If you want to use the POD X3 Live for amp modeling I would suggest using a guitar amp model with no cab and mic model in combination with the Stack Power amp output mode. Try either line or amp to see which sound best in your rig.
If you would like to use the POD X3 Live for FX only and your amp for its tone, then I would suggest to not use any amp or cab model and only fx in combination with the stack power amp output mode. You will then connect your guitar directly to the input on your amp, then connect the FX loop send to the input on the POD X3 Live, and finally connect the left mono output of the X3 Live to the FX return on the amp. Try either line or amp to see which sound best in your rig.
Run the POD X3 Live at full channel and master volume to ensure no loss of signal.

thanks a lot for the info, i believe the first paragraph is useful because im not running an amplifier with a preamp section, its only a rackmount power amplifier to amplify the pod amp models into my cab. the amp is a Mesa Coliseum 300 to be exact. so i have no need for the 4 cable method, but it would be useful if i had an amp head.
also, don't you think that there will be feedback running the channel and master volumes on full?
i typically run all my channels at 80 percent and my master output about the same.

If there was feedback then you would adjust the master volume of rackmount power amp to accommodate as well as move back from the amp if possible. In addition, you do not have to run the POD X3 at 100% channel and master, that was just a suggestion as a starting point to ensure a strong clean signal.
