I bought my Variax when they were introduced so perhaps there are issues associated with new products. It had more noise than I liked and the Strat settings seemed a bit muddy. Perhaps this has changed on the newer products. I've never had these things checked as I was seldom home.
The current problem is this. I've tried various ways to check. I've tried both ac and dc to power and still no sound. This happened suddenly. Also, I want to state the case fell apart despite spending most of its time in the closet. When I tried to take it to a gig the zipper broke on both sides!.

will it run on batteries. if so there could be a problem with either the xps box or the trs cable. or its plug in the guitar
Perhaps it was not clear what I meant by using ac and dc current. To be clear, I have tested the guitar with and without the box. I have used two new sets of batteries. The cable is fine and is active.
The guitar hasn't taken any shocks and has been used too infrequently. I did notice that some of the sounds didn't track well - attack and decay were not natural.
sometimes when electronic stuff just sits you can get a buildup of (for lack of a better word) crap on the boards. possibly causing a short.since the zipper on the case fell apart and you have had it sitting in a closit at a guess its either moisture or something in there. id suggest opening it up and spraying the boards pots anything electronic with contact cleaner . then blow the residual stuff out with compressed air or dustoff. let it get dry then try it out again. ive had corrosion on pots give me problems a little thing like a cat hair short out a board remove the hair or clean the pot and back to normal. i got a bunch of effect pedals my sister in law left in the basement. dampness shotred them all was this green stuff on the contacts. cleaned them of they all work fine. it cant hurt to try it and might solve the problem. ever see a moldy wall with all those little black dots. that happens to electronic boards as well. my brother brought a computer that wouldnt run back to life with contact cleaner.. the board had blue mold on it from being exposed to too much dampness.
The guitar has no sound at all. It had worked hours before it stopped. It is not a pot problem. It is electrical. Perhaps the board got fried but I cannot even generate an electrical hum with it. Before it died, I found that a one string run had diminished attack in at least one mode though I didn't try it in every mode. Perhaps one thing follows the other.
As for the case, I'm complaining because it literally fell apart without wear.
yeah id be iritated with that myself. on the other thing what have you got to loose at this point. specially if its out of warrantee. the only other option would be take it to the nearest line 6 service center.
btw i just mentioned cleaning pot as an example.
