When the M13 came out I didn't pay much attention because I already own an X3L, and I only use it for direct recording or playing into a PA at church. I don't even own an amp, so getting something like the M13 seemed like a waste. I also viewed the M13 as an X3 without amp modeling, so it would seem redundant to buy one.
A couple days ago I stumbled on to some YouTube vids with the M13 and I was very impressed. The M13 does some things that the X3 cannot. The looper function is very cool, the effects seem to sound better than the X3, and the ability to get those shimmery/stacked delay/U2ish sounds is very cool. I noticed that a lot of the guys posting vids of the M13 were also Axe-Fx owners - so there must be some things that the M13 can do more easily than the Axe-Fx.
I am not really a fan of U2, but those shimmery delay sounds would be useful for recording my own stuff or using them in a praise band situation. I wish I could get those with the X3. I know you can fake it - but I have never heard anyone get an X3 to really nail that sound the way the M13 can.
So I have a problem - I love the sounds of the M13, but I need the amp and cabinet models of the X3. I suppose I could buy an M13 and run it into my X3, but it would be cumbersome to lug around 2 pedalboards everywhere. This got me to thinking - if Line 6 would combine the looper, improved effects, and ability to stack multiple delays and effects any way you want (M13) with the amp and cabinet models of the X3 (along with the ability to tweak the cabinet and mics a little more like Fractal) then they would really have something.
If they packaged this as a rackmount with a matching foot controller (like Digitech does with the GSP1101) that would be amazing. I bet L6 could build this and price it competetively ($999?) and I bet the number of people switching to Fractal would slow way down. Sure - the high school kids that can barely scrape $300-400 together will not be able to afford it, but most amateur/home recording/casual players that I know would be willing to pay $1000 for the product I am describing.
What do you guys think? I think L6 could do it........but will they?
I'm guessing that what you're describing is probably what the X4 (or whatever the next generation of L6 product is called) will look like. They'll use the fx from the M13, the amp/cab modeling from the X3, and they'll probably have 6 or 7 "slots" that can have any fx/amp/cab assigned to each slot. That's my guess, at least. And yes, it'd definitely pull some sales away from the Axe-Fx.
To me, the hard question is form factor for the floorboard version - I know you want a rack version, and my guess is that L6 will eventually build something like what you're talking about, but L6's bread and butter in amp modeling has been all in one units. The M13 is already pretty darn big, and if you need to add more buttons, I just don't know that L6 can make something much bigger than the M13 and still have it be viewed as desirable by consumers.
Interesting to see where it will all go, though.
Cheers,
Fester2k
It doesn't have to be a rackmount necessarily, but like you said....the M13 is already pretty big, so combining the two into one floor unit would be a challenge.
Sadly - the X3 is only 2 years old, so I don't see L6 coming out with anything to replace it for at least another 2 years....or longer........
I use a Atomic Reactor with a Podxt (and three model packs (no bass pack) and a Vox Tonelab (desk top model) it has a effects loop and that can open up some sonic possibilities. I bought a E-H 2880 Super Looper and foot conroller and that is a great tool, add in a E-H Stero Memory Man with Hazari
and wow, I (hope) to afford a E-H Cathedral Reverb as its one of the finest reverb units I have heard (IMO) I throw in a Boss Slicer at time too or a Roger Linn Adrennalin III (was a II but updated it with the two chip kit and faceplate (well worth it , it really sounds better) I looked at the M13 and also Line 6's looper but it had redundant features (to me) I wanted a looper (though the E-H Stereo Memory Man with Hazari has a looper function, I guess I went from
individual pedals and a Vox amp (still have those) to the Atomic and the Podxt or Vox Tone lab and then felt something was missing so added a few individual pedals and the looper (I agree that the M13 and X3 may be a cool combo but the M13 is effects from the modulation, filter, distortion and delay
units + Verbazilla and the X3 is chock full of effects (though the dual rig is cool) no real righ answer, user preferance I guess. The Fractal Audio gear
is astonishing for sure, hope they make some (mid priced models ) or I save for a long time, I did E-H gear as its never a single effect its a twist and a turn plus the effect, I use a Line 6 Variax 500 and Workbench as well (when time allows) ![]()
best and Happy Holidays
