Probems recording/playing back with Line 6 RiffWorks

I have just purchase a Line 6 Spyder Valve MKII head amp which I connect through a mic port to my M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB. It connects to my computer obviously via USB and I can record just fine and play back through Audacity. I just purchased RiffWorks and it basically doesn't work.. When I first installed it couldn't detect my M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB stating it was using my Windows Built In Audio so using the Audio Setup button basically did nothing. I then installed ASIO4ALL and then it could detect the device, and I could even record. However I can't hear the play back... I can see the sound levels rise and fall as I play, but nothing comes out of my spearkers, head phones, or ports on my M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB when I am playing back through RiffWorks. My M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB is set as my default play back and recording device and as mentioned I can listen to music through the device, but only when using RiffWorks do I have a problem.. When I hit playback please note I can see the levels on the recorded audio rise and fall as well, but nothing comes out of my speakers..
You mention that you just purchased Riffworks. What version of Riffworks are you using? The title of yopur post mentions Line 6 Riffworks. The Line 6 Edition is an old (and now obsolete) product. If that's what you are using I suggest you try the newer free version called Rifworks T4.
In my version, Riffworks Standard (a deep-discount price is available for Line 6 Riffworks owners), there is an Audio Setup button in the bottom right corner of the screen. If you can find that in your version, see if you can configure things to resolve your problem.

That is what I just purchased for $129 dollars. I have other programs I can record with. I pretty much purhcased the program for the online effects and instant drummer. I do have the audio setup menu, and I have been playing with it for hours. Also you may like to know upon launching the program the first time I was asked to download and install UpdateRiffWorksStandardV2_6_3383 so I assume my version is up to date.
Below is a more detailed version of my troubleshooting steps. Maybe that will help.
I can record through RiffWorks and as I am playing I can see the levels of sound as I play at the bottom left, and bottom right. If I hit play after I am finished I can see the sound, but I can''t hear it play back. I have my default recording and playback device set to the M-Audio Fast Track Pro. When I first installed RiffWorks and tried to use the Audio Setup I received a message stating "RiffWorks is using your system default audio device, audio setup requires an ASIO device'" which lead me to discover the program couldn''t discover my audio devices without installing ASIO4ALL. After installing ASIO4ALL I was able to find and configure my M-Audio Fast Track Pro in RiffWorks but I continued to receive the message "the ASIO sample rate is not support by one of the USB interfaces" which then lead me to check my sample rates and I set it to 256. I then went to the M-Audio website and install the latest versions of the drivers for my device.
Now I am back at I can record through RiffWorks and as I am playing I can see the levels of sound as I play at the bottom left, and bottom right but I can’t hear the play back even when trying to play back through headphones or speakers using my on board sound, or my M-Audio Fast Track Pro. When I click audio setup I am able to get into that menu now and I see my output channel which is the M-Audio Fast Track Pro but the ASIO device says ASIO4ALL v2 and in your tutorials I see you have a hardware device selected. I confirmed the M-Audio Fast Track Pro device supports ASIO in the drivers, so it looks like it is a problem with RiffWorks. I can record using Audacity without any problems, and hear my play back through my M-Audio Fast Track Pro device.
I've also attached a screenshot of the Audio Setup menu which may or may not be helpful for you to see. As far as I can tell that is the only menu I can actually tinker with settings. I understand the product is supposed to be very verys simple, but some how I feel that is my problem.. I think if I had more control settings maybe I could figure this out. Based on the amount of settings available to change at this point I think I've tried everything possible short of buying another USB interface that someone else confirms working. I suspect my problem is RiffWorks not my hardware or configurations. I have a ticket in with Sonoma and I'm waiting to hear back from them. In the mean while if anyone has any suggestions my ears are open.
I think the problem is ASIO4ALL. It's not a true ASIO driver and it sounds to me Riffworks is expecting a true ASIO driver. From what I can see through a quick google serach, your Fast Track audio interface should include a true ASIO driver with it. If you can make sure this driver is installed, and get Riffworks to recognize/use it instead of ASIO4ALL, I suspect you'll be OK.
I felt that way prior to my post as well. I thought if I could get through that issue and not use ASIO4ALL everything would just work. Per the tutorial of how to setup the software they did not use the ASIO4ALL. I did confirm my unit has drivers that support ASIO but the software can't interface with it for whatever reason without ASIO4ALL. It can't even see the device.
Taken from the M-Audio website
Fast Track Pro also features near-zero latency direct hardware monitoring and low-latency ASIO software monitoring, plus an A/B source switch and dual output pairs for DJ-style cueing.

