Help me list the legendary guitar tones

This thread is to be used as a master list of legendary guitar tones that people can build off of.  Help me out by pointing out missing artists and making tones for the ones that are missing good tones.

The tone links are only posted if they have 3 stars rating or better.  The legend is device-rating.  hd5-5 means it's an HD500 patch rated at 5 stars hd4-3 means HD400, 3 stars, etc..  Currently I'm only posting Pod HD links.

    Interesting definition of "Death Metal"..........

For the Metal Core you should have Chimaira and Machine Head in there for sure.

What a great idea.  I've been on these forums since the XT came out.  It used to be mostly how to get great tones and over the years has seemed to have devolved into "here's what's wrong".  I don't even own one (yet) but it's nice to see a discusion started about how to use it instead of what's wrong with it.

Even though it's fun to speculate, this thread is like listing the most beautiful women in the world- there are too many to list, and everyone has their own favorites. Of course, my wife is my favorite, right Sweetie?!

It'd be easier if everyone told me where to file a guitarist...I don't know who the h you guys are talking about so I gotta wikipedia everyone, which is cool and all but...

I think Craig Chaquico should be under 70's/80's rock, not 50's/60's - I believe he was in Jefferson Starship and later Starship but not Jeffereson Airplane. Jefferson Airplane guitarists were Kantner and Kaukonen?

And while we are stuck in 60's rock mode - I hesitate to mention him as I am the opposite of a fan, but... many people would say Jerry Garcia had "legendary tone"...

            WOW

I hate most metal music, but I respect those who do as I want to be respected for loving the music I do.

But one thing I always concluded when noticing some people being so closed up to other genres:

One that does not want the Music as a whole to keep on evolving and growing cannot consider himself a musician... PERIOD!

All signs point to that it already is man! It's a bit of a silly word, but it doesn't bug me and it shouldn't bug anyone else. Even I get classed as it, but purely because sometimes I use "weird" signatures (which is also sillly because ultimately it's all just 4/4) and 8 string guitars (even sillier because I use it on like 2 out of 13 songs). TBH it's kind of turning into a more all encompassing term for people who just like prog metal but for whatever reason won't say they're prog fans. Bizarre.

Some great tones that I would like to try to make  happen when I get more time:

John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, Jake Cinninger (Umprhrey's McGee), Eric Krasno (Soulive), ahh **** the list goes on and on and on.

We should stop talking about playing guitar and actually play more.

I understand the basic onomatopoeia, but to try and name a whole genre (that is basically just metal) off it, is pretty stupid in my opinion.

I think all Djent actually does, is give rise to terrible generic guitar tones.

Its a trend. A fashion, something that metal is supposed to be a catharsis for to a certain extent.

Of course djent enthusiasts will claim their tones rule, but only because they probably only listen to stuff that are trying to emulate in their bedroom.

What they don't realise is that what sounds "ok" in their bedroom doesn't transfer live or to pro recording and that no amount of downtuning can compensate for that.

I like the word, it's very descriptive.  What I don't like is the way it's been adopted to basically be associated with terrible overly processed generic guitar tones.

That said, I'm not a fan of many of the sub genres given to metal. Metal should just be metal at the end of the day.

No offence to you chimp, but I would personally be offended if someone said the metal stuff I do could be classed as Djent. lol

I think my breakdowns for the metal categories are good - you don't want your subgenres too small.  80's hair metal, 80's thrash, progressive, alt/nu metal, death metal, metalcore, and progcore mostly do have distinct guitar tones, which is really what I'm focusing on more than distinct styles of music.

Only 3 bands out of the 7 in your Death Metal catergory are actually Death Metal though.

Mastadon and Meshuggah and Opeth would be much better suited to prog metal in my opinion.

Paradise Lost have a more of a Goth Rock thing going in than being metal at all really.

Haha, but Meshuggah have been around for longer than the term Djent so they can't really be defined by it. hehe

I've heard people raving about Mastadon and I've given them a listen but they do nothing for me.

Opeth on the other hand. Wow. I really don't get how anyone could class them as Death metal! Opeth play some pretty heavy metal for sure, but it's also offset with some of the most epic and beautiful clean and acoustic stuff.

For the record, Death Metal does nothing for me.

OH! and Devin Townsend needs to be somewhere on that list. Somewhere in the metal but his music is so varied it's hard to pin him down.

Try categorizing King's X.  That is a band that almost needs its own genre.  Sabbath like riffs, Beatles like harmonies, progressive, soul and funk elements.  They have influenced entire genres of music yet sound like nobody else.

Just a quick detour from this thread (excellent thread, btw), to take the opportunity to do a big ol' +1,000,000 to any good King's X kharma.  I've loved those guys since about 1989 (I lived in Houston at the time, their adopted hometown) and saw them live 2 or 3 times.  Magical, special band.  I could listen to Doug's vocals over all that crazy Tabor guitar major key stuff for hours and hours on end.

Let me explain my "death metal" logic.  It's more of a category for bands that don't neatly fit into the other genres.

Meshuaggah should really be their own genre.  It's like progressive thrash death metal, but it only incorporates limited progressive elements (mostly in timing), and 80's thrash vocals are generally clean (focus on pitch over growl).  Moreover, Meshuggah plays mostly atonally, making labeling them even more difficult.

Opeth I feel belongs in a death metal category, but of course its progressive elements make it stand out from most death metal bands.  It's best labeled progressive death metal IMO, but I don't want to add a category for one band (even though I did for Lynch Mob, because I'm not sure where to put them).

I use the death metal label to refer to bands that use mostly growling vocals, but take greater derivation from 80's power metal than American blues rock or thrash (which I call metalcore - metalcore also focuses on rhythmic breakdowns or similar beats).  They generally sound more neoclassical than bluesy and their themes are often melancholy and focus on impending doom.  So I see it very similar to doom metal.

