DT 50 background noise

Hi, I've had my DT50 212 for a couple weeks and have become very comfortable with it and really, really like it except for 1 thing. In any topology even in the one setting .. I have a constant level of white noise which is kind of loud.. I couldn't imagine wanting to record a clean guitar part with this amp due to the constant background wooossh.
My main question to this group is .. Do you guys and gals also have this very noticable level of background wooosh ??? I'd like to find out if my amp is doing something others are not or this is just going to be part of this still great amp.
thanks! Dan.
Is this your first tube amp? The reason I ask is that all tube amps create a decent amount of hiss. Class A amps- like topology III, have hum to go along with the hiss. This is normal, and when you're playing it is masked by the guitar sounds. Also, because the DT50 has a digital preamp capable of high gain, there is more hiss than a normal tube amp with lower gain.
All this being said, the hiss should be at a fairly low level, in the background, if it is louder than that I'd take it in to your dealer to be checked out.
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm very familiar with tube amps .. and this seems whoosh is different than normal tube gain noise.. which usually is not existant ( or greatly reduced ) in tube amps i've owned on their clean channel. With the DT50 it is more a constant. I am not used to digital or solid state amps so this may be normal .. just seems like a lot higher level then what others would find acceptable.
I've not read or heard anyone else mention this.. so this could be a higher level on my particular amp. thx, Dan.
Switch from Class A/B to A on the III voicing and it will get a lot quieter. Personal experience talking here...:)
I have the 112. When I first tried my new amp (in the living room) I didn't noticed any background noise but once I moved it to my home studio the noise appeared. Quite loud too! For me, it was just a consequence of "ground/earth" problem I have in this room (house extension which electrical network doesn't seem properly grounded). However, I have noticed that turning the volume knobs down (channel and master to zero) does not solve the problem, the noise is still there! How is that possible?
BTW, this DT50 is an amazing sounding amp!
I have the same problem....volume down, but the noise is still there. What's the deal??
I had terrible white noise. I just changed out both 12AX7 tubes with Tung-Sol 12AX7 tubes. I am thrilled to say that my white noise level has dropped significantly. Down to what I would consider normal. If I was at a 10, I am now at a 2. On top of that, the amp seems to sound much better over all. I seem to have even more power yet can now dial in acceptable low volumes. I am very happy I tried this.
I experienced this white noise effect that was soooo not normal last night when I turned on my 2x12. Fortunately turning the amp off and back on fixed the problem. If this starts happening more often...well it may have to go to the shop.
well it has happened allot more of late but a simple noise gate fixed the problem at least for now. I have never needed a noise gate
for white noise in the past only brought it out for feedback.......oh well moving on now

Does changing out the tubes void the warranty? It looks like those tubes are about $15 a piece, which would be a small price to pay to get rid of that noise.
Hi mmasse,
can't answer your question about warranty exactly. I just assume that if you are using propper spears there shouldn't be any warranty issue.
BUT about the background noise I can tell you my experience:
1. Changed the so called pre amp tubes. No effect on background noise, but nice sound improvement.
2. As a LINE6 technician in these forum strongly recommends (because the modeling software has a huge part on the overall tone) : reinstalled latest firmware and backgroud noise was gone!
Hope that helps.
Rock On!
Thanks for that suggestion. For whatever reason, my DT50 is not detected using my Fireface 800 midi. I just ordered one of those cheapo midi-to-USB cables off Amazon, so maybe that will work. Which firmware update got rid of the noise for you? I only ask because my amp is pretty new (about a month), so I suspect it came with recent firmware. But if updating the firmware gets rid of the noise, it's definitely worth a shot. The noise makes the amp useless for recording.
I reinstalled the latest firmware 1.20 (Release date 1/6/11) - same firmware as before.
Don't no why it helps. So therefore it could fail as well in your cae. But it's worth a try, because I seems to be that I am not the only one who could solve the background noise with the easy going procedure.
For your info:
My DT50/212 starts to produce a background noise which can be described like the sound of a defect potentiometer about 2 minutes after switching the stand by button.
If some people are getting the noise, and some people aren't, then some people's amps are broken or are malfunctioning. If updating/reinstalling the firmware doesn't fix the problem, I'm interested to hear what Line 6 suggestions I try next before sending the amp back for a full refund.
I'd rather buy a reliable and legit AC30 than something that emulates it, but does so with the added bonus of a bunch of hiss and noise. I'm mean, seriously.
what tubes did you replace them with?
Here may be some suggestions on what to do with the "white hiss" and "dirty pot noise.
It happened to me and I updated to the latest version on the DT50 Head (used the
to the M-Audio's MIDIsport UNO, quirky updating but got it to go). and changed the tubes
to Tung-Sol 12AX7's ( Called Line 6 and no, changing out the "little tubes" won't void the warranty,
the power tubes a different story)
No didn't get reimbersed for the tubes.or my labor either, LOL)
The amp is much quieter, and ROCKS!!!! Love it
