What Line 6 pedal to use for Bass X3 or Bass Pod

HI
See attached a post, thought it would be easier to start a thread than add it to the document.
David, A bandmate of mine just bought a Variax guitar, and it blew my mind. I play bass, and ran home to find out if there were a Variax Bass. Very sad to see they're discontinued, but I'm sure I can find one on Ebay or Craigs. My big question is, which live POD should I buy for it? I could go with the Pod X3 Live, or the regular BassPod Xt Live. Looks like there are pros and cons, from what people are saying in the forums. Are the features that were lost in the BassPod Xt Live worth investing in older tech, or should I just go with the newer Pod? We play classic rock covers mostly, some country rock when the crowd demands it. I can't seem to find a real clear answer as to whether the Variax Bass works flawlessly with the X3 Live. I bought a multi-instrument modeling box a while ago, and find it a bit of a chore to find bass-specific sounds. But the idea of picking up a Variax Guitar down the road and being able to use it with the X3 is appealing. Grr, I can't make up my mind, bet a bass-specific setup that is specifically designed for Bass, or get the X3 solution where Variax Bass may not be fully supported. Anything clues you can provide would be much appreciated. Regards. Todd HI Todd All these things come down to personal taste and what you need, but Im happy to share what I did and why. I like you tried to weigh up the pros and cons of whether to use the Bass Pod XT or the X3 Live. I also play in a covers band so versatility is the key for me it can be AC/DC one minute Stevie Wonder the next. Which is why I went for the Variax from using the Tobias for rock to the Synth bass for Nutbush City Limits, having a Variax Bass I believe is the way to go. They do appear to have reliability issues if you watch the threads and string volume has been a little up and down and the piezos appear to die rather too frequently, so there can be a down side. So to negate this I use my GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and bought a 5 string and a 4 string so I will have a back up. Touch wood I have only had the string volume issues and you can alter those through configuration. I found mine on Ebay and found a guitar shop that still have a new 705 so you are right if you want a Variax Bass you can find them. This is why I added the survey to this group to let Line 6 know there is still a demand out there (hopefully). The Bass Pod and the X3 Live have the same amps and cabs, and there are some known issues with the X3 Live around footswitches crapping out and the USB connection dropping out and being Made in China some have reliability issues. The Bass Pod offers a Biamping feature and with the X3 Live you get Dual Tones. If you do decided to buy the X3 Live I have seen some posts on that forum that say after a certain serial number a lot of those problems are resolved. I can't confirm whether that is right or not> I went for the X3 Live, the the main reasons were Dual Tone you can pull some amazing sounds with this but you have to put the work in. The outputs on the pedal I use are line signal out in stereo direct to the front of house using the XLR outputs on the X3 (these aren't on the Bass Pod) and then use my amp set flat just as a stage monitor so I can control the stage volume I have a Fender 80 Watt transistor amp using the other outputs for the stage sound (You can't do this on the Bass Pod and all in Stereo). It has a USB 2.0 and SPDIF connection for digital recording and I get all the guitar tones and effects for free some are useful others not. Personally I have found this works great and I am really happy with my live sound through the front of house, (while both of them do it) being able to trigger a different guitar in the Variax means you get the whole tone with one click of the foot switch. So I gig about 4 to 5 times a month from outdoor parties to pubs and clubs and have used my Variax 705 and X3 Live for the last 6 months trouble free. Also you get a great DI with the Variax Bass so if the X3 ever does crap itself self I would still be able to DI and keep going. So there you go my two bobs worth on that but I am sure there will be Bass Pod XT users that will have a different story. David
Thanks for such a quick replay David. I've got a barrage of questions, I hope you don't mind. It's great having input from someone who uses the devices I'm considering purchasing.
So the X3 has all the same interplay functions with the Variax Bass? You can change all the settings with a single switch, like you can with the Bass Pod? Is there anything lacking in the handshake between the two devices?
There's been some discussion on the forums about the X3 not having the same modeling as the Bass Pod, specifically issues with a lot of the bass tones & cabs not having a full low range (being geared more towards the higher pitched guitar strings). Is that true?
Someone at Line-6 has commented a few times that all of the cabs & effects that come with the BassPod are also in the X3, but users have commented that is not true.
I've only ever played 4 string bass, is the 5th string on the 705 lower than the E string, or higher than the G string?
Do you know of any way to set Drop-D tuning to a switch on the Variax Bass? My friends Guitar has that feature, and it's one of the features I most long for. I hate tuning back and forth between E & D during a show... I especially hate when we start up a song and I've forgotten to change tuning, that's just embarrassing. I'm so easily distracted.
I don't have a great understanding of the features you mentioned lost from the BassPod to the X3. You mention bi-amping, which I'm assuming means just mixing two different amp sounds at varying percentages, right? And you mention duo-tones on the X3. What's the difference? Does duo-tones mean you can mix multiple effects, but not multiple simulated amps? Or by "tones" do you mean you can have two completely different setups mixed (a cab with an effect on one channel, a different cab and different effect on another).
So many question! I wish a BassPod user were on this forum and could pitch in his 2 cents.
I like the idea of stereo out, but not if the low-end tones are compromised. A lot of effects require stereo output to work properly.
Anyway, if you have time, please go through each question and let me know what you think. If I'm ever in your town, I'll have to buy you a burger or something to say thanks.
Cheers,
Todd
HI Todd
I'll do my best see my answers under your questions in bold. But what you should do is head down to a shop and try it for yourself tone is a very personal thing.

