplayer who is my buddy told me I didn't have to bring an amp they have a Line6 amp there. Cool! So, I grabbed my strat and headed out. I've seen tons of these but never thought twice about plugging into one. I know that spaceatl had one as his main amp for a while and now I see why! It's so easy to get tones on this thing and it sounds great! They guy had a shortboard with it and the drummer asked if I knew how to use it. I said dude, this is a cakewalk compared to a PODX3! I got three really good tones in a matter of minutes and they were like wow! This is the amp that Line6 should have put valves in, not the Spider. Maybe they still will? I'm getting G.A.S. again, it never stops....

POD XT live base sound (kind like stompboxes)

Hi everybody!

I'm studying abroad and I can't bring my pod xt live with me, but in the mean, and just to play at home, I bought a TonePort GX. This time without the XT, and with the limitations that the GX have (such as don't be able to change patches) has make me reconsider the modelers that works with patches.

Actually, I'm working in a clean base tone, without many effects, just a simple base tone, which I want to keep as a start for my other tones. The problem I found is that if I get a nice tone that works fine and add distortions or overdrives (just that by now, keeping delay and modulation as same) I just have to copy the clean some times, and add, say, the Pi, or Rat, or Face.

Now, What happen if I want to change just a little the base tone? I have to change it in at least three patches, to keep the same clean setting. I know that keeping a patch that is totally clean allow me to change to it when I "turn off" the effects, but, what If want to change it in ALL the tones? With stompboxes, I just change the setting of one stomp, and turn on and off the dist stomps. Now, imagine that you have 9 or 10 patches with the same base sound that want to modify......

This is why I'm seriously thinking about keeping my xt or change it for an M13 (I know, I know, different beasts, blah, blah... but I have an old POD 2.0 that I can use for the amps). With the TonePort, I have to keep everything as simple as I can, as I only can turn on and off stomps (in an easy way) via midi, not change patches (i.e. not return to a "clean" independent patch after a dirty one). I was wondering if there is a way to "link" the sounds, and if I change something in one, that something get changed in two or three (or ten) more patches. I know the answer should be "NO" but... Does anybody have an idea how to deal with this (It is almost the last chance of my beloved XT)

X3 Live and bass tones

Maybe I'm a total idiot...I love mt x3 live, it gets great guitar tones, love all the amps, effects etc... but when I plug my bass into it and try to use the bass amps etc... they all sound the same! Everything sounds like it's got a major amount of fuzz face distortion. No matter what I turn off or on it never changes. Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

LINE 6 UX2 - recording into Ableton Live on a mac....

I've a UX2 which I use to record all my songs into Ableton Live. Is there a way of NOT having to go through Gearbox to record? The bass tones I get sound awful! Vocals and guitar are fine, but the bass sucks. Any ideas if it's possible? I used ot have the M Audio Fast Track Pro, and I could go straight into Live with that...

Rather than post this on your thread I put it here. I went through a wet vocal period. (poor choice of words?) Everything from this period sounds the same. Here is an example. Warning!! F-bomb alert!! Really bad song alert!!! The Roland VS workstation was my first digital rig and it had a rock vocal patch on the effect card and I used it on EVERYTHING! I hated the sound of my voice. Still do.

Acoustic Pickup? (soundhole pickup)

I have a TonePort DI with Gearbox software. I recently tried recording my acoustic guitar using an old acoustic pickup that I've had lying around for years. The result was less than stellar, the main problem being that the signal coming from the pickup wasn't strong enough. I had to tweak the heck out of the software to boost it which caused a pretty nasty hiss.

So, I have 2 questions - 1) is it likely a problem with the pickup? and 2) if so, do you have any recommendations for a new one? I'm looking to spend, oh, no more than $100. I'm thinking an active pickup would be best since I assume that's going to have a hotter signal but I don't know that from experience.

Any advice would be great.

Hey first time post here. I've had my XTL for almost a year now and, after owning a bunch of pedals, an old RP7 and a Digitech RP500, I've fallen in love with my XTL.

Only thing is, you MUST spend some time with her in order to get the right tone and feel.

The thing that I mostly look for on mine is how I connect it to the sound reinforcement system. Meaning, am I using it with my amp, the PA or a power amp and cabinets.

Most often, I've actually been using mine in stereo on stage. Left output goes to the effects return on my Peavey Triumph PAG 60 (all tube 6L6 power stage, bypassing the preamp). Right output goes to the front of my 25 year old, newly restored Peavey Bandit 65 into the clean channel with the EQ at 12:00. However, I'm wondering if a stereo power amp and two matching cabs might do better.

