Mic amp with UX1 + SM57

Hi,
I have a POD Studio UX1 and a Shure SM57 for recording my guitar amp.
I tried recording at very low volume levels (like: midnight and everybody is sleeping).
For this I either had to set the Mic Gain almost fully open (9) or choosing the +18dB option in POD Farm.
Either way, doing one of both, or even just record and boost the signal in Audacity, results in hiss over the complete recording.
Now my question is, is this expected? I didn't knew a certain volume level was a requirement for recording a guitar [confused].
Maybe someone could verify this by turning the mic volume to full and recording for a few seconds?
Is this UX1 specific? Or is this just normal?
If this is expected, what is the maximum recommended setting the mic gain should be set at?
Most people say "you have to set your amp as loud as possible", but I rather not try to find the limit to where my neighbor starts complaining and just use the minimum recommended amp level (should be equal to the maximum recommended preamp gain) as a starting point.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
PS: I think I'm using a cable of reasonably quality: Sommers Cable 'The Stage' with Neutrik jacks (XLR to XLR).
PSS: If it matters, I use Snow Leopard, but I don't think this has anything to do with it.
Kind regards,
Jimmy
Yes, this is expected as the sound level is very low and the mic gain is high. If you need to do low level recording you may want to just go directly into the UX1 and use the POD Farm software for lower noise level on your tracking.
I am using a ux1 with a Shure SM57 and I can't get any sound. The user manual say's to make sure the "source select" drop down menu is set to mic1. I can't seem to find this option... The manual reads that this option is located in the upper left hand corner of "gear-box", or the middle of the pod farm application window, to the right of the mute button. I have no ideo what "gear box" is. Am I missing software from the ux1 package I ordered? Also the pod farm application does not have any kind of drop down menu, nor a mute button. Is this because I am running windows xp? What's the score here..?
I have exactly the same problem... how the hell do you get the SM57 / SM 58 to be recognised by the ux1 mic input??? cant seem to find an option to change source input anywhere in pod farm 2... please someone help!!!
I have exactly the same problem too !!
Please, how you solved it?
thx so much
Change the input source from the Mixer page in PF2.
