UX2, installed correctly, but no sound

Hey everyone,
I just upgraded to a new machine, an Acer Aspire 7740G running Windows 7 64bit. I downloaded the windows 7 drivers and install seemed to go fine. When I first plugged it in, I got the usual dual flashing red lights while the drivers were installed, then the level meters lit up and everything seemed fine. I get no sound out the device though. If I play any sounds on the computer, it seems to be playing, but the level meters aren't moving and there's no sound. If I unplug the UX2, the laptop speakers kick in and I can hear the music, I plug the UX2 back in and there's no sound. The level meter in the sound/playback devices window doesn't activate either, so there's nothing being sent to the UX2. Does anyone know of anything at all I can try here?
*EDIT*: If I keep plugging/unplugging the UX2 while I have music playing, sometimes the sound from the UX2 will kick in fine, but it only lasts about 10 seconds then cuts out again. I have tried both the latest stable windows 7 drivers and also the latest Beta, but neither solve the issue.
*EDIT* If I open pod farm, then go to preferences>hardware>Line 6 audio-MIDI devices and open that dialog, then the UX2 suddenly starts working normally, but again will only work for about 10 or 15 seconds then stop working again. Does this give a clue to what might be happening?
Thanks
TUUK
Go into the Windows sound panel, and make sure that your PC's sound card is set as the default device, and not your UX-2.
If you have speakers directly connected to the UX-2, ignore what I just told you, and do just the opposite.
I have headphones hooked up to the UX2. Unless I'm missing something blindingly obviously here, the UX2 HAS to be set as the default device in order for it to produce sound, doesn't? If I set the internal sound card to default device I get sound out the laptop speakers as expected. If I set the UX2 to default device, I get nothing. This is expected behaviour considering the UX2 driver doesn't seem to be doing anything.

What you are doing is correct if you are listening through headphones.
I have my PC's sound card set as the default device and run a line from the UX-2's analog outs into the PC's line/aux in. That way I don't have to mess with what is set to the default device.
Have you checked the UX-2's headphone volume control on top of the box? You might also want to look at the monitor volume in GearBox (There's probably one in POD Farm too, but I'm not sure where to find it)
All dials and levels are set fine. It works on the other machine, just not the new one. The level meters themselves don't even move on the UX2 when playing a guitar through it. The fact that it springs to life when I open the control panel and then stops after two seconds confirms beyond doubt that it's a driver/software issue.

I would tend to agree, to make sure the drivers aren't corrupted, uninstall everything and reinstall using the GearBox 3.72 package (contains current Win 7 drivers)
Double check all of your audio settings. Win 7 is slightly different from Vista, and a lot different than XT. BTW, I'm running Win 7 64 bit, and it works fine.
I believe I'm experiencing the same problem. Here's my situation:
- Toneport UX2 + Gearbox + PodFarm all worked perfectly on my old Windows XP laptop.
- New laptop running Windows 7.
- Installed Windows 7 drivers for Toneport UX2 and Gearbox but they have never worked properly on this computer (didn't install PodFarm as there's no Windows 7 version yet).
- UX2/Gearbox work normally for a short time (30 sec to 2 min) then there is some quiet crackling and the input levels go down to zero (tested both instrument inputs and one of the mic inputs).
- Uninstalled and reinstalled all Line6 drivers today with newest versions. Checked and tried three sets of guitar cables and a mic.
* I agree this looks like a driver problem. I played with stuff on the input end just to confirm this - but the fact is that I can input and hear sounds in Gearbox for a short time, then all input levels drop to zero. *
EDIT: Forgot to mention, Gearbox/UX2 will sometimes but not always resume proper reading of inputs if I change the input device (ie from instrument to mic, then back again) or close and reopen Gearbox. But it never works long enough to practice or play a song, just long enough to **** me off and get me combing through support boards. Any ideas?
Yep, sounds like exactly the same problems. Just a note though, the Vista version of Podfarm works flawlessly in Windows 7. Been using it for months with no problems until I got this new machine.
Thanks for the response. I installed the Vista version of PodFarm to try it out but encountered the exact same problem. Works fine for a minute or so, then the input level meters displayed on the UX2 freeze for a second, sound cuts out, and input levels fall down to zero. Sounds like the same driver problem is affecting both Gearbox and PodFarm.
I have exactly the same problem with the guitar port in WIndows 7 64 bit AND 32 bit. Why isn't Line6 dealing with the problem?? No need to sell more devices?
I'm still having the same issues. Its exactly the same as others have said, it works fine for a very short while, there's some crackling, the level meters freeze, sound stops then the meters drop to zero. Opening the control panel and selecting devices brings it back to life, but only for a short while then it repeats.
Where is the support here? I thought marking this as a question would get me help from Line6? I've seen nothing for the company. Help me out here. Your drivers have turned my, and other people's, hardware into a paperweight. How about some help here?

Hi guys,
I've been talking to a couple of other people having similar issues. The trend seems to be that audio will drop out and then come back intermittently for a short time upon launching the Line 6 Audio MIDI Control Panel.
This isn't effecting everyone but it is effecting enough of you to warrant a serious investigation. That being said if I could ask you guys to work with me to gather some info I'd really appreciate it.
Attached to this reply is a troubleshooting checklist that I have put together. Please download it and fill it out and then re-attach it to your reply. Once we've tried those tips we can move forward.
If none of the tips change the behavior let me know and I will create tickets for each of you and add you to an existing bug I have logged.
A couple of things to keep in mind;
- please make sure you are using the latest driver (4.0.2.6)
- you have filled out your detailed support profile at http://line6.com/account/supportprofile/
- reply back to me with a good recipe of how you are able to reproduce this issue. Recipe form would be like:
1. Connect device
2. Launch WMP
3. Stream audio
result is drop out....etc, etc..
Being as detailed as possible is super important and I appreciate it very much. Let's work together here to see if we can get this issue resolved.

