What's your Worship Tones??!

Hi Bros. and Sisters in Christ,
I recently purchased a POD XT Live and currently use it for our Praise and Worship service. I use a Fender Strat Highway one and a Fender Amp (forgot the model). I'm trying to experiment on my XTL to get the tomes that we usually hear from bands like Paul Baloche, Lincoln Brewster, Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin and a lot more. I'm aiming to get that crunchy strat/tele tone they have.
Can you give me some tips and if you can share your tone in this forum, that will be useful for everyone.
Thanks and God bless......
Jessie
Jessie,
Welcome to the group!
For me, I use my X3 Live direct into the board at church. I use the Ac30 TB model alot to get some of those tones. The Matchless, Fender Deluxe or Twin, and Cali models will also get you close. The Plexi Variac model is used almost exclusively by Lincoln Brewster in his setup. You have to play with the eq a bit and try some of the stomps with each - Tubescreamer works well with the Fender models. I find that sometimes you can just crank the TB to get some good tones.
Some tips:
- Try stay as clear as possible with your tone, not too muddy with the overdrive
- Use some decent reverb to make your sound bigger and full
- Some nice delay + reverb = very nice worship atmosphere
- Be aware your single coil Strat will bite much harder on the treble side - adjust your amp models accordingly so your tone is not too harsh for the congregation/or tone controls on Strat
- Try running direct into the board... see if this works better for you

Wow thank a lot for the info, those are very useful. So, if you plug your X3 direct to PA, what do you use as your monitor? Do you use earphones or you set a monitor in front of you?
I think I will spend some hours tweaking this machine, such great and unlimited variations from POD XTL/X3s.
Thanks again,
God bless....
No problem....
We use the Aviom personal mixer system, so I just use some ear buds to hear everything.
Have fun.... it can be endless!
The first step in trying to nail the tones of your favorite bands is to know what gear the guitarist uses. I know LB uses a strat into a X3 Live. His DVD talks about his guitar specs, and he gives away his patch settings on his website. Daniel Carson (Chris Tomlin) is pretty much a Les Paul guy. Casting Crown guitarist uses a PRS a lot of the time. I thinks the best first step to nailing a tone is to figure out if you need to use a guitar with single coils vs. humbuckers. Nailing tone is a life-long pursuit, enjoy!
Thanks a lot for the info...however, i dont have funds to buy all those expensive gears and guitars. I am aiming to imitate their tones but also, having my own tone to be original. its just a matter of sounder better with my current gears and not overspending to get myself better gears. I will not play better by just having these expensive guitars, but I want to sound good though...hehehe.
Thanks for the info...
Hello everyone,
I would have made this a new discussion but for some reason when im at my computer at work it wont let me so I just replied to this one.
This may be a dumb question to ask but ill ask anyway.
On the Lincoln Brewster website there is a place to download his patches. There is a x3 zip file to download, will this work for my x3 live? or is this just for the x3?
Also there is a raw x3 zip file, im assuming I will download the first one I mentioned instead of this one correct?
Thanks in advance,
Jason
Yep, it'll work for all POD X3's. You'll have to use the GearBox software to load them up.
Also, the RAW version of the file is exactly the same as what's in the ZIP file, so either one will be fine.
I find that it was easiest to transfer the Lincoln Brewster tones using Line Monkey as I needed a patch.
I agree Line 6 Monkey was way easier to upload brewster patches to my pod as opposed to the gearbox software.
Agreed... I have a love/hate relationship with Gearbox. Line 6 needs to retool this Gearbox/Monkey thing. I like Gearbox for Custom Tone to just load up some patches to check them out, but overall I find it too clunky in how it can really mess up your patches if you are not careful.
my two cents....
I didn't want to start a new discussion, but wanted to share this.
I have used an X3 live for the last couple of months while my old XT Live sits in a corner of my music room and collects dust. This week instead of setting up my X3 after gertting my stuff home from church, on a whim I set up my XT Live. It seems to have a more warm organic sound than my X3, and there are a couple of patches that I just can't seem to duplicate on my X3. I had considered selling the XT but have decided totally against that!
I sometimes think that if my XT had the output volume up on the face and had the XLR outputs, I would maybe go back to using it, and will probably put it in to service this week.
Just wanted to share about an old friend. ..Hope you all had a blessed weekend praising the Lord!
Strato..
