Well I finally got round to doing it!
3 years after I bought my Variax 600 and not having really played it that much I went for the big transplant,
To be honest the main reason I didn't play it that much was that I had issues the Variax body itself! I really didn't like it, in the same way that I really don't like playing Strats, but if felt very small and insubstantial. I didn't have an issue with the neck - I thought it was quite nice except a bit narrow at the nut (Strat again).
So, being a Telecaster fan - and Thinlines particular, I transplanted my 600 into a Fender Honey Blonde Telecaster Thinline reissue body (only 250 were made in that finish apparently). It also has a Fender '72 Thinline reissue maple neck.
It took a bit of work - especially as I had to route out the back for the the trem and the body depth gets a bit crucial (!) - but it all works perfectly and plays really nicely. Haven't routed out the battery compartment yet but maybe if I 'm really bored on a rainy Sunday I might get round to it...
Anyways, I shall post some pics once I take some nice 'guitar brochure-y' ones!
Can't wait to see it man.That is why I made my first one also,that and I love to tinker.Pics,pics,pics,pics!!!
The same for me : can't wait to see what you've done! Piiiiics ! ![]()
Here's some pics for you.
Unfortunately I didn't think to take pics as I was building, but I left the 'coffin' as is. The Tele body shape seems to accommodate the Variax 600 electronics quite well!
Please feel free to ask questions if you have any!
Cheers
Very nice work. The guitar is awesome like this. Now you can play a Variax again!
Next step is to do the same with mag pups
(just joking, heh : it's the impossible work I'm doing right now, with self assembled pots and so on and that's a pain where you think
)
-> @GhengisKong : good luck ![]()
That looks beautious! Nice work!
Very nice,very clean.Congrats dude,and enjoy!!Now it's time to start another one right?????HA HA!!
That one is terribly awesome too ![]()
I'm doing my first transplant... my 300 into a Tele. Nice pickguard, I was thinking something similar but with more bottom horn coverage. Wish me luck!
I got the scratchplate from eBay - it is a standard Tele Thinline Type II but I got it made without any pickup or control holes cut and made the holes myself
I'm pretty sure it was "aiguitars". You can order scratchplates in any colour/material they have and with any configuration of pickups etc - they did a great job!
Stay in the mix and in the know.
