What does AGC on backtrack+mic really do?

I've been using the backtrack + mic to record rehearsals, and would like to know what the AGC setting does.
I've used it with gain set to 5, and AGC on - Medium, there's some clipping but it sounds pretty goood.
With gain at 5, and AGC set to high, it sounds more "muffled." Not bad, just not as clear.
I'll try out AGC low next week, but I thought hey... Line6 knows for sure what this does, even though the doc's say nothing.
Is the gain setting ignored? Does high adjust from 0-8? Or +/- 8 from my gain setting? Medium 2-6? Low 3-5?
Official info would be great!
Thanks,
Brian
Brian,
We do not have official specs on the AGC circuit to give you, but your assumption is a good description. It is an Automatic Gain Control that intelligently changes the gain level depending on the audio level it senses. A high setting would give greater fluctuation of the gain level depending on input, while a low setting has less gain level fluctuation.