Hey Stratotron
Had the same experience with my old XTL. Seemed to have a bit more warmth than the X3L. Even better with a "Bad Monkey" in front of the XTL. Maybe my ears are deteriorating? After all they are 60 years old! Been playing too long with the earphones turned up too loud.
Great to hear all you young guys getting involved with your gear in the music ministry of your congregations. Having been the lead pastor of an Aussie congregation for the past 25 years and, seeing the revolution in praise music relevant to the culture around us, is encouraging. But whatever we do in our music, it needs to have Jesus and the gospel at its centre and to recognise that while we strive for excellence in what we do, we should never divert the attention of our congregations to ourselves but to Him who rescued us by grace and allowed us a part to play in bringing in the lost and encouraging His church.
I always appreciated the helpful advice on the Line 6 Forum and this discussion group makes it even better.
Bless all you guys!
Peter
Geriatric,
Thank you for your kind words, yes I am one of the young guys, I am only 58. Spent 20 years playing in bars, sobered up in 92, born again in 95, contimued in bars until 97 thinking I could be a light in a dark place. The reality is that if your band isn't selling drinks, you aren't working there anymore! I had to quit being part of the problem, so my wife and I prayed about the loss of income knowing that God would honor a commitment to Him. We never even missed the dollars..Praise God!
I don't need to tell you what a blessing it is to play electric guitar in worship to the Lord at my (our) age. Not to mention I want to personally thank Australia for sharing Hillsongs with us! We rountinely include a Hillsongs tune in our worship. Not only are they anointed woship, but technically speaking, there are usually at least 3 electric guitar parts to choose from, so I just grab whichever one floats to the top of the mix!
Back to the XT. I was going to use the XT this week, but I got the set list yesterday AM and we are doing Eagles Wings by Hillsongs and there is a flute part that I am going to use my guitar synth on (send the synth pickup to the X3 aux input) and the magnetic PUs on that guitar are a might dark. I don't want to do a guitar switch so I am using that guitar for the whole set and need the brightness of the X3.
Blessing to you Bro,
Strato.... (Don)
Hello bros and sisters in Christ,
Well, I don't have ax, but a pocket pod. Wow what an amazing little gadget that is. For worship I use a Tonelab SE, pretty old already but it gives me a good tone. I think we are so blessed to live in this time where technology has come a long way for us musicians, that we can even record our very own album right at home and post it online for the entire world to hear. How awesome is that? Praise God. Just this past Sunday, I got a chance to hear Christ Tomlin for the first time at the harvest crusade, and wow! God has blessed this brother with so much annointment, his music, humble demeanor truly made this the most awesome Harvest crusade ever! Specially during the firworks show, the songs he sang were just amazing. If you guys get a chance to see the video of this past Sunday's harvest crusade at the Angels Stadium in Anaheim California, you will be so blessed. I have never heard Pastor Laurie be so funny. people just flocked to the altar call, well field call, I bet there were hundreads of Angels in the outfield. ;-).
Well, guys I noticed he played a black telecaster, do any of you guys know what bridge pickup he was using? From the screen views, it seemed that he was using a Seymour Duncan Lil 59 on his Tele Bridge. Well, thanks in advance. I love that pickup, I have it in my Tele, and guys I truly recommend it.
God bless you all and keep praising the King!
Hi Bros and Sis in Christ jesus,
I was suprised this thread will have a discussion like this, its overwhelming to know that there are a lot of Christians out there who are still on fire on serving the Lord. I just pray that the Lord will bless you all more abundantly than before.
Now back to X3 and XTL, i love my XTL, but currently, my friend is using X3, and he told me that X3 is much better than XTL, which is, from what I can see is it does looke better, more modern and cool than XTL. But from your response, your saying that XTL sounds a little better than X3.
You guys just made me love my XTL more....hehehehe. I'd rather keep this baby, and buy X3 later for back-up....lol.
God bless.....
Jessie
OK , I finally have a moment to put my 2 cents worth.
I started attending a new church called Bridges Covenant Church in Tavares Florida. This was from an invitation from a friend. I had not been going to church in over 25 years, except to bring Mom when she came for her yearly Visit. I can not believe how much its changed my life, not only spiritually but musically. I had also stopped playing guitar 20 years ago. Now I play every Sunday service and have several great guitars, Schecter C1 Elite, Line 6 300 and 700 and a Line 6 X3 Live peddle and 2 Line 6 amps (spider jam rocks). I have only scratched the surface and I am using mostly tones that I find on this community or the Web. I cant compare the sounds from the older XT , but I do believe that with some work and experimenting there should be no sound I cant get from my X3 Live.