If anyone has a better classification system, I'm willing to adopt.  I just think we should try to keep this list simple rather than technically accurate.

If it doesn't fit neatly into any one genre, then why not just call it metal?.....

Growling vocals are not exclusive to Death Metal. I can think of a bunch of bands that use growling/screaming vocals and are not death metal. Some are even on your list already.....In Flames, Chimaira, Killswitch Engage, Unearth.....some of my favourite bands, but like I said, I can't stand Death Metal.

That aside. Opeth have a significantly more progressive elements to their music than they do death metal elements. Like I said before, I don't understand how anyone who listens to Opeth could class them as being death metal in the slightest.

Blast Beats while not being entirely confined to just death metal, still define the genre because it's this kind of ornamentation that real Death Metal bands use. A lot..

If it's heavy but doesn't have blast beats maybe but shares either vocal stylings or particularly gloomy subject content, to me, then thats black metal.

Keep Opeth in the Death Metal slot if you want, it's your list but I personally think it's misinformed and doesn't do Opeth justice.

That's funny, I grew up a prog rock fan of old Genesis, Rush, Marillion, etc.  The term djent is irritating to me.  I don't know why.  At least prog is just short for progressive.  Djent just looks like a word that someone came up with to irritate me.  LOL!  I'll get over it. ;-)

Re: Help me list the legendary guitar tones

Given it's onomatopaeic (I hate that word) roots, it's kind of strange that very few bands actually do any 'Djent' in their music at all. As I said in another thread, beginning of 'Soul Burn' is Djent. Most Djent...really isn't! So I agree it's silly, but it's harmless.

The downside is that it has spawned a lot of Meshuggah clones. But it also means that those that are inclined to, have to try harder to stand out and put a new twist on it, and then it really crosses back over into straight up progressive rock/metal.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you've probably not rushed out to see any "Djent" gigs but having seen Periphery, TesseracT and Monuments live I don't think anyone would say that their tone or style doesn't translate well to a live setting.

And their tones are way more processed than mine (Axe FX and what not). All I ever used in the bedr....erm, studio...was Big Bottom with no post processing. And live, I've had nothing but a JVM410 (and for a few gigs EVH5150, Framus Cobra and a Triple X...borrowing backline is fun!). Long as the notes are the same, who cares haha. Bass down, mids up, rest is in the hands. As they say!

I'm not really a big Meshuggah fan but I don't mind listening to them. I've checked out a bunch of the bands that folks are calling Djent and they all sound the same because like I said, it's given rise to such a generic guitar tone.

I prefer bands who keep things interesting more than just rhythmically (which is all the djent bands seem to have going for them). I love SikTh (rip) and Textures who I don't doubt are partially responsible along with Meshuggah for the thing that people now call Djent. I've been keeping an eye on Aliases (band featuring Pin from SikTh) and have seen people referring to them as Djent but I am hoping it doesn't stick for them.

Djent is not for me. I will stick to Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend, Chimaira, KsE and the like for my metal jollies.

Big SYL fan. Chimaira also, although they haven't done anything to top Impossibility of Reason. Not for me anyway.  Not yet. Watched that 5 hour long studio/documentary DVD of theirs the other night though. Was really cool to see how they work. I got major studio envy.

Aliases are definitely not Djent. They're more Tech I guess. Or widdly as I like to call it. Widdly widdly widdly. They're amazing live though. I played with them in Germany last year, and it pretty much sucked for everyone who had to play after them - they sort of set the standard. I start a tour with them in like two weeks. Should be pretty immense!

I am a stupid big Chimaira fan. I'm actually in the Coming Alive DVD, very briefly when I was hanging out with Mark and Rob after a show in London. I actually flew to Cleveland (I Iive in Scotland) a couple of years ago for Chimaira Christmas 9 and then went and hung out at the practice space with some of the guys after. Such an awesome experience.

Sadly, it was announced that Spicuzza their keyboard/samples guy has left the band......pretty gutted but they have a new album currently being mixed and I can't wait to see them again!

Only thing I'm not sure about Aliases is their singer, but they only have a couple of full tracks out so I will wait see how their album turns out before I make any decisions on them fully. I like We Never Should Have Met though.

Some of the people on that list (including some of the ones I listed) I would say had tones that were were more "infamous" than "legendary"

Cool to see Pat Smear on the list, even if it's only for the Foo Fighters... whoa, I forgot, he was also in Nirvana for a short while...

Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues had a really cool Gibson 345 into a Vox AC 30 sound.

He used some kind of distortion pedal that I'd like to know what it was.

I notice there is no Chimp Spanner mentioned in any of the metal sections yet?

Maybe it's about time after his mention in a Djent Feature in the May 2011 edition of Total Guitar!

Ahh yeah I only found out about this the other day!! Cheers for the mention dude. Had a nice mention in Metal Hammer month before last as well - they had a section on how to get the archetypal 'djent' tone there too. Although they recommended people find an amp with a "big bottom" setting. *facepalm*. Why don't they come to folk like us BEFORE they go to print?

Re: Help me list the legendary guitar tones

The only name I'm really missing is Frank Zappa.

He really had phenomonal tones. In fact he was doing with real amps what we now do with these moddellers.

Using different amps for different sounds, or even using different amps at the same time. He had a custom made switchboard to switch between amps.

Most people don't really dig his music but I really think they must agree that his tones were off the planet.

Re: Help me list the legendary guitar tones

You might want to expand the blues section a little: T-Bone Walker, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Robert Cray, Warren Haynes are some names that seem to be missing. Maybe also Duke Robillard.

Jazz: I'd add Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell. And maybe Marc Ribot.

I hope some of these names are not already suggested, I haven't read alle the messages here.