I bought a POD X3 Live some time ago and I am using it at the moment more to practice at home. I was using an Ibanez 10 watt amplifier as my "speaker" to the POD when I don't want to use the headphones. To achieve this I had the distortion on the amplifier set to 0 and basically using the amp as a sound output. However a few days ago this amplifier broke.

When I bought the POD I was more of a bedroom player but now I may be considering jamming / practicing with friends and maybe a drummer. Eventually we can take this to the next level: gigging. One of my main concerns with practicing with friends is carrying my gear around... it's not very practical to carry the POD live and an amplifier behind me, so for practicing I would probably just like to use an amp. And if I ever go gigging, then I will take the POD and connect it to the amp (or maybe directly to a mixer, I don't know).

So what are my options here ? I wouldn't like to pay for a Line 6 Spider amp or something if I'm getting pretty much the same emulations as in the POD, when for now I'll still play 90% of my time at home (and so I would be using the amp just as an output system). Should I just spend cash on say.. a Roland micro Cube or something that's cheap and can give me a more or less acceptable tone for practicing with friends ? I don't think though that the micro cube can play alongside live drums though.. but I have no real practice on this. So I would have to spend some more money on a louder amp.. anything that's not solid state is bound to cost more than 200$ which is a bit ahead of the budget I want to spend on this..

Should I just buy a loud 50w solid state modelling amp ? Like the Spider III ?

I reckon I could buy some active sound monitor but these are not around for less than 200$ and in this case if I wanna jam with my friends I still need to take the Pod AND the sound monitors with me... I'm a bit lost in here, what do you guys recommend ?

Basically I want to: when practing with friends, to carry just my guitar and a loud amp (but still having some cool effects / tone) but if I ever go gigging I'll take everything with me. What's the typical guitar rig configurations in this case ?

New Mix: I bought me a lovely pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro monitoring headphones and man it makes a world of difference. I've been working for about three weeks trying to get a new sounding mix and it's definitely my best by far (not to toot my own horn, but damn it sounds nice!). Instead of using one instance of DKFHS for the kick and another instance of Superior Drummer 2.0 for everything else, I opted for just SD 2.0 and sat for many hours creating a pretty kick *** sounding kit that sounds pretty damn realistic! I'm not joking when I say I'm really proud of this mix! Before you ask, I'm still using the same guitar and bass tones I've always used on my POD X3 Live, just mixed a hell of a lot bette. I'm using my POD X3L with the Big Bottom amp model for the guitar and bass. If you have any questions, free to ask!

New Guitar: Drumroll please ........................................ I finally made an amazing purchase and have joined the dark side! I bought me an apparently Limited Edition Schecter C-8 Hellraiser eight-string from Drumcity and my god this thing is a BEAST!! I'm completely in love with these EMG 808's and really put them to work on this new song I'm workin on (go listen!). You better believe much, MUCH more will come out of this axe!!

Newbie question regarding Pod X3 and Guitar Port

Or do I just need Riffworks and record through the USB connection?

PODxt recording delay in Windows

There's a recording delay using my PODxt when I record in Reaper 4.

I had the same issue with my Mac and Logic 8, and the issue was fixed with a driver update. No such thing exists for the PC.

What can I do BESIDES manually measuring the sample delay which is impossible due to the way the PODxt works?

SM 57 Off Axis

I like Lincoln Brewsters tones but I couldn't get them downloaded from his website. I did find a site that had his settings documented so I copied those settings. I said to use the SM 57 on axis for the 4 x 12 Greenback 25's cab. I've been using those settings at church for quite awhile and they have always sounded very midrangy to me. Last night I watched our church service on TV and my guitar sounded like somebody put a blanket over the speakers. This morning at practice I tried using the 57 off axis and it just really opened up the tone. So much brighter was it that I had to roll back the presence. In my mind I thought that having a mic directly pointed at the speaker cone would be brighter than having it pointed away from the center but that is not what happened. Do I not know what "off axis" means here? Has anyone else discovered this with the SM 57 mic settings? By the way, I use the POD X3 Live direct to the board and a Stratocaster. Thanks!

I just put in a EH 12AX7 in the V1 preamp of my SV HD100. It sounds ok on the clean channel, put the amp got a high pitch squealling type feedback with the distortion channel. Plus the tone has less definition. Also looking at the tube, it's not really glowing. Do you think I got a bad tube. The amp is quieter though with this tube in over all. I get alittle bit of static in it when I'm not playing , clean or not when I switch off of standbye. Any thoughts?