I thank the Lord every day for all my blessings. especially for being able to be a part of the music ministry that leads 80 to 120 people every Sunday in to Praise and Worship every Sunday
God Bless
Jim C.
Jessie,
That is a tough call. The primary reason I went for the X3 was the XLR outputs. As far as the X3 being "better", I think it is built a little tougher, and it does have the dual tone and the seperate Auxillary input, that can be split between the dual tone functions or assigned to the outputs by itself. For instance, you could plug your acoustic in to the Aux input and you electric in to the main guitar in and write patches for either. I am using that function now when I use my synth access guitar.
The dual tone stuff, I use but still struggle with becuase I edit stuff on the fly in rehearsal and editing a dual tone function during a song run through makes my brain sweat!
There are a couple of patches that I have in the XT that I haven't been able to duplicate totally in the X3. One for instance I used for the song Hossana by Paul Baloche is a very U2 type dotted eighth note echo thing. The X3 gets darn close but there is a body to it in the XT , I don't know quite how to describe it. There is an echo patch that I use in the song Stronger by Hillsongs that combines a whole note repeat and a triplet in the fade, you hit a note and it sort of gallups away. Once again the patch in the XT is organic and perfect, and the X3 is darn close!
I originally downloaded my XT patches on to the X3 and they seem to have lost a little in the translation, so I set them up side by side and manually entered the values from the XTin to the X3 patches.
All this to say, I love the X3, and I do use it exclusively. Seriously if I can imagine a guitar tone, the X3 will allow me to create it, but will never get rid of my XT!
I will confess also to be thinking about getting to rack mounted Pro version. Ilike the idea of the controls being up where I can get my hands on them and the pedals on the ground to navigate.
Anybody out there use one? The weak link in my estimation seems to be the data cable hooking the unit tothe peadls. What say you?
Thanks and God bless you!
Strato (Don)
Oh Yeah this weeks list:
Beautiful one. Tim Hughes
Yours is the Kingdom. Hillsongs
Lord I will Bow to You.
Here I am to Worship/Call. Hillsongs again!
I know its a thought call. Actually, its just me trying to convince myself I don't need an X3....but you know what...I think I do!!!!![]()
I praise God for my X3 Live. Killer tones that I can make adjustments to and save without having to worry about knobs getting turned accidentally during packing up or setting, and the consistency and quality of sound is just a dream come true for me. Of course, I was a bassist/lead vocalist for 30 years, and after watching 30 years of tweaker guitarists spending endless hours tweeking their sound and never once heard one say "There! That's the tone I've been looking for and I'm going to save it!", I am not one of those kinds of guitarists. I'm grateful that someone else already did the tweeking for me and that the Pod X3 Live has every tone I need in order to sound far better than I really am, for any genre of music I play on a given day.
What I'm trying to say is that if you buy an X3, I doubt that you will be sorry and in fact, quite the contrary will be true, I suspect. You'll be so grateful for it. Have fun with your new X3 when you get it, Chris! :-D
Time to pump some new life into this thread and start posting some HD tones here! I will shortly, I hope you will too!
Hi Don;
Thanks for sharing your story.
I'm 53 and have been playing P & W for a long time.
Its great to see another brother in Christ, serving God with passion and energy.

Peter,I loved what you said about it all being Christ centered. My "go to" clean tone I use on my XTL is 31b, which on the display looks like 316. I have had several people ask me about it and I can tell them that because of John 3:16 I am able to be sharing the gospel at all let alone the privilege that has been afforded me by the birth, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior to play and sing His praises.
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and comments.
Dolan
What a great statement about being Christ centered!
I have found that as long as I sensitive to the presence of the Holy Spirit, what I play on Sunday often differs from what I rehearsed ealier in the week. My first lesson came the first time I played in a praise team. On the drive to church I made a reference to playing as being a performace. I broke a string tuning up. It is not performace. It is praise. A couple of times I had managed to successfully rehearse a cool lick or two. Come Sunday, there was a little voice saying, "No". I forced the issue, and I totally blew it. Since then, I try to remain sensitive to what is needed in order for the congregation get deeper into worship. It doesn't matter if I have to rock a little harder, or tone down significantly, I do it.
