MIDI playback on Sonar 8PE/Toneport UX1/Win Vista x64

How do I set up my Toneport UX-1 in Cakewalk Sonar 8 PE? I installed the UX-1 with the latest PODFarm before installing the DAW and I changed the driver in CW to ASIO. When I tried to play a MIDI track, there was silence and I assume that is because the Toneport doesn't have soundfonts? The UX-1 is the only option listed in CW as a soundcard. How do I set it up to play MIDI tracks (maybe through the UX-1 via the built-in soundcard)? It plays MIDI wonderfully through GuitarPro 5, so there must be a way! Can anyone point me to (or write me) a proper soundcard/UX-1 setup for Sonar 8?

I'm using 64-bit Vista Home Premium on a Dell Studio 17 laptop. Audio drivers are IDT High Definition Audio Codec and Intel High Definition Audio HDMI. Please help!

If you want to play MIDI through your UX1, you'll have to connect a MIDI sound module to the MIDI out on the UX1. But hardware sound modules are really expensive, so you might be better off using a software module with Sonar and just leaving the UX1 out of the loop. Sonar comes bundled with several VSTi's. But I've never used them, so I don't know if they're any good.

In any case, this is really a Sonar question, so you might have more luck asking for help on their forum.

Wait, I take that back. The UX1 doesn't support MIDI at all. So you'll either have to use a VSTi for MIDI playback or get a separate MIDI interface.

abducted94,

mimungr is correct. MIDI is not audio and does not make a sound unless the MIDI information is triggering other sounds or samples that you assign to the MIDI. You will need to go over Sonar's documentation for further information on using MIDI to trigger sounds.
