In the POD HD500 Edit software, the asterisk will show up in the POD HD500 LCD screen every time a preset is selected in the editor window, let alone when a preset is modified.  This is expected behavior and does not indicate a problem with the POD.  When the POD HD500 is NOT CONNECTED to the POD HD500 Edit software, the asterisk only shows up in the screen when the current preset is modified.
