Plug the line outs into a stereo amp then plug your phones into that and see how it sounds. The headphone out on the POD sucks. You'll be chasing your tail... That said I like Shure SRH440's . If you have a CMoy mint tin amp that can help the POD headphone out sound "better" but the best is just to forget about it.

Wasn't too keen on the reverb before it. I changed the patch and used a bit less gain and treble on on the screamer and a switchable chorus before it, kept the eq on all the time with reverb at the end of the chain. Left the amp as is... Put a 20ms mod delay in one of the splits mix at ~75%, thickens it up maybe a bit out of Ratt territory but I liked it. I'm using a Basswood Strat with a L500R in the bridge and L45 neck, It's a pretty bright Strat.

Live with IEM's, xlr out's to board. Live and Loud I use a 2x12 with fullrange Fane drivers a power amp and 1/3 octave eq, studio direct. Fane, Emi, and Beyma all make a fullrange 12. I've heard the Beyma's are the flatest.

Don't use the headphone out on the HD. It sucks, line 6 dropped the ball on this one. The old Pod 2.0 sounded much better. Just use the line outs into a headphone amp or good stereo amp and plug your cans in to that. It's like night and day. I've tried quite a few cans through the HD headphone out, it's almost useless...

Also there is a popular noise reduction technique that says to select input 2 to Variax to lower your noise floor. It works BUT I've found it can mess with your

distortion sound. It almost sounds like the difference between 16bit and 24 bit sampling. The treble gets harsh and hard on some amp models. Set input 2 to same and live with the little bit of extra noise. It sounds so much better esp through cans. The SM57 can be harsh too, try a ribbon mic and turn up your treble on the amp.

Re: Pod HD500 with with amp/cab or loudspeaker????

I've never had good luck with anything that has a crossover + tweeter or horn playing live with a modeler. My setup is pod hd500 rack 31 band eq power amp and one or two cabs 2x12. The speakers are Fane 12-150LT's. They are full range single drivers. Beyma makes a nicer driver 12ga50 but in the US they are expensive. I also found the dual patches didn't really transfer well live in mono, so I just use a single amp/cab in the pod. The Treadplate stock the way it's called up sounds good to me for heavy stuff and the Hiway does clean and med gain with the tube driver well. I didn't like the sm57's loud, live. I use the condensors or the ribbon. Also I don't use any reverb live, if I want some space it's either delays or the er on the mike sim. I play in a cover band. We cover a lot of ground from roots rock to 90's grunge... I wouldn't tweek any patches too much with headphones either.. Things sound different loud , Flecther Munson curve ....