I just try to get as close as possible to whatever cover of a song it is, or who's version of it we are playing..I look at it like this .. God compelled our worship leader to choose what particular songs he picks for the week... I Honor God by making it the most accurate to that version as I can..to serve His needs and what He has compelled that will invoke His spirit...
But you know what I found out.. you just do your best that is all God wants,, and the congregation is not going to complain ,, unless you just really butcher a song...;)
I take a different view. I already know that I will never be able to achieve covers that even come close to either the orginal version,or the cover version that inspired me - Tree 63's version of Amazing Grace falls into the latter category. What I do is try and take 'ownership' of the song and present it the best that I can,in the style I feel is most appropriate for both message/sermon and what the congregation needs. I have rehearsed songs with distortion, but come Sunday end up playing it with a clean or acoustic sound.
The best example of "butchering" was a recording of a worship leader who forgot to take off his capo leaving all the other musicians floundering
. I admit I have been caught, but only one or two notes/chords into the song I knew what was wrong.
And you are correct, you do your best, and do it prayerfully. I haven't had complaint so far.
.
Hi everyone my name is Adam, and this is totally a blessing to have this here. I've been playing on the worship team for 5 years now-- going from a POD 2.0 to an XTL and finally now to an X3. Been using a variax 500 & 600 all the time. Our worship leader like to say we have "ROWDY" P & W. we just love seeing Jesus get all the glory and it really is such a privlige to bring people to that place. As far a worship tones, I'd like to post the latest one I made for the song "Awsome God" from Free Chapel ..(.man that is such a fun song to play). It's a dual tone for the X3live. Looking foward to hanging out with you all!!!
Adam
I've started a section in my website for Pod Tones, go check it out, download them if you want, and comment. If you have tones that you love, please, host them on a site like Media Fire and post a link to the download in the comments section on my site.
Just got my HD unit. Only had time to workout some very basic tones over the weekend in time for Sunday. I'm currently finishing up my go to clean patch, I'll post it here when its finished.
Here is what it consists of right now:
I'm still in the process of fine tuning the EQ's, FX output levels, and the mic and cab models. I try to make most of my patches friendly for both of my guitars (strat and Ibanez S-Classic)... not too trebely for the strat and not too muddy for the humbuckers in the Ibanez.
Here's my clean patch. Chord work and harmonizing parts done with an Ibanez S-Classic, lead done with a strat. Signal path was guitar(s) -> HD 300 -> USB to PC -> Audacity. The only "fixing up" I did in Audacity was to do the fade out and to normalize the whole track. I didn't have to mix any tracks because I did the whole piece using the looper on the HD. I'll post more patches as I complete them.
HI
For reg Church worship...I use 4 basic tones...(HD 500...X3 POD)
Clean with delay...Chorus...Blackface
Clean with delay..chorus..and added crunch....Blackface....clean DR Z
OD tone for heaver backing.....Marshall/Treadplate
OD / distortion for added sustain and power... with added delay and chorus as needed... Treadplate
OM
Here's a tone I created for Worship. I've set boosts up on f4 and a multi switch to switch the delay to a U2-ish delay on F3 on the last 2 patches. There's an EQ so you can so you can dial it in to your church without changing the amp settings.
I did some more work on the tones and included a Clean Tone. I tweaked these while sitting back at the board and playing through the FOH PA system so I think the tone may sound a little less bright if playing at home but should transfer well playing live. Also I should note that I play single coil pickups so if you play with humbuckers you may need to brighten them a little or dial back the noise gate.
Guys, I just went from Seymour Duncan Hotrails to EMG live pickups. My volume levels are all over the place. Does anyone know of any Rock tones that are designed specifically for active pickups? I love Satriani tones, and I confess I haven't even gone online to see if there is a section for active pickup tones. I'm here at work and checked my email, and here you all are, so I thought I'd ask.
I know God is blessing your ministries! Keep up the awesome worship!
Don
Why the pickup change when you have a POD (I assume)?
I did myself and soundguys a favor by just settling on 4 patches, with a mix of drive, modulation and delay effects that can cover 99% of what I need to do. I spent a fair amount of time recording them direct through an interface and adjusting levels so they all have about the same basic output when clean, and the boost is more or less the same - at least, it's not going to surprise anyone. And, I could get away with 2 or 3 patches, honestly - 4 is just for an additional option if the mood hits me. The main thing is to "normalize" your patches for the amp/PA and space you are playing, then control everything from the guitar and volume pedal, if you want.
