What is Custom Tone?

For several years now, we've been making products whose tonal flexibility lets you create and save your own custom sounds. We've provided the free Line 6 Edit editing software for many of our amps and PODs, plus an online library of thousands of Tones for them. We are now working to bring together all the flexibility of our hardware products and the software tools that we provide for them under the banner of Custom Tone. Here on the Custom Tone site, you'll find the public beta version of our Line 6 Edit software for editing and assembling your own personal tone library, plus our library of thousands of Tones professionally programmed by Line 6 or created by Line 6 users like you. We welcome you to take them for a spin, then stay tuned in the months ahead as we refine and expand the system to continue bringing you a constantly expanding world of tonal possibilities. Best of all, the Line 6 Edit software and access to the Custom Tone Online Library are provided FREE for your use!

What is Line 6 Edit?

The latest Line 6 Edit public beta, version 3.0 is a free software application from Line 6 that provides editor/librarian features for PODxt, PODxt Live, PODxt Pro, Bass PODxt, Bass PODxt Live, Bass PODxt Pro, Vetta II, HD 147, Flextone III and POD 2.0. (The discontinued Flextone II and POD Pro are also supported by the latest Line 6 Edit version). You can use Line 6 Edit to edit your Line 6 device’s Tones on your computer screen, where it’s easy to see all your settings. You can also save all your customized and downloaded Tones, and even create complete backups from your Line 6 device and restore them at any time. Run the Line 6 Monkey software to get the latest Line 6 Edit version , and to make sure you have all the latest updates for your gear!

What is the Custom Tone Online Library?

To fuel GuitarPort Online, Line 6 makes a unique investment by professionally programming thousands of Tones matched to the signature sounds of some of the greatest guitarists, bands, songs and gear of all time. With Custom Tone and Line 6 Edit, we make that same library of professional Tones available to users of Vetta II, Flextone and HD 147 amplifiers and PODxt, POD 2.0 and Bass PODxt. These Tones all appear as Line 6 Crafted Tones on the Online Library pages of the Custom Tone site. The Online Library also includes a Public Tone Exchange where you can submit your own Tones and grab Tones created by Line 6 users around the world. To maximize the compatibility with all the latest Tones available in the Online Library, make sure to get the new Line 6 Edit 3.0 version!

How does it work?

Line 6 Edit talks to your Line 6 hardware using MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) messages. PODxt family products can connect to your computer using a standard USB cable. For other products, you can connect using MIDI cables connected between a third party MIDI interface your Line 6 hardware and computer, as described in your Line 6 Pilot's Handbook. (You can download electronic versions of Pilot's Handbooks here.)

Which products must connect via MIDI?

Vetta II, HD147, Flextone II & III, POD 2.0 and POD Pro users will need a MIDI interface and cables to use Line 6 Edit as well as Custom Tone.

Which products can connect via USB?

If you've got a PODxt, PODxt Live, PODxt Pro, Bass PODxt, Bass PODxt Live or Bass PODxt Pro, we recommend connecting via USB cable. You can also use a MIDI interface and cables as described in your Pilot's Handbook. (You can download electronic versions of Pilot's Handbooks here.)

Can I get all the Tones at once?

You can download all the Tones from the Public Tone Exchange, sorted by product, in this ZIP file. Once downloaded, unzip the file, navigate to the location of the unzipped file using the left list of Line 6 Edit's Tone Locker window, and you'll be able to open any of the Tones that are compatible with your Line 6 device. This file is updated regularly, for the tone junkie who just can never get enough...

What about the old ToneTransfer for POD 2.0 and original Bass POD?

The older generation ToneTransfer applications that supported POD 2.0 and Bass POD are no longer online. POD 2.0 users can instead use thelatest Line 6 Edit software and Custom Tone. Bass POD has been discontinued, and is no longer supported by an online library or tone editing tools for Line 6.

Will Line 6 Edit translate Tones between products?

It sure will! The Line 6 Edit software translates Tones between selected products. With it, Vetta II, HD147 and Flextone III can all load sounds originally made for PODxt, GuitarPort or GearBox (with model substitutions made as needed). Translations for Tones between other supported products are also provided – the Custom Tone site allows you to list all available Tones that are compatible with your Line 6 device. Some Tone translations and substitutions will not necessarily give you the EXACT sound intended, but they get you started with a similar effect setup and amp/cab choice.

Can I use Line 6 Edit with a Line 6 TonePort?

TonePort UX1 and UX2 devices come with their own GearBox software, which provides a full set of Tone editing features. Line 6 Edit does not support TonePort devices. However, you can open your GearBox-saved Tones within Line 6 Edit 3.0, and even submit them to the Custom Tone Online Library directly from within the Line 6 Edit software. Tone translations and substitutions will be applied when using Tones between TonePort and other Line 6 devices, and in some cases, certain Tones may not be compatible.

Is Line 6 Edit for Mac or a Windows PC?

It runs on both! For a Windows PC, Line 6 Edit 3.0 requires Windows XP or 2000 (but not ME or 98), and Internet Explorer ver. 6 or later as your browser. For a Mac, Line 6 Edit 3.0 requires OS X 10.3.9 or later and Safari as your browser.

Line 6 Edit versions 2.03 and 2.05 run on Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP (but not 98 Gold and earlier) and Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later. However, you should only use one of these earlier Line 6 Edit versions if your computer does not meet the requirements for Line 6 Edit version 3.0.

What about Mac OS9?

Line 6 Edit is NOT OS 9 compatible, because Line 6 Edit relies on Java software which Apple does not support on OS 9.

Can I keep using GuitarPort for editing instead?

For PODxt and GuitarPort hardware, the GuitarPort software provides all the same Tone editing power as Line 6 Edit, and a whole lot more. The library of Line 6 Tones available from Custom Tone are the same Tones available from the Tone library at GuitarPort Online, so you can get the same editing ability and access to Line 6-crafted Tones with your GuitarPort software. You can open Tone files from GuitarPort version 2.0 or later using Line 6 Edit.

How about Variax and Variax Workbench?

The Line 6 Variax Workbench software or its saved Workbench files are not supported on the Custom Tone Online Library. However, it is possible to connect your Variax guitar or Variax bass into your PODxt/Bass PODxt, edit and store your Variax and POD settings together in your saved Tones, and recall them together later.
