Sorry to break the flow and please feel free to ignore this as I'm posting this here instead of taking up valuable space on the blog Rich has for his new info regarding the Variax...
eugovector says:Yeah, a sound sample is worth a thousand words. This is just a lot of patting the guitar on the back. And the one sample we get is the sitar…REALLY? The sitar was the first thing I took off my variax to make room for a “Strat” model that didn’t artificially chop off sustain.
I felt this needed to be try to get my curiosity quenched by quoting what was written elsewhere and discuss it here...
"eugovector says: The sitar was the first thing I took off my variax to make room for a “Strat” model that didn’t artificially chop off sustain"
Since you must have Workbench to remove and replace a patch, why did you remove any patch to modify a guitar model already in a bank? Making a new patch of a modified version of a guitar/guitars you're obviously unhappy with seems like a waste of space to me. Why not just improve the Strats already in that bank so you can have an entire bank of Strats in each of the standard 5 positions with your desired longer sustain that you stated you've deleted the Sitar patch for?
It's seems **in my humble opinion** that you wasted a slot on the Vax for just one customized guitar that you could have easily done and left in its original bank slot - unless you like the
pre-loaded strat patches? Just the thought I had reading your remarks.
There is also now a new thread started by "Crusty_Old_Rocker" that discusses all the reasons why Workbench and a Variax guitar can do many more things than most owners are aware of. Or perhaps even thought of by the original designers when they created both the guitars and Workbench.
Take care,
Neal

I would just like to add just an extra 2¢ here.
If Variax users are unsure of what possibilities there are for what Crusty has written about here or need a few ideas of how creative one can get that they visit AndyZ's Institute of Noise at http://www.instituteofnoise.com/. Follow the Line6 Users Group link > Patches > Search the Data Base > Product (Variax) > make your selection from there and download some other Variax/Workbench user's patches and or bundles and see how they have taken advantage of this powerful tool Line6 created to help us with our vaxes.
Also worth noting that there is a partial unofficial Line6 WorkBench Tutorial here http://www.vettaville.nl/page.php?id=95 at Vettaville.nl that was never completed for some further help especially for some "Recipes for Success" with the Pickup and Controls pages in the Workbench Editor for Tone Shaping help.

I see people are talking about pod X3 live. I want to buy pod x3 but I prefer the normal small pod than the larger live one. Will it offer the same functionality with a Tyler Variax?

Short answer, no it won't! It has no 'Variax' connection. Only the X3 pro and X3 Live have.

I would like to have a stripped down version... all i want is a strat that sounds like a les paul.... i prefer a strat neck or an ibanez neck.... but i want the fat chunk of a les paul... but without naving to play a les paul... better yet, just give me a stomp box that will do that :-)

Are you serious? There are dozens of guitars out there that can do that, starting with the Fender Fat Strat. I know, purists, it doesn't sound "EXACTLY" like a Les Paul, but I bet I could EQ it just a little and fool you in a blindfolded listening test. I'm sure there are plenty of stompboxes that will do this too. gonuclear59, you don't need a Variax. The "fat chunk of a les paul" is one of the easiest sounds to achieve -- just add a humbucker. Now if only I could get the very specific twang of a Strat out of my Les Pauls (which I LOVE playing). The only solution I know of is the RackVax.

Hey, I've got an American-made Fender Double Fat Strat that I'm selling. I wanted the same thing you want but I decided I prefer the Les Paul's neck.

lol... man, i gotta ask ya..have you ever actually had a les paul? i do have an am. strat with a mo joe humbucker in the bridge... i also have a gibson les paul.. iput the humbucker in the strat trying to fatten up the sound.. it did... it's about like an ibanez rg now... but it's no where near my les paul... i even tried splitting the coil in my les paul to try an brighten it up like a fender scale guitar..didn't work.. i've found out that 24.75" guitar, like a gibson, sounds dark and thick.... and a 25.5" scale guitar, like a strat, sounds bright and thin... i want the neck and expressiveness of a strat and the thick chunk and punch of my lp.

I agree - I have both a LP and a Fender American Fat Strat, and that Strat is never gonna sound like a Les Paul. There ain't nothin sweeter sounding than that big chunk of mahogany. Which is one of the reasons I look forward to the JTV, but not the main one. Alternate tunings will be very convenient. And having a jazz box model will be nice too.

i tell ya what i'd really like... i want the ability to mix the strat and les paul sound together at the same time. and maybe a balance between the two that will vary the mix. wouldn't that be awesome? :-)

Buy 2 JTVs and put the electronics from both guitars into the same guitar. That would be a LOT of knobs on the same instrument, and you'd need a dual POD/Vetta setup if you wanted to use it to it's fullest.

Nah, just buy a JTV-59 or JTV-69 and feed the mag pickups to one amp and the Variax model via DVI cable to a Vetta or Pod X3 or Live! Close enough.

this is a really cool idea... i wonder if it will play both mag p-up's and models at the same time.. or will i have to cut another hole and run two cords... no.. **** wait a min... i can change the plug jack to stereo re-wire it on the inside... wire the other end of the cord with a mono, both pos+ soldered together.. or split into a Y and send it into two different channels.. then i wouldn't need a balance.. just wire two vol's and blend them to dial it in.... ok, i may have to buy one of these.. :-)

The VDI input on the HD500 can be set to Variax channel 1 and or Variax channel 2. So it appears that the HD500 is geared up to give you the opportunity to run modelling and magnetic together. This would mean that you could combine a modelled acoustic with a magnetic (electric) or a Strat model with a humbucker, etc.
It would appear that the HD500 is going to be the ideal POD to go with the JTV.
Cheers,
Crusty