If you have more than one guitar, and they are *really* different, you may need another set of patches. I find I can switch between a Strat and LP with this set, though I have to roll back the LP guitar volume, or use the volume pedal a bit to keep it really clean, as it wants to quickly get into crunch/grit mode.
Can you post your tones please?
I wasn't sure how to do it, so they are in the HD400 section of CustomTone.com. Sort on "Style" and look for P&W - they are the only 4. I believe you can open them in the Edit app w/o actually needing an HD400, so you can see how they are set, since it appears most folks have HD500s around here. Here's the basics (not going to list all detailed settings):
Amp: Brit P-75
FX1: Tube Drive
FX2: Phaser
FX3: Digital Delay w/mod
Reverb: Hall
KoolAid Blues (based on Whiskey Blues):
Amp: Blackface 'Lux
FX1: Screamer
FX2: Analog Chorus
FX3: Tape Echo
Reverb: Plate
Machine Gum (based on Machine Gun):
Amp: Brit Plexi J-45
FX1: Facial Fuzz
FX2: U-Vibe
FX3: Tape Echo Studio
Reverb: Plate
Toe Jam (based on American Jam):
Amp: Blackface Double
FX1: Classic Distortion
FX2: Bias Tremolo
FX3: Lo Res Delay
Reverb: Plate
P.S. These are a "work-in-progress" and the files I uploaded might not be precisely what I've got on POD right now, but it's more or less what I'm working from. I keep these in a single bank, A - D, and usually find a patch, pickup and guitar tone setting that will work. I have all effects, except reverb, off by default, though it's probably over half the time that I'll switch an effect or 2 on when I actually play with any of these. I don't use any other effects.
There are a lot of good tones on it and many on the download site. My fav by far is the crossroades tone. Funny thing is I have a clapton strat and it sounds by far the best on it. The tele and lp aren't nearly as nice.

I have often worshipped the tones that come from Fender Bassmand and Vox AC30 amplifiers, but I don't think that's what you're looking for. ![]()
Sorry, couldn't help it with the title of the thread.
Back to you.
Cheers,
Crusty
Crusty, I don't know if anyone ever responded to your reply, but I periodically come across it, and it always cracks me up.

Strato.
Hey guys. Well I've been rockin the pocketpod for now. I put it in front of a Bugera V5 amp. I play a Strat and my main sound has been the VoxAC30 setting with light tremolo to thicken my sound. I also use a MXR Carbon Copy delay whenever I need to throw in some leads. I try to keep it simple. But one day I will have my Pod HD....One day... ![]()
I'm all for simple, which is why the HD (400) works for me. Honestly, I was driven to it by not being able to get the sound guys to find a level for the direct out of my little Tech 21 amp that didn't sound like poo, but I've really learned to like having patches with different levels of drive, overdrive, whatever, so I no longer have to fiddle with knobs on the pedal board, or have 2 delay pedals with different settings.
The many, different amp models are "icing" as they say, but since I had to have amp modeling, and I wasn't sure whether the more limited modelers from Tech 21 (e.g., Blonde, et al), would work any better than the amp I had, I felt this was the lowest risk "investment" for what I needed. It's worked really well, even though I could probably get away with simply one model, for P&W. For instance, this week I'll use a Deluxe Reverb model on most of the songs. I only switch to a couple others because that's where I have the tremolo effect (with the Twin), and another song I just went with the patch I used last time (I keep notes, so I don't have to think too hard about it
)
P.S. If you look over on the POD HD board, you will see that there are some very not-so-happy users of the POD with tube amps. I really think its strength is in going direct. If you need an amp, then make sure you have one that can get pretty flat, or has an effects loop that the POD HD can work well with, and you test it out with the POD before you buy, is my recommendation.
Wow dude, thanks for the info! ![]()
I have a Marshall vs65r with a effects loop but it gets to be a pain dragging to and from church. ![]()
We don't have a "sound guy" and the PA setup is really kinda bad. I don't even bother going into the PA. But I may experiment with an A/B/Y box. Split the signal to both the PA and my amp. Using my amp as a sort of monitor as well.
