which amp to get? (spider iv vs vetta ii)

ok, i currently have a vetta 2.5 and am pretty happy with it. play mostly alt rock and hard rock, but like to experient with sound and do alot of ambient stuff too. i'm looking for a second amp and am torn between getting a new spider iv or picking up a used vetta combo (for really cheap!) i'm not really looking for a stage amp, as i currently dont gig. do mostly DI recording with the guitar, as i dont have the option to crank and mic an amp. given this, i'm thinking that the Spider Valve is out, cuz i cant turn up the amp and dont really want to hassle with changing tubes (plus its so much more expensive).
so i was considering these 2 options: a new spider iv or a used vetta. kinda psyched about the new tones on the spider. what i've read about the new modeling, some of these sounds should be better than the vetta tones right? i mean, it is their latest and greatest in modeling (and the vetta hasnt been updated in years!). but since the spider is a lower end unit, maybe the vetta does still sound better? really concerned about the DI outs on the spider. i had a spider ii a few years ago and the outs on that were terrible. granted, even the DI's on the vetta are substandard, and i'm wrestling with getting the armin mods in order to get better DI recordings. the spider doesnt have any mod options or cabinet output options right? will i be stuck with the weird eq curves on the spider DI out?
any advice or input would be much appreciated! thanks
This is very subjective, but personally, I think the Spider IV is a poor choice for direct recording. It has no digital out, and the only analog out is the headphone jack, which is unbalanced and cuts out the speaker.
If you're mostly interested in recording and not playing out, I would either go with a POD or do the amp modeling in software using POD Farm (or any of the worthy competitors: Revalver, Amplitube, Guitar Rig, etc.).
ah, you bring up a good point. i totally forgot about the X3. i guess what got me thinking about the spider iv was the new tones, supposedly being their best to date. would those new tones be available to update on the X3? cuz that might be a good solution, move my vetta over to my practice spot and use the X3 in my recording setup.
and one more question, i heard that if i acquire the armin mod for my vetta, then i cant use custom tone and the editor for patches? so will installing that mod (which i'm really interested in because of the supposed improved sound on recording direct in) mean i cant use any updates now, if say line6 provides an update for the vetta with new tones/effects?
I suggest you don't buy anything without trying it out first. That way you will leave the store a happy customer and will be a happy owner of some new gear. Buying without trying is risky because the odds are you won't like it, then what.....
Try before you buy then be happy with your purchase. Thats the only sure way (or your best bet). ![]()
Personally I'm not that impressed with the new models, but what do I know.![]()
Good luck

youre right, i probably need to go and hear it for myself since tone is so subjective. i just hate going to GC, i've yet to have a good experience there (but thats a whole other topic). plus, i think it takes time to tweak tones and get to know what it can do... and that's hard to do with others amps blaring the latest djent and drop tuned brootalz all around you. but thanks for your personal recommendation (or thumbs down on the new tones). i guess i just need to take my time on this decision. its just tough when you suffer from G.A.S. and you actually have a lil cash for once
plus that vetta option is gone, someone else jumped on the steal of a deal. damn
I understand fully. Been there.
Go in the store and take you time no matter how many times you need to tell the salesman to bug-off. ![]()
Its your dime and the better you spend it (make the right decisions) the happier you're going to be in the end.
Make a rash decision today and tomorrow nobody involved will be happy. Get my point.
Best of luck man

Get a pod if you really want to do DI recording. it is your best bet. With my Spider IV HD 150 (currently broken) the Headphone Jack does provide a good analog recording but, i needed to run the signal through a cab model to get the right tone i wanted. The Vetta would have been better then the Spider IV but what gone is gone. Personally, i would choose something in the POD family to do recording with over a new amp since it sounds like you are mildly happy with your vetta 2.5.
yea, thanks for the input. i think i'm gonna save my money and wait and instead use my time going thru the user tones. there's so much out there that i really should spend time exploring and finding a few tones that get me what i want. i'll probably also explore the armin mods after that. and maybe by then, there will be talk of a vetta iii... yea right ![]()