Killing in the name solo effect

How's things guys

I really need some help, i've started with a band who want to play rage against the machines "killing in the name of" , i have the main guitar sound down but the solo effect is killing me. I'm using a Pod X3 Live and i've tried using the bender effect in the stomp box list but no matter what way i mess with the settings i just can't get the same type of effect that tom uses in this song, mine just sounds messy and not moving between the right pitches. I tried downloading patches that people put up here but they don't sound right, So i was wondering if anybody up here has managed to get the sound using their x3 live would they mind giving me the settings. I don't want to drop this song from the set but i don't want to play it if the solo effect doesn't sound right. I really hope someone up here can help me.

I meant what I said. The fact that somebody had the forethought and the abilty to copy (because that is what they do..sheesh!) the sound of an amplifier is ingenious! And Line 6 probably had to discuss the possible legal repercussions that may be involved before they proceeded. Grant it, Line 6 had the technology and the know-how to do the copying but without something to copy Line 6 would not exist. And they copy very well which is also why they exist.

Which is why we shouldn't forget the years of development and artist input that made all those great amps Line 6 copies. There is no doubt there are musicians out there and I'm sure many of them here that have commented on my posts who have never played through some really nice tube amps.

What you get from Line 6 is probably the best there is to offer from a modeling stand point but they give you the best they can. They can't give you every characteristic an amplifier has to offer. Like they did when they first came out with the Mesa Boogie Mark IIc tones. Personally I've owned Mesa/ Boogie amps since the 70's, since the first Mark I. It was the most killer lead amp on the market and every guitarist I met wanted to jam through it. I had a Mark IIc (best I ever owned) in the early 80's and personally I was a bit disappointed by the tone Line 6 offered. I have a Flextone II and I never play that model.

On the flip side, I also owned a Marshall JCM 800 100watt half stack in the early 80's and I only wish that it sounded as good as the Line 6 copy. The only plus about the original is it had way more punch when you slammed chords. Unless you experience the real amp you would never know it and take for granted that Line 6 has copied it perfectly.

Same with the Variax. If you never played all the actual guitars the Variax has to offer you take for granted this is what these guitars sound like. But when the Variax was first introduced it got alot of criticism from guitar players that actually owned or played the guitars it has to offer. I've never played most of the guitars in the Variax and for me it's just a bunch of different tones. And because of my ignorance on the selected models I could really care less. I like this and I don't like that, etc., etc.

Same for guitarists who never played through the original amps. Who cares, right? I like this tone and I like that tone but I don't like this one, etc., etc.

And whether you like the statement or not, Line 6 is nothing more than a really good copy band. Maybe more like a tribute band. They play Deep Purple songs and sound like Deep Purple on the record. But you really get to hear the personality of Deep Purple when they play live. And Line 6 can't give you everything. If Deep Purple never existed they could never tribute them. (Listen to Highway Star off the studio album Machine Head and then listen to it live on Made in Japan - That's where I'm coming from...)

It looks like the MKii will be here soon. Musician's Friend is selling the SV 112 for $400 now, the HD100 for $450, and I'm sure the 212 will follow suit soon. They're also all marked as clearance items. The SV MKii is going to be a great amp, I'm sure. However, it's hard to pass up the current SV's at those prices.

I have just got a Stagg EDB34 upright electric bass (which is fantastic) to run with my existing rig:

Logic 9

PodFarm (with guitarport)

NI Battery3 (with DTXplorer)

Tascam US428 (with a mind of its own)

It's not advanced, but it works great.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has played around with PodFarm and a bass of this kind, or indeed just with a standard Double Bass mic'd up, and has any suggestions on a good rig setup? I have the Bass and FX Junkie packs installed.

Hi...I've been trying to figure out how to use the tone direct feature in cubase. I have failed in getting rid of the latency. Is it possible within Cubase or should I be looking for another software or interface. I'm really dissapointed because this is why I bought this interface in the first place and I expected it to work with one of the foremost and most used softwares in the market.

'Best of Both Worlds' tone setting

Hi all,

I am looking to see how you get the tone settings for Hannah Montana's (Mylie Cyrus) intro for the 'Best of Both Worlds' song. I also believe 'Shania Twain' has this unique guitar sound in one of her songs as well, but don't remember which one right now.

I think part of the unique sound might be a Wah pedal at around the halfway point, but I can't nail it. Anyone here have an idea? I'll attach a short loop of the intro here as well so you can hear it.... that will loop 3 times for convience.