I also find myself switching too much between the amp models. Sometimes confusing myself! lol That's why I try to stick to minimum patches. I fiddle too much! lol
I'm struggling with getting my HD 300 to sound good at church. I have some tones that sound fantastic at home but when I plug in at church they don't sound the same. Often times the high notes with some distortion get a bit funky and I'm getting frustrated. I'm pretty much a novice at this stuff so I apologize. I'm playing a pretty crummy strat which may be part of the problem but even that sounds better at home. At home I'm playing through a Fender Princeton 112. At church I'm playing straight through the PA system plugged into a direct box. Could it be the settings on the sound board? Any help would be appreciated. Also any good tones for the 300 would be great.
First, it's never going to sound the same unless you are playing through the same equipment at home as you have at church. But, here is how I've gotten to a reasonably happy place with my POD HD400.
1. I only listen through headphones at home, with the mode switch set to AMP, so the FX switches simply toggle the effects. If you don't have high impedance headphones, try to find a set that is over 32 ohms, at least. You will go deaf, at that, and it's probably going to sound brighter and louder than the PA, but it's a starting place.
2. At church, make sure the output mode is set to STUDIO, and use a single XLR (left) output direct to the PA. No DI required. (You will have to give up stereo effects, unless you have 2 PA channels to play with.)
3. Adjust the LEVEL control to make the PA folks happy that they have sufficient volume control (which they should leave alone) over your channel. Get your tape, silver marker, whatever, out and mark that level so you stay consistent, week to week. (My level is straight up, 12 o'clock.)
I would start with some of the basic Fender tones, Deluxe or Twin. You can try the ones I listed, earlier in this thread. Supposedly you just need to rename the file extension from .h4e to .h3e, and they are compatible (not so with HD500 tones).
Gotta chime in,
This is pretty common and the cure for me, was to encounter-read the Flecther Munson study. It explains why your rig sounds good at home but when you crank it up, it can sound harsh-brittle and wooden all at the same time. Basically, a "smile" eq curve at a low volume will flatten out with the high freq going off the chart at higher volumes. As a general rule, any tone that I set up at home, I scoop the upper mids out of, so in other words, I write patches at home that sound a little dull and they brighten right up on the gig, I mean at church.
If you do a search on the Line 6 site, you will be able to find an article that explains this. Encountering the FM study totally re-vamped my realtionship with effects. They now do what I want them to do.
I went to GC yesterday and traded a couple of amps in on an HD500, which is in the mail as we speak. I come here as an X3L user by the way of XTL. My X3 carries around 30 song-specific patches that I will be working with re-creating in the HD500. Since I understand the editing on the X3, I am pretty comfortable with editing on the fly and feel I need the same kind of comfort-confidence with the HD before risking being a HUGE distraction during a service!
I will be on site with a lot of questions-comments in the near future.
PS: The FM thing is so common, I am surprised that the Folks at Line 6 haven't included a "loudness" button that just fixes this condition?
Blessings, Strato.
Here's a link to what is currently called Equal Loudness Contour.
From my reading, this (ELC) is based on the F-M study, and is the latest (2003) "spec." As Stratotone points out, the curve flattens as volume goes up. That means that the lows and highs that needed a bit more boost at lower volume to create an "equal loudness" perception in the user do not need as much boost at higher volume. Or, conversely, if you don't change any of your EQ settings, and add power, the mids will become more prominent. In any case, what you hear at a home volume will not, and cannot sound the same when you take that same sound/EQ and send it out through a 500W PA to fill a hall that's a lot bigger than your bedroom (or space between your ears, if using headphones).
Of course, if you play an amplifier at home "dimed" and then stand in front of that same amplifier at the same setting, it may sound very much the same to you. However, if it's mic'd and pumped up to another level, the sound folks will likely need to adjust the EQ going to the house (if you don't make changes) to have the guitar coming out of the PA not sound markedly different. Ideally, you have a sound system and a sound crew that can tweak the tone coming out of the PA to fit into the mix, without you needing to do anything. Me, I can't hear the house, except in reflection (and with Shure IEMs stuffed in my ears during the service, I don't actually hear that), so don't worry about it
.
Assuming you don't have a personal monitor like an Aviom, I would consider finding some small amp (6" or smaller) that can be set fairly flat (EQ), to put on a stand and point in my face, that works at the volume I can practice with at home. Then, use the DUAL mode output of the POD HD, and get a tone setup that sounds consistent between headphones and the amp. Send the STUDIO (XLR) signal to the board, and let someone else find the right EQ for that source to get the PA/house close to what comes out of your amp-monitor. If you have to, do some recording of the service and help adjust the guitar channel EQ.
To piggyback "stillfiddlin's" comment, I will add as support..
