Sounds to me like it might be some other component that you've introduced in your setup that is causing the reaction with both the original POD and the POD XT. Sounds too coincidental to me that both units would suddenly "lose" their tone and start to sound compressed. What other device (amp, pedal, ...) did you start to use about this time? I'd look there, and start tweaking to get the good tones back.