No, nothing lacking it all works I set up in Gearbox (the editor for the X3) the Variax model the all the tone settings in the guitar and these are stored with the patch in the X3 Live

My understanding is that it has exactly the same amp and cab models and the X3 has a higher bit rate, so in theory should be better. I have found the bass amps and cabs have plenty of bottom end, try the Sub Dub and you will see what I am talking about.
Someone at Line-6 has commented a few times that all of the cabs & effects that come with the BassPod are also in the X3, but users have commented that is not true.
I have all 28 amps and 22 cabs in mine so it is the same
I've only ever played 4 string bass, is the 5th string on the 705 lower than the E string, or higher than the G string?
You can do either I have a low B on mine, this is also the lowest the Tuner will go on the X3 Live, this would help with your drop tuning problem which is why I got it.
Do you know of any way to set Drop-D tuning to a switch on the Variax Bass? My friends Guitar has that feature, and it's one of the features I most long for. Unfortunately they did not provide the Variax Workbench for the Variax Bass this is nothing to do with what pedal you use, it is a Variax application and as the bass is discontinued I would not hold my breath for it. This is the application that lets guitarists program alternate tunings. So if you want that get a 5 string or a Hipshot and fit it for the drop D on a four string.

Biamping is a crossover where your direct different frequencies to different cabs in my metal days I used a Perreaux Mosfet into a Yamaha preamp with a crossover and drove the high end through a Laney 4 x 10 and the bottoms through to JBL 15s. But you are right in your assumption with dual tone on the X3 Live you can have two amps and two cabs blended for one sound, takes a bit of finessing but sounds great. I use the dual tones to simulate biamping.

Sorry can't help with this one as I chose the X3 Live and I sure don't regret it ![]()
I like the idea of stereo out, but not if the low-end tones are compromised. A lot of effects require stereo output to work properly.
I have not detected any compromise in the bottom end with the X3 Live and having a stereo chorus ping pong in the front of house is fun ![]()

I'm in Australia so thanks will have to do.

