Hi. I have a Variax 500 and a Pod X3 Live. I bought the Variax used. The model selector knob doesn't seem to work properly. When I bought the guitar, the first two knob settings (Custom1 and T-model) both pointed to the Custom1 bank. From there everything was shifted--the knob, set on Spank pointed to the T-model settings and sounds, Lester pointed to Spank, Special pointed to Lester.... This is what I was seeing with workbench and it was confirmed by the sounds that the guitar was producing. So since everything was shifted, the Custom2 knob setting pointed to Reso and the Custom2 sounds were not reachable with the guitar. I shifted things around in Workbench so that everything now points to what its supposed to, EXCEPT the Custom1 and T-model knob settngs still point to a single model bank (now T-model) so I only have one set of custom settings (Custom2) to work with. This sounds like it might be a hardware problem with the switch(?). Or have you heard of a problem like this before? Thanks, --Alan
sounds like you need to reflash the firmware then recalibrate the knob. if you look under the support section there should be a faq telling how to do this.
Are you saying instead of 12 indents (where the knob stops on each model as you turn it), you only have 11? It sounds like you should pull the knob off and make sure the position indicator is located correctly on the pot (it's keyed, so it only fits in one place) and that the nut that holds it on is tight. Be sure and put the knob back on with the pot turned all the way (one way or the other) and the "custom 1" (or 2) is lined up with that indicator.
No, I have 12 indents. It's just that the first two both select the same model group (according to workbench). I think I'm going to try the recalibration procedure suggested in the first reply. Thanks for your help.
if that doesnt do it try contact cleaner on that pot. it wonr hurt anything but you could have some build up on the contacts.
+1 on the contact cleaner.
sometimes the easiest way is the best

I tried a few of the things that were suggested (contact cleaner, reflash) and still have the problem. I tried the recalibration, BUT, I do not yet own an external powersupply/footswitch. So I tried to follow the recalibration procedure but by powering on and off with the batteries (i.e., pushing a standard 1/4" jack into the guitar to power-up; pulling it out to power down). This didn't work--I didn't hear the beep sequence that the procedure said I would when the guitar initializes. So I ordered a power supply/footswitch from Sweetwater and will try the re-calibration again when I receive that. Does anyone know where the beep sequence that I am supposed to hear comes from? Do I have to connect the guitar to an amp so I can hear the beeps through the amp? And when the procedure says "Pull model selector to 'up' position (set to Custom 1)" does that mean to pull the selector knob out in addition to setting it to Custom1?
Thanks all for following along. I promise to report back when I get the powersupply/footswitch and retry recalibration, and will close when I finally fix the problem. Meanwhile I still have the problem that the first two notches on the model group selector knob (CUSTOM1 and T-MODEL) both point to T-MODEL and the knob is starting to act a little flaky--periodically I'll switch to a setting on CUSTOM2 (Open E tuning) and it doesn't get it right at first. I'll have to switch the knob back and forth a couple of times before the guitar actually switches.
i dont think you should do anymore till you get your power supply. reflash or recalibrating should not be done under battery power. also either use an amp or headphones to hear the beep. if reflaashing or recalibrating doesnt cure the problem and you have already tried the contact cleaner then either it something wrong with the switch or the board and youll have to send it in for repair.
