Yeah it is even like that with VOX , Roland, BOSS, ZOOM.... you have the learning curve with every "effects processor" on the market.. and none of them are ever plug and play....every one of them require learning the system and tweaking patches, unless your just using individual stomp box models and no amp models. but if you purchased and Effects processor for just the stomp box effects on it...MHO.. you'd be better off with individual stomp boxes on a board..Heck of a lot simpler.....

I guess another good point about the HD500 is the balance XLR outputs to go to the soundboard.. at Home I go straight into my half stack using the 1/4 output cable.. but at Church I go straight from the XLR to the PA system, I have found that going through the DI box dimminishes the signal somewhat.. while the XLR out gives full signal..

If you run into PA.. here is another hint I discovered..not to long ago.. crank your master volume all the way up and let the sound guy dial you back down on the PA... you get much better sound and performance from the HD500 , instead of just letting the sound guy turn ou on to a level and your at half on your master volume, and for quick settings .. I alway set the sound level to my clean channel, set the volume for your clean sound , and develop your patches with moderate boosts for distorted, and lead gains.. I actually run a 3 stage boost now.. I have Clean, then Clean with a little grit, Then crunch, then lead boost.. For the lower distortion levels I like the RAT distortion model turned down to around 23 and lower on the gain.. it gives a nice low gain sound.. Then on the lead channel I'll back the RAT up with a tube screamer and boost the tube screamer, my basic setup for a patch right now is ...

FS1= clean with a little slap or bite

FS2= moderate distortion with a small boost

FS3 = lead channel boost with high gain

FS4 = delay

FS5 = reverb with some chorus

EXP1 = Volume pedal

EXP2 = WAH

I just like to keep things the same so I don't even have to think when I'm playing.. I know if I need delay it is FS4,, If I need lead it is FS3.. and so on... keep things simple and setup so your not stomping around looking for a pedal...............;)

I have found that tweaking comes with ownership. And it seems that the HD500 is no different from the XT Live in terms of needing tweaking. It literally took me over 6 months to get two sounds I now use most of the time. I had to learn how to set my amplifier's tone controls to get a decent sound out of it while still getting a decent sound from the DI box into the sound system. It takes a lot of work, but the results are worth it. The only 'shortcuts' are the patches you can download, and even then you have to tweak them until you are happy with them..

There is tweaking involve in all patches..Some of it very little,, some of it major.. All I know for sure is , the more time you devote to learning the system.. the easier and easier it gets...

Also a devotion to sound setting on amplifiers and effects because all of the "models" on the system.. are just as they are named they are models of effects or amplifiers.. if you know how to set one , where to set it in the chain...you'll have no problems..the HD500 is just like having a room full of equipment to play with literally... you have to play with it to learn it..

these sites should help you on your quest starting with the amp..

http://www.tonesettings.com/

http://guitar.about.com/od/guitaristsgear/Guitarist_Tones_Settings.htm

http://www.guitarsongs.info/Amplifier_settings.htm

There are helpful tutorials on YouTube,, and on this site.. But in the end it takes allot of homework.. And Allot of Q&A to get adept to working with the HD500 system..But that is the same situation you would be in with any effects processor, From my personal experience the Line 6 family has the best support on the web for their product bar none...I have owned several of the competitors like Boss, Roland, VOX, Zoom.............. the Line 6 user interface, support and ease of programming beats all others hands down..

I agree with StokesGA it is a pain to get started with. I just got a HD500 and have been working with it ALOT to get tones.

My $.02 is don't use the onboard interface to program patches. While you can it's a major pain. I only use it to tweak something here or there as needed.

The HD500 editor is incredible. Also go to customtone.com and get patches that other people have written use these are starters.

Lastly go to youtube search for "hd500 tip trick" theres a guy named Glenn Delaune who has put up some great videos on the HD series of pods. You can alos go to his perdonal website www.glenndelaune.com and download some patches for the HD500 he wrote that are killer.

All in all it's a great unit but becasue it is soooooo incredibly powerful there is quite the learning curve to be able to use it it's full potential.

"with great power comes great responsibility"

I've tried to help myself and spent a LOT of time TRYING to find things, but I can't get anywhere. All I can do is turn knob #1 to find a sound; I can't even use a footswitch yet! I wish there was a , right on the support page, place for people who know nothing to click on.

To begin, I would like to assign a few preset sounds to footswitches. Example: 1A Son of Plexi to footswitch #3.