It doesn't appear the unit is to blame. I think the RiffWorks software has an ASIO bug or is only programmed for specific device support. That is my guess.
Forgive me for asking the obvious.... but you do have your speakers/headphones connected to the Fast Track device, not your computer, right?
That is correct. I also tried to plug headphones and speakers into my PC after I wasn't hearing playback. My first thought was it must just be routing it out another interface or port but nothing is coming out of any port.. I also went as far as rebooting my PC and disabling my on board sound in the BIOS all together and just using my USB M-Audio Fast Track Pro sound card. Still I had the same issue.

Could be I guess - but that sounds very strange. I have used several Line 6 devices with Riffworks Standard (same version you have) as well as with an Edirol audio interface and I have had no problems. Sorry I don't think I'll be able to help you - this one has me stumped. If anything else comes to mind I'll get back to you.
Its strange I agree. If I can't get it working I basically just through $129 away... I'm hoping that Sonoma support can help me or else I'll be calling Line 6 to complain and ask for a refund.. I've purchased thousands of dollars worth of Line 6 equipment so I'm hoping that will do something for me when push comes to shove. This is pretty bad software, I think. The lack of configuration menus and bugs are a bit much right out of the gate. So far I've mentioned and started a thread for this bug but there are a bunch I've seen up to this point. For the sake of staying on topic I will leave those out of the thread. I'm still open to fixing and using it, but my guess is that isn't going to happen..
I'd go after Sonoma. They include your Fast Track audio device under their list of recommened Windows devices for Riffworks:

I know, I already saw it.

I know both Sonoma and Line 6 have a no return policy for this software but my purchase history with Line 6 will likely help me get a refund from their store which is where I purchased it. I am in talks right now with Sonoma about support. An engineer is supposed to reach out to me Monday. We will see what happens. I will update the thread if I find an answer.
Hello,
This really sounds like it's more of Sonoma Wireworks issue with the application.
Work with Sonoma support and see if they can help you first. if not let us know and we'll see if we can get you a refund.

I would have to agree Line6Miller. I originally contacted Sonoma on Sat, Jan 22, 2011 at 2:54 PM. They just got back to me yesterday and I provided additional details as well as log files they requested. I will try to work with Sonoma first and let you know how I make out. For security purposes I have removed any personally identifiable information but I have attached the email thread between Sonoma support and myself up to this point. When I get more information I will let you know. Thanks for your reply.
Excellent. Thanks for following up. The support guys and girls over at Sonoma are very good. I think they'll be able to help you out but please keep us posted.

My only complaint so far is their time between replies. I'm not happy about waiting days or weeks to to resolve this issue. If it takes more than 2 weeks to resolve I would call that unacceptable.
I'm disappointed in the quickness to respond and work on my issue.
My problem was actually very simple to resolve.. It seems that the little tray icon that was installed along side of the drivers for my M-Audio Fast Track Pro was the entire problem. The reason being that it was programmed to keep programs from directly accessing the device. Sort of a middle man. I removed it from startup, removed ASIO4ALL, rebooted, and problem solved. I thought I had tried this but apparently I did not.
That being said I no longer need assistance. Thanks.
ASIO4ALL is the devil.
OK, but ASIO4ALL wasn't the problem so I don't immediately understand how that is helpful. It technically works for some audio devices and programs from what I hear.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
