They would seem to benefit just about any situation.....anyone got a clue?
rags, The neck inserts that your post is about can be very helpful for certain neck to body problems. The first-order benfits would be a more securely mounted and stabilized neck. Secondary benfits would also include improved and precise results when tilting and shimming the neck if one has such a need to do so. I myself have used similar systems on several fenders in the past with very good results, but not on a Variax. What are your intentions, are you having a problems with your variax ?, if so, whats the trouble. Please keep the community informed.
Sorry for the delay.
I recently purchased a Warmoth 24-3/4" conversion neck for my Variax 300. I have small hands, I'm 46 and just starting to develop osteoarthritis, so I'm looking to make things easier for me. My problem is I when I used the "Neck Builder" page @ warmoth, I failed to catch the notice about the neck bolt holes. I didn't check the "no holes box" and the neck is drilled to the Fender Spec. THe holes in the 300 do not line up with the holes in the neck. I was so stoked when I got it and just as crushed when I realized what I had done
I know this neck will play like butter; I can slice cheese thin enough to let daylight through...I shaved with it several times and it's still got a nice edge on it.<that's me coping right there.>... It is a maple fingerboard, compound 10"-16" radius, Wizard profile, Planet Waves Locking/Auto Trim Tuners and the biggest stainless steel frets Warmoth has. It is a sweet neck for sure.
I have to either relocate the neck bolts in my 300 body to match the neck, or get a "Fender Spec" body and modify it to accomodate the guts of a 300. I figured the inserts will help keep the neck in "swappable" condition until I settle on a final design. My big plan is a 100% variax/midi guitar....no mag pups....it's 2011 and I'm looking forward. I know I want to go digital...there's no going back to mag pups for me....I just really dig the variety I get with the Variax: I am totally drinking the kool-aid on this and it's good!
So that's my embarassing story. I'm sure someone somewhere will want to chime in....so c'mon, this is the Line6 BRAIN TRUST.....
gimme advice or call me a yahoo...I'm good either way.
rags, I have a friend that also forgot to check the (no holes) box, theres no need to fear. Here are a few popular hole filling methods: fill holes with wood glue and tap in dowels same size as holes, clean up excess glue, flush cut dowels, let dry, place neck heel firmly into body pocket, make sure neck is in proper alignment with body and drill new holes. You also can fill the holes with wood friendly epoxy, clean any excess epoxy, let dry, place neck heel firmly into body pocket, make sure neck is in proper alignment with body and drill new holes and if you want you can still use the neck inserts (that you inquired about in your original post) after the hole filling procedure has been completed.
