Re: Pod XT Live / Variax 500 / Variax Workbench problems

A basic solution is a re-build of the Java source code of 'Variax Workbench' that uses the Java development environment for Snow Leopard by the developer of Line6.

Another one is a check the driver of USB-interface for Snow Leopard compatibility.

This should seek advice to Apple.

I would like the staff of line6 to report on these progress regularly.

What should Line6 does when not succeeding even if a certain period passes?

I think that making to open source about this codes of 'Variax Workbench' and USB-interface driver will show fair and the honesty to the user.

Re: Pod XT Live / Variax 500 / Variax Workbench problems

I removed Snow Leopard from my Mac as it's not only Workbench that isn't supported.... I run Propellerheads Record/Reason 4 and Cubase 5 none of these have officialy supported SLeopard.... I'm happy to wait for official support then I'll reinstall SLeopard......

Re: Pod XT Live / Variax 500 / Variax Workbench problems

Maybe I found the solution ! !

The reason that Variax Workbench does not launch is for the lack of J2SE 5.0 in Snow Leopard.

We should add J2SE 5.0 on Snow Leopard as follows.

1) You should download the Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5 from

URL: http://support.apple.com/downloads/Java_for_Mac_OS_X_10_5_Update_5.

2) You should copy JavaForMacOSX10.5Update5.pkg from mounted dmg into your (user's) home directory by Finder.

3) You should execute the following CUI commands in Terminal.app.

$ mkdir j2se5
$ cd j2se5
$ xar -xf ../JavaForMacOSX10.5Update5.pkg
$ mv JavaForMacOSX10.5Update5.pkg/Payload Payload.pax.gz
$ gunzip Payload.pax.gz
$ pax -rvf Payload.pax

4) Next, you should execute the following CUI commands in Terminal.app.

$ cd ./System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/
$ sudo mv 1.5.0 /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/J2SE5
$ cd /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/
$ sudo chown -R root:wheel J2SE5
$ sudo rm 1.5.0
$ sudo ln -s J2SE5 1.5.0
$ sudo rm 1.5
$ sudo ln -s J2SE5 1.5
$ sudo rm CurrentJDK
$ sudo ln -s J2SE5 CurrentJDK

5) Launch Java Preferences.app in your Utility folder.

6) Finally, Check J2SE 32-bit and 64-bit added,

and you should set the priority of J2SE 5.0 32-bit to top in the Java application list (in General panel) of Java Preferences.app.

I succeeded in launching Variax Workbench on Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard.

Of course, it works perfect.

And, you may sure to be able also to do it. Try it on your own risk.

Re: Pod XT Live / Variax 500 / Variax Workbench problems

Ooo-err popy. Too scary for me I'm sorry to say and I would worry about what other Java reliant apps it might screw up.

But I have to add that I am SO disappointed in Line 6's sloth. I have finally acquired an XT live to go with my Variax 500 as I had a genuine need & desire to use Workbench to configure set-ups and most importantly alternative tunings. Sorry to mention this Line6 but these things are barely possible through the LCD keyhole on the Pod. I WANT TO USE WORKBENCH!

But, as others have pointed out, I have a new imac which only runs 10.6, so 'dropping back' to an earlier version is not an option and again I'm sorry Line6, but you can't expect users to run their entire computer usage patterns around the sorry state of your software.

Again, as others have pointed out, this is now many months overdue. Apple are already on 10.6.2. And they, like you, are a combined hardware/software company.

Okay. I thank you for your honest position on compatibility and the special Public Beta Group, but can you please give us a timeline for operational software before our heads explode, or we head over to eBay in disgust.

Re: Pod XT Live / Variax 500 / Variax Workbench problems

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I didn't encounter an error, I was just too intimidated by the idea of scripting at all 'at my own risk' in Terminal, and also worried about what items might start not working elsewhere if I messed around with Java.

I'd be delighted to hear if any others tried your solution and found it worked. Hey, maybe someone from Line6 could use your solution to help implement a proper update for all of us.

Rgds.

Thank you for the reply.

OK, I consented to what you wanted to say.

I also hope for the offer of an easy method for the beginner in the additional installation method of the Java of an old version.

My best regards.

It might be significant for everybody who loves Line6

that you reported your success here.

Good luck

Did what? Popy's Java fix of Nov 14?

Yes, popy's fix. It worked flawlessly. It probably helps that I have an understanding of Java frameworks and development in general, as well as UNIX filesystems, symlinks and so forth, but his steps are spot-on and harmless. They won't remove anything from your machine, just install an older version of the JDK and repoint symbolic links (think, folder shortcuts in Windows). It's gold.

Re: Pod XT Live / Variax 500 / Variax Workbench problems

Okay. Can I ask a couple of cautious questions?

1.  'Put .dmg file into users home folder'

Does that mean just at the top level alongside the 'Applications' 'Desktop' etc. directories?

And why not at the HD top level if I want all users accounts to be able to use Workbench?

2. Do you have to do the CUI script line by line, and hit 'return' to do line breaks?

i.e. I assume you can't copy and paste the whole list of CUI commands.

3. There's a break between sets 3 and 4 of the CUI commands.

Is there any reason for this, or do you just carry on?

Knowing nothing about CUI, you can forgive my nervousness, I hope!

Re: Pod XT Live / Variax 500 / Variax Workbench problems

Hi,

1.  'Put .dmg file into users home folder'

Does that mean just at the top level alongside the 'Applications' 'Desktop' etc. directories?

These command lines assume the situation that you put .dmg file in your home folder in the "User" folder in your HD top level.

And why not at the HD top level if I want all users accounts to be able to use Workbench?

You will be able to set old JDK to top priority by Java Preferences.app in any users accounts as I wrote above.

Then you will be able to use the Workbench.

2. Do you have to do the CUI script line by line, and hit 'return' to do line breaks?

i.e. I assume you can't copy and paste the whole list of CUI commands.

Yes, you can "Copy and Paste" the CUI script line by line, and hit 'Return' key to execute at each line.

You must input your admin's login password at first 'sudo' command line.

3. There's a break between sets 3 and 4 of the CUI commands.

Is there any reason for this, or do you just carry on?

You don't have to mind a break between step 3 and step 4 of CUI commands.

(Step 3 is for unarchiving and copying the older version of the JDK, and step 4 is for repointing the symbolic links.)

After you've done all these steps, you can trash JavaForMacOSX10.5Update5.pkg and generated j2se5 folder in your home folder.

Best Regards.

Re: Pod XT Live / Variax 500 / Variax Workbench problems

It's useful to note that popy's steps remove NOTHING from your system, they simply install an older version of Java and set it as your preferred version. This can be changed back EASILY with the Java Preferences utility.

Re: Pod XT Live / Variax 500 / Variax Workbench problems

Hey. I'm a computer programmer now!

That's fantastic guys. I have now managed to launch Workbench for the very first time. Many, many thanks for your solution and support.

You must input your admin's login password at first 'sudo' command line.

And for those who, like me, have never been here before: when the CLI asks for a password, you type it, but you don't see anything, not even asterisks. Go ahead and type anyway and hit return. Have faith. It works.