My rig is a 50 watt solid state-solid back Marshall with a 12" greenback, that I set in front of me on a tilted back stand, aimed away from the congregation. I send 1-1/4" out to the Marshall. I made up a couple of XLR x 1/4" cables that I run from the X3 to the parallel ins of a DI box and send the XLR from that to the board. (This setup because no matter how I panned the stereo delay, I only got one side of it out of the XLRs. The 1/4" was panned center. I use the stereo delay alot such as "You Alone Can Rescue", "How Deep Is The Love", "Stronger" to name a few. Now I send a summed signal so panning is never an issue.) So , in addition, my POD is set to "Combo Front" which allows the user to trim the output to match amp bias-tone. Basically, I will crank it up and hammer a chord and tune the focus control until I like it.
I did a search on the web and got a guitar neck frequency chart, so if a particular note "pings", I can look it up on the chart and it helps me to tune my EQ. I don't have a great memory for frequency numbers beyond A 440!
I also have a great working relationship with our sound tech who is assigned to our "team". We have had the FM discussion and I trust her comments on my guitar tone.
And I will add that in my music room at home, I have a PA system for playback,so I have the liberty to, warn my wife and my mother-in-law and check tones at World War III volume.

First, I love this thread! Second, to add to the never ending struggle to get tones to sound good at church vs home is one I'm constantly battling. I have a 3 way battle at that. 1. They don't put any of the FOH mix in our IEM's because they think people would be messing with our level and such if they did (which we would ;-) ) so they're all mixed individually and even though I'm using SCL-5's I always sound a bit thin and tinny in my ears. 2. Our sound people tend to boost vocals, keys, and acoustic guitar way to high in the mix week in and week out. I record all our services on my Zoom H4n and sometimes I can't even hear myself. It sort of depressing considering all the time I put into creating my tones, praticing, etc. I sound great in my ears during the service and go to listen to playback and don't even here myself. 3. Often our mix that goes to the web feed is mixed so sterile, sometimes no verb on the vocals that it's hard to even listen to.
I have an X3 as well as the HD500 and I have to say although I miss the Variac'd Plexi and being able to see the frequency graph for the EQ in Gearbox I find the HD a lot easier to adjust on the fly. I have 3 quick fixes to get patches tweaked: 1. Find an hour or that you can work with your sound person and plug the HD in directly to the board at the back of the house and dial in your patches right there. Make notes of what adjustments had to be made to get them to sound good. 2. On that note use the patch you have set up at home and add the mid-focus EQ and use that to shape the end tone. This way when you get back home just turn it off and it will sound good at home, turn EQ on at church. Do this with several patches and see if your adjustments to the EQ are similar. 3. If you don't have the liberty of time alone with the PA and your HD has the looper, or you have a separate looper, loop 30 seconds or so of different playing styles clean picking, strumming, power chords, lead fills and then go out and listen to it over the PA before the rehearsal starts and make some adjustments.
Here are some tones I recently used that I liked. On "Again I Say Rejoice" F4 is a clean boost using an FX loop so you'll need a patch cord going from your send to the return to get a pure clean boost. On "Shout To The King" the expression pedal controls the Drive so I push it down for the main riff and and bring back down for the verses and choruses. On "Our God" there are two patches on for the single note melody that is played through the whole song and the heavy patch for the musical bridge and ending. I also have Variax models set in these patches so if you have one they'll work well with them.
I use an XLR Y adapter out of the L and R XLR Outs to a single XLR direct to the board this way I don't have to worry about the panning of my patches. Let me know what you think of the patches. Thanks and God Bless!
Well, if I had a 500, I'd give them a whirl...
But I don't. However, I like the idea of going back to the board and plugging in there. I'm going to try that next time I get a chance.
I have to say, tonight, we had a "kind of" unplugged rehearsal. No drums, no bass, so the sound guy was told not to bother coming to rehearsal, and so I brought the PRRI, and we stood around the grand piano, playing and singing. What fun. Much as I love the HD, I do miss having the real sound right there at your knees.
Here are some more tones from the past weekend. Set A Fire is a rich bluesy Lead Tone with Eric Johnson/Joe Bonamassa influences. Time Has Come is for the Jesus Culture song and is using the F4 FX Loop clean boost method. Same goes for the Lincoln Brewster "Love The Lord" patch. Enjoy, please post your feedback or improvements!