Just quick update and question Line6Miller. I adjusted the buffer size as one of the troubeshooting steps. It was on the second lowest by default which is where I was getting audio dropouts. I increased by one to the right which seems to have cut out the audio drops outs but introduces stuttering and pops every few minutes lasting a couple of seconds. It's still an improvement though. Trying to reselect the original lower setting immediately causes the audio to stop, causing me to have to close and reopen the audio panel to get audio back.
The question I have is that I was going to try messing with the buffer size and bit depth as per your document, but I noticed that here is says "ASIO Client: (none)". Is this normal?
I'll keep trying your troubleshooting tips. Is there any reason why I need to have a larger buffer on a faster machine than I was using the lowest setting on before with no issues?
Thanks for the help and advice so far

Line6Miller,
Tried out your troubleshooting tips.
Recipe:
1. Connect UX2.
2. Start Gearbox.
3. Confirm same problem - audible sound for less than a minute, then cracks/pops and input meters drop to zero, all sound stops.
4. Sound seems to restart and work fine for about a minute if I switch source select from instrument to mic back to instrument, so I can revive things temporarily this way.
5. Test cables (they're fine).
6. Buffer Slider in Audio MIDI Control Panel: moving the slider to the two medium settings removes the sound stop problem (meaning I can play longer than a minute) but there are some intermittent cracks and pops. The second largest setting seems to remove both the sound stop problem and cracks and pops.
7. Sample Rate/Bit Depth: moved buffer slider down to second smallest setting (causing sound stop problem again) to see if adjusting sample rate/bit depth while buffer slider on smaller would work. Adjusted from 16 bit, 44100 Hz to 24 bit, 44100 Hz --> the same sound stop problem of signal drops (after awhile the sound comes back for a minute or so then drops out again). Adjusted from 16 bit, 44100 Hz to 16 bit, 48000 Hz --> the same sound stop problem occurs, although possibly for shorter intervals with longer playing times). This seems to make no difference so I left it on 24 bit, 48000 Hz and restored the buffer slide to second highest setting --> noticed a few cracks and pops but no random sound stop problems.
8. Set UX2 as the default soundcard and disabled built-in soundcard.
9. USB connections are direct.
10. No USB connections except keyboard, mouse & UX2.
11. Didn't try disabling wireless card.
As you can see, the biggest difference seems to be the buffer slider. On higher settings I get only occasional cracks and pops. This will be annoying when I'm recording but is good for now since I can at least practice using the UX2 and Gearbox.
This is exactly the same as my experience. Moving the buffer slider up to medium stops the audio drop outs but there are still sufficient pops and crackles that it's useless for recording. I can practice but it's still annoying. It's not perfect and it's certainly not the experience I bought the hardware for. It'll do for the short term until this problem with the drivers is resolved. If it ever is.

I am having this exact same problem, no one seems to have a good solution yet, how is everyones systems doing? Any updates at all?
thanks
I posted this in another thread but thought it best to keep it in one place.
Hi community
I purchased a UX2 about a month ago and was using it happily with Reaper, I managed to write a song and all was great, until my laptop totally died. So some weeks later I have purchased a new laptop, twice the memory, bigger hard drive, faster processor but the same make Acer. This new laptop is running Windows 7 64 bit, which is the only difference to my previous set-up as I was running Windows 7 32 bit.
So upon recieving my new laptop, a core i3, Acer with 4gb of RAM, 512 graphics dedicated, 320 gb HDD, I went about installing Reaper, which is my preffered DAW, that installed fine with no issues. Then I installed the UX2, Line Mnkey and got it up to date with the latest drivers and also Pod Farm 2, great.
I started up Reaper, went in to the preferences>Devices and selected the ASIO drivers, everything appeared correct so I applied the changes and hit play, nothing, the play transport just froze, until about 15-20 seconds later when my track would start, but it would glitch and pop horribly. At this point I had set everything up in exactly the same way as it had been on my older, less powerful laptop.
I tried downloading ASIO4ALL, not much better at all, still exactly the same issue.
I disabled the onboard sound, no improvement.
I increased the buffer size to "large" and did get a slight improvement, however, it wasn't instant and it still glitched.
My issue is, I am using exactly the same UX2, the same DAW, on a FASTER machine, with exactly the same set up steps and it just fails every time, and I am really gutted about it, I want to do nothing but create music and now I can't, it's really quite a bother for me. I purchased a microphone, bass guitar, keyboard....and I can't use any of it!!!
Please can you help, i'll try whatever I need to in order to fix it, and please let me know if you need more detailed info, I will provide, and I sincerley appreciate any support and help I can get as I am DESPERATE to start writing my second song!!!
Kind regards
Oliver Johnson
Hi everyone,
I've just upgraded my pc and am now experiencing the same symptoms as described here. I've found a couple of threads such as this one explaining the problem, but none with the ultimate resolution. Just wondering if there's been any breakthroughs??? I get complete audio loss after 30 seconds or so, whereupon it comes back very briefly after opening the Audio/MIDI Options window. I'm going through the optimisation checklist now. What fun!