David,
Well, I finally managed to find a Variax Bass for a good price. I picked up the black & pearl.
Santa treated me great this year!
It's seriously brand new, not a scratch on it. However, there is a noticeable "click" in the volume knob when I turn the volume down. It happens about 20% down from full volume, and only when turning the volume down, not up.
It's kind of obvnoxious actually. I often will just turn the volume down if we're doing an all-vocal piece, or if one of the guys is doing a solo. But it's a really loud SCRATCH sound, and I wouldn't want to do it on stage. Do you think that's something that Line6 would fix? The volume button for changing red/green inputs works fine.
I guess when I finally get a Pod X3 Live that I'll have volume on a pedal. I'm still looking for a good deal on one of those.
Honestly, I think having power provided by the DI box is the coolest thing ever. I absolutely hate cracking into my guitar to change batteries every few hours of play, especially before shows.
The bass is great! It's obviously not as versatile as the Variax Guitar, but it's perfect for what I need. I can't wait to get the Pod X3 Live and have a complete set up. DROOL.
Todd
Hi TJ
I have had a Variax 700 Bass (the same as your new one) for about 3 years now
I too have a failed volume pot (same symptoms) and am trying to obtain another from Line 6
I wish I could help you further
Regarding your setup - I also use a Variax 600 guitar and many other non-Variax axes
I love the 700 bass and even though I own a Warwick there are sounds with the Variax you just can't
get anywhere else!
I used the 700 with a POD XT LIVE (with added Bass Amp Packs)
and then later with the X3 LIVE
The Variax 700 performed brilliantly with both units - you can save all setups with each preset etc.
I have recently opted for an X3 Pro and FBV Express Mk2 instead as I am using
the guitars & X3 primarily for writing & recording rather than live use now
If you are performing live and choose the X3 Live then you will have a fantastic setup!
Also if you have other nice non-Variax basses you can run them thru the X3 Live bass presets
and get a fantastic range of different timbres
I would recommend the X3 Live over the XT Live as the X3 sounds and effects are even more awesome
All the best with your new toys and good luck with the vol. pot - go out and ROCK!
cheers Neilmac
Hi TJ
Good news with the bass Im sure you wont look back they are just so versatile. So sounds like you have decided to go with the X3 Live I personally think thats a good choice.
You guys have me worried with this whole volume pot thing though.
Neil I see that Line 6 still haven't offered to just sell the volume pot unless they don't have any in stock that is a little mystifying. Might be worth a new post being direct along the lines of Can I Purchase a Volume pot for a Variax bass direct from Line 6?
It is a common theme long delays through the Line 6 resellers, from what I have seen on the forums, so I will be interested to see what Line 6 does on this one myself.
Thanks David
Yes will take your sage advice and post more directly!
And yes the volume pot failure / noise is a big issue for playing live or recording
cheers
Neil
Neil,
It's interesting to hear that someone else has the same problem.
Did you ever use the volume pedal on the Pod live then rather than the knob for volume control? Does that work okay?
Does the push button on the volume knob still work okay for you? Mine seems to work okay, but I'm worried it may fail too.
I'm curious why you chose to use the Pod Live unit for studio work, and the Pod Pro for live work. That seems backwards to me.
Todd
Hi Todd
Just to set you straight I have not palyed live for years
(but am itching to get out there again - had my own orig. band in the 80's
I was using the POD XT Live (and then the X3 Live) for studio use
I couldn't afford the X3 Pro and FBV which would have been ideal
I then spent some time with a POD X3 and FBV Express
only to realise the lack of Variax linkage etc.
.....so now I am purchasing the POD X3 PRO!
Regarding the 700 bass vol. pot:
Yes you can always use the pedal for volume but you will find as I did that the unstable vol. pot
may cut out signal altogether if bumped, as mine does when I'm slapping - I hit it with my finger and CRACKLE POP no AUDIO!!
It must be fixed or replaced
My push button Red / Green switch seems to be fine but sometines if I go
from green to red then back, the audio will cut out until I swizzle the vol. knob
- and then the ensuing crackles etc.
just a bit useless!
So this is again the unpredictable vol. pot not the switch
There have been many posts about faulty Vol. pots - some customers have been helped directly
I am hoping they are all still away on holiday and I'll be saved shortly!
The model select knob failed on my Variax 600 also last year and it took the local Line 6 repairer 4 months to fix (see my other posts!)
If I get no help from Line 6 with my 700 I am going to remove the faulty vol. pot myself and replace with a normal one
plus install a separate momentary push switch for the Red/Green select
I cannot believe you have to go on the forum in the hope of being attended to for support
instead of being able to communicate directly with someone at Line 6!!
Come on guys - Help a loyal long time customer out!!
cheers Neil
