I agree, these updates are helpful (especially the fuller midi implementation), and I'm glad to see that Line 6 is working on improving the HD. Unfortunately even though chaining 2 HDs would solve the DSP issue there are still too many shortcomings for how I want to use it... for one, the ability to control the same effect with more than one footswitch. And as meambobbo said, nothing was done regarding any of the other things that I didn't like. Oh well...

It also seems that some new challenges would come up if using two units: keeping volumes balanced between both is one. And having two devices, you have to make sure all your patches and control assignments are kept in sync. If any of the presets on the slave device get moved to new locations (like if you happened to insert or reorder a preset and all the ones after that get moved down) you have to make sure the master is updated to point to the correct new locations.

What I can't believe is why they designed it this way in the first place. It's great to have 2 inputs for guitar and vocals or whatever. But why do you need to have both inputs active in order to use both paths? They can't simply split a mono signal that comes in from input 1 to go thru both sides of the signal chain?

I guess you could do that, using the HD as your MIDI controller. Actually, it's cheaper than the MFC that Fractal sells. I haven't looked at the MIDI capabilities of either to really tell which would be more usable.

I like your idea of using the L6 Link to chain HD units. If we could do that, I'd seriously consider getting a 500/Pro setup or maybe 2 Pros. Or if they implement full MIDI control in the HD series...

I was thinking about using the same 500/Pro setup but one of the sticking points was that as I understand it, you don't have full midi control over the HD Pro if you use the 500 as the controller... so you can't just have the 500 tell the Pro to turn on an effect or two, it has to be patch change only. Someone please correct me if I misunderstood how this works. I also looked at some other combinations, like the 500 with the Eleven Rack, which still could be an option for me. You'd get the extra amps that the 11R has (MkII, Soldano, Matchless, some Avid custom amps), plus it looks like the 11R can accept full midi control. But the drawback is having to maintain patches on both units, keep them in sync, etc. (that's also the case with the 500/Pro).

I can't imagine why anyone would pair an HD with an Axe-Fx, because the Axe already does everything you would want. Unfortunately, it costs just a little bit more ;-)

No doubt ;-) And in fact, the HD/11R pairing is something I'm considering. Not sure how the midi implementation would work but it could be a good solution. I could look at it like having all the HD amps plus Mark II, Soldano, Matchless, and bass amps; or like having the 11R plus the wider array of fx that the HD has. Maybe there's a way to get them to breed and create an offspring w/ the best of both ;-)

That'd be great if you could completely control the 2nd one via midi from the first one... I considered getting an HD500 and a Pro rather than 2 500's for this purpose. Maybe someday if they implement full midi control.

Since the grill will still be on the cab, the best I can get would be right up against the grill. I guess I'd try maybe right about the edge of the donut hole...

Thanks for your reply Neal. I do know about your method and tried it but there are two problems for me...

One is, I prefer to use FS 5-8 for effects instead of presets.

Second is, I would lose reverb and delay trails because it reloads the patch.

And third that I just thought of would be, what if I wanted to go back to a configuration that wasn't the original? In the example I gave your idea would work. But in other songs I want to go back to the bridge of a song that isn't the same as the original (beginning) sound.

Regardless, hopefully this will help some other people on here.

ps. You made some very good points in your other email about power supply, cheap construction, etc. Although I don't know that Line 6 is listening to that many pros. To me, professionals would be the *most* concerned about reliability, whether they tour or are studio musicians, they have to have products that work, all the time. I see it the other way around -- Line 6 is mostly selling to "average Joes" so they think they can just get away with cutting corners. And from their viewpoint, it works, because they sell lots of units.
