How important is a certain screw?

Hello,
I recently heard some rattling from within my Pod HD500. I carefully opened the enclosure, touched nothing inside, and was able to snag both the screw and its accompanying nut by tilting. The screw is rather small, about 3/4 inches long, and has a cylindrical head that would accommodate a very small Allen-type bit. (Please see the attached images.)
I looked over the PCBs very thoroughly to find where the screw might have originally been mounted, and noticed a hole adjacent the USB port that would be about the correct size for such a screw. This hole is also near the PCB label "C5." (There is an identical screw next to the label "J5.") Due to the tight quarters in this area of the enclosure, it looked like replacing the screw (if this was the correct location) would require quite a bit of disassembly, so I opted not to attempt it for now. So far, I have observed no unusual behavior with the Pod.
Just how important is this screw? Can it be left out without likely detriment to the Pod? Also, could you please verify the correct location for it?
Thank you!
To be honest, that nut and bolt doesn't look at all familiar to me at all in terms of the insides of my HD500 - and I have looked at the insides of my HD500 in quite some depth to see how the various circuit boards could be removed etc....
BUT it does look similar to the nut and bolt that holds the foot switches in place. If all those nuts and bolts are present and correct, then I would suspect it's a stray nut and bolt that has ended up inside your POD during manufacture and that you can safely ignore it.
Nick
Thanks, Nick, I appreciate the response. I know it is hard to see this with the photographs I provided, but the screw is quite a bit smaller than the ones used to hold down the footswitches. I suppose it is possible, though it seems unlikely, that both a stray screw and a matching stray nut would find themselves lodged in the bowels of my Pod, and then dislodge simultaneously. I cannot verify this without a parts list, but I continue to believe the nut worked loose, and the screw fell out of its mounting hole...wherever that is.
Thanks again.
take a picture of where you think it goes
Hello,
I opened the enclosure again to supply the requested photo, and saw that it might actually be possible to replace the screw and nut without any disassembly. With the Pod facedown, I found that the screw fit in the suspected hole perfectly. Taking care not to make contact with any solder joints or components, I used a letter opener to slide the nut to its approximate location and hold it in place while turning the screw. Miraculously, the screw threaded without much trouble. After a moment of mechanical microsurgery, the screw was securely in place.
This screw and nut combination is used to secure a nylon spacer between two PCBs (see Spacer.jpg--sorry I couldn't get autofocus to cooperate). There are three other attachment points, one of them the "identical screw," as labeled in PCB.jpg. The other two attachment points are plastic pegs of some kind. Since my Pod does not see extremely rigorous duty, I doubt if leaving the screw out would have caused a problem. Still, it is nice to have everything as it should be.
I ended up solving my own problem, but I hope you (readers) find it interesting, anyway.
Thank you!
Nice troubleshooting and steady handage!
Do you get 5 points if you correctly answer your own question?

That DSP sure looks dirty. Whats with those finger prints all over everything?
It looked like some kind of adhesive that hardened after capturing some factory worker's fingerprints.

I agree... It seems like the process is not full automated now. Mine XT which was released in 2007 was clean as Cinderella's house when I disassembled it
By the way.. The pedal in XT and XT liked pedalboards is also optic ![]()
Could you please tell us what model of SHARK DSP is used in HD? And how much? I wondering whether it the same as in XT ![]()
POD HD DSP: SHARC ADSP-21369 at 333 MHz (KSZ-2A), 2.4 GFLOPS
POD X3 DSP: SHARC ADSP-21369 at 266 MHz (KSZ-1A), 1.6 GFLOPS
POD XT DSP: at 60 MHz, 180 MFLOPS
No not the same as XT. This is probably best guess since Line 6 specifications never include certain specifications.
Dude!!! You're screwed!
Gah, seeing these pictures of the insides of the HD ruins the illusion of the little elves and fairies that I imagined to be inside making all these wonderful noises come out!!!
:-p
Here are a few full-res internal photos of the Pod HD500 that I took while dealing this issue. Enjoy!
Hmmm, HD porn, you gotta love it ![]()
Cool it says Pod X4 Live.
Often a magnetized screwdriver helps in these situations.
Just get a good strong magnet and put it on the end of your screwdriver for a minute or two. I do this with all of mine because it's so useful.

Hi,
We have tracked that particular screw down and it looks to be one of the screws that holds the LCD assembly in place. There should be a plastic washer that goes in the middle of the screw. This is probably not an immediate problem but could possibly cause an issue over time if it is missing from the LCD assembly. Having said that, it could be an extra screw that accidentally made it's way into the unit during manufacturing. if you notice a screw that is missing from the top corner of the LCD display then you need to take the HD500 to an authoirzed service center for repair:

One of our techs informs me that the screw can be difficult to install correctly and there is a possibility of damage to the LCD screen.
Thanks,
David
Hi!
I have the same problem with the screw "J5"
Any idea how critical this is?
thanks,
Ruslan
Hi,
Having suffered the same problem on an second hand Ebay HD500,
I rang UK Tech support and was assured that, of course the screw should be fitted, however it would be highly unlikely to cause any problems in the future if it were removed.
I removed it 6 months ago and have had no problems whatsoever. And it has been used on a daily basis since.
Hope this helps.