Here's a video with me on lead guitar so you can hear many of the tones that I uploaded. I did however in error hit the delay switch midway through Again I Say Rejoice, but listen to the beginning of the song for the correct tone for the song, DOH!

I'm having a problem with the video player playing the video. Is there something I need to install?
I don't know specifically about what you may need for the video player. Try going to the main page and just clicking the "Watch" icon http://www.covechurch.org
Got the video player to work! Must be something at my work computer. The tones sounded good man! I just need to get some time with the PA to dial mine in and my monitor mix.
I tried to download the tones but the 400 software would not let me open them. Not sure what is going on.
Hmmm maybe the 400 and 500 tones are not compatible with each other. If that's the case download the HD Edit 500 program and open them with that and then build the same tone in your 400 would be my best suggestion. You might try changing the extenstion of the file from .h5e to .h4e and maybe you'll get lucky?!
While there are not too many detailed setup info given, y'all may be interested in comments about the HD 500 in another forum: New Line 6 HD w Bose?

New guy here, but long time player. Glad to see I am not the oldest, but not by much
.I returned to church in 1991 after a very long absence and started playing in praise teams in '96-97. The current team that I play in is cool. Not long after I started at the church, there was a guy who lead worship alone. Turns out he hadn't led worship in several years. I asked him if he wanted another guitarist, so he invited me for a small jam. We fit togther a pair of favourite gloves. In his words, he got to do what he wanted to, and he got to hear (from me) what he wated to hear. It is still like that. When we play together it feels good.
I have an XT Live. I bought it not long after they came out, maybe a year or so after. I was lucky enough to catch one on sale for $100 off. Never seen the price that low since. I currently use a Squire Affinity, HSS, 20th anniversay model, and British racing green. Output from the XT Live goes through a DI box to feed the soundboard, and my Peavy 40W which I use as a personal monitor. I don't sing. I use two main sounds, one with distortion, the other clean. The distortion sound is based on Ozzy Osbourne and is a combination of Jake E Lee and Randy Rhoads. It is a chorused distortion. The clean sound is based on the opening chords from Dark Side of the Moon. I have recently been tweaking a Jimmy Page patch, but I can't quite get it to sound like I want it to. I also have a handful of less used patches, but they are more geared towards acoustic style songs - lighter on the chorus basically.
I just bought a Variax 500 off Ebay and I have only had it for two days. I have a whole new learning curve with this guitar. I updated the flash memory successfully. I have only had a quick glance at the workbench software. I still have a lot of playing and exploring of the guitar to do before I can make any definitive evaluations of it, But I am beginning to like the "Lester" models.
I was pleased to find this forum. And just as pleased to be here.
Welcome.
This forum has been a wealth of information for me.
Along with a welcome, I just wanted to comment, I started off with the XT Live, moved to the X3Live and now use the HD500. In my most humble opine, I believe that the XTL of all 3 rigs had the best effects. Much of what I get to play is very effects driven, timed delays, timed roto vibe and such. As I recall the XTL allowed me to nail those timed effects right on the nose. The effects changed slightly with the X3L and with quite a bit of noodling, I was able to grab the same effects with the X3, however, they just didn't have the same "life" for lack of a description. The X3L also had a brightness that I had to work to overcome. The HD500 overall has a better sound quality, but for some reason some of my favorite effects were left out or were modified to the point that it is labor intensive to set the values. For instance, I used the XT stereo delay to play the intro to "Stronger" by Hillsongs. It was a simple matter of setting the feebback levels and adjusting the offset until it had the timed delay with the triplet fade. Now with the HD, I have had to set the delay to 1/8 and dotted 1/8 and mess with balances, and it is close, but with the XT, I could play with the recording and the patch I used would disappear in to the mix.
I will say though, I like the navigation and the file (patch) management on the HD, and the HD has other effects that I have now grown to use and love.
Any way, all this to say, I liked my XT and welcome.
Blessings, Strato
Ahh, I might have you. You seem 80's and I' more 70's. lol! I'm 47. I like the podhd500. But I just got an ipod and in the ever ongoing march to carry less gear to gigs I'm experimenting with an ipad with ampkit on it along with the alesis io dock. I do a lot of spring - summer solo gigs at festivals and tear down time is very tight. So I have vocals, guitar and tracks (sometimes keys) and I'm trying to rig it all into the ipad / io dock and maybe garage band for mixing or something.
Still using the hd500, just looking for less yet to carry.
Welcome and keep rocking for Jesus brother!
