Variax 700 - no sound at all !!

Problem happened after I connected to a pod x3 live using the alternative "network" cable connection. Lots of low frequency buzzes then nothing -
this may be coincidence though.
Have tried a soft reset - no joy.
Have tried battery power - no joy.
The XPS seems to be working ok - green light displays - and there is a clunk from the amp if you touch the TRS cable before connecting to the 700.
I can't update firmware etc as the pod x3 live is not recognised in windows 7 - also workbench will not install due to Java Runtime Environment errors.
I have tried to connect on a pc with windows xp but can't install the drivers for the x3 live - "There was a problem installing the drivers for this device" Error code 10.
All in all very frustrating - seems I have a very attractive piece of wood at the moment. Rethinking my involvement with technology - think I'll return to my totally reliable acoustic guitar.
Anyone any ideas before I either put this thing in the trash can or resort to the no doubt expensive authorised repair centre.

Hi: I have a 300 and the end result was the same as yours - no sound at all. But now and again, it would play and when it did everything was fine. In my case there was a crimp in the umbilical cord between the selector switch board and volume/tone/model board. The repair was minor and everything is fine again. It doesn't sound exactly like what you are going through but I thought I would comment. Have you had any success yet in resolving your issues?
From what I've heard, most Variax problems are caused by the same thing - someone trying to plug a 1/4 inch cable into the Variax (ethernet) jack. Depending on which pins are boogered up you get different symptoms. You may have had some bent pins and when you connected the cable it shorted something out.
My cost at an authorized repair center for replacing the jack was $50. The original quote if it needed a new motherboard was $300, so even worst-case it's still not too bad.
Silly question, but have you tried a different cable? I've found XPS cables to be temperamental.
You can try these reset options, too:

Hi all
Thanks for your comments and suggestions.
I did use the correct digital cable in the correct socket, have used a second TRS cable and tried the reset procedure - all without success.
The digital cable does power the Variax and I now recall I connected to the X3 Live with the digital connection whilst the normal power supply was still connected.
This may seem a daft question but has this caused my problem - would have thought it should not be possible to power with the digital cable and power supply simultaneously as a safety precaution.
Any ideas - if this is the case is it a staight forward repair ?.
Hope someone can advise me.
Neil.
