POD XT Live with Marshall JMP-1

Hi everyone..

My first post - I know there has been some discussion on this topic before but none have quite answered my question.

I have been using an XTL for gigs (direct to PA, no backline) since it came out and after many hours, months, years of tweaking I think I've mastered the unit and can get some decent sounds, BUT at the end of the day it does lack the feel and dynamics only a valve amp can provide. (BTW IMO the HD series is better in terms of live dynamics but still not quite good enough for me)

I'm now looking to just use the XTL for FXs and midi patch changes so was think of patching in a Marshall JMP-1 (midi valve pre-amp) to replace the amp and cab sims from the XTL, I used a JMP back in the 90s and it sounded great - but I'm not sure if is possible and if it is the best way to patch this all together. I was thinking of this:

Guitar - JMP-1 input - JMP1 FX send to XTL input - XTL outputs (L & R) to JMP1 FX (send and return L & R) & finally speaker emulater from JMP-1 to mixer (L & R)

I will of course turn off the amp and cab sims in the XTL

also for midi patch changes go midi out of XTL to midi in of JMP-1

(Oh, I know a mic'd up valve amp is prob the best way but in my current job having a backline is not an option, it has to go direct to PA.)

Any thoughts, better solutions would be great or am I barking up the wrong tree here?

Thanks...

    Hey popofages,

I think that is a great setup for your needs. I can't think of any other suggestions, looks like you got it all figured out and ready to rock.

I will leave the thread open for future contributions from the community.

The only thing I'd be on the lookout for is the output level the JMP-1 clipping the input of the PODxt Live.

The 1/4" in on the PODxt Live was designed to "see" (or "hear", if you will) an instrument-level signal and not a line-level signal which most preamps put out.

There is a "Pad" switch for the PODxt Live's input, so you have the option of attenuating the signal with that switch.

I can't remember if there's an option to output the signal at the JMP-1's effect loop send output to instrument level or not. If so, I'd recommend setting it to that level. If not, I guess you'll be at the mercy of line-level output going into the PODxt Live and determining if it's too hot or acceptable for your tone needs.

That is the only thing that popped into my head after reading your thread. Hope the info helps.
