JTV 59 Pickup Covers - size?

I posted this on the user discussions and at TGP but nobody seems to know the answer. Are the 59 humbuckers an "off" size?

"Man, I love this guitar but I am really having a time dressing it up! Still having trouble with the toggle switch ring but that's another story.

I can't seem to find covers to fit these pickups. The polepieces seem to measure exacty 2" on center. Is it just me or is this an unusual size? I know it's not the 1 15/16" spacing because I have those on another guitar and they measure differently. And I just bought 2-1/16" covers and they are too big.

What gives?"

    Hey themoveschicago,

The measurements for the JTV-59 humbuckers are:

      2-3/4" X 1-1/2"

Re: RE: JTV 59 Pickup Covers - size?

Somebody did do a mod with pickup covers to dress up their JTV-59 -- I remember they posted pics of it. His looked great.

The bad thing was the post & pics were in a big thread that started as one thing and morphed into that discussion and probably out again. Can't really search for it by thread name, I don't think. Was not in the support forum, but the regular JTV discussion group, I think.

Someone also had pics of really nice stickers for covering up the figer board dots -- was by a guy in Japan that sold them -- had a lot of different styles along with the standard Gibson-style trapezoid. It was not long before the Japan earthquake & tsunami, as I recall.

Does anyone here remember those threads? It was a couple months before I got my 59 in late May, as I recall. So that would be sometime February through April, I'd guess.

I am more of a fan of the open coil look, but I did kind of perk up at the look of the stick on position markers -- there were several that used them and they said they were very durable, and not cheap looking. Very reasonably priced, as well. I didn't jump on that one as I didn't have my 59 yet....

            David --

YEAH That's the one I remember!! Was this yours, or a pic of somebody else's mod? Ok -- they were gold!! Were these replacement pickups with gold covers or just the covers, like themoveschicago is asking about? If just the covers, can you remember where you or whoever got them? I think he'd like to know. Looks like the adjustable pole piece screws are gold and the mounting screws, too, so my first impression is that the whole pickup was changed out... Not good news for themoveschicago... The tuners were also changed out to gold, I see. Looks great. The bridge is still chrome, but still... Sweet.

Like I said, I'm more of an open coil guy. I am thinking about the inlay stickers, though for mine... Thanks for that link!

              Hey Dave,

Yeah, that's mine. I swapped out the pickups unfortunately so can't really help out themoveschicago. I replaced the pickups with Gibson 490R/498Ts.

Thanks ....and the switch washer and nut, and the straplocks Not so easy to change out the bridge , but I've gotten use to it and don't mind it so much.

I bought some stickers from the dude, but decided against it. I might do some proper inlays on it one day.....

                David --

I like the looks of inlays better than the dots, but don't have the skills to do inlays properly, so the stickers seem like a painless alternative, and if they look too cheesy I can take 'em off. Or if I get tired of one style, can take e'm off and put different ones on... In fact if I go for getting some, I will probably buy 3 or 4 sets in different styles... They're pretty inexpensive, for a goof. I don't have tattoos, as I change my mind too often to do something that permanent...

Again, sweet lookin' axe you got there...

Re: RE: JTV 59 Pickup Covers - size?

Hi I'm from the UK, we use Inches and mm over here (or us older ones do!!) and it measures from pole to pole exactly 50mm, I was going to put some Bare Knuckles in and rang Line 6 UK who said it would invalidate the whole warranty!! which is a bit extreme Line 6 (even though on the 59 you don't go near the electronics, only the 3 way switch), anyway I don't think the Tyler pickups are that bad (suprisingly) and Bare Knuckles are £220 over here and maybe they would make a bit of difference, but not £220 worth!!!!

Anyway my point is that I hate open coils and if I can fit covers without going inside the guitar it would look so much better and Line 6 would have a job to exclude the warranty (only exclude the pickups), over here 50mm covers are common so I've sent for some today and will let you know if they fit and if they do where you can get them from.

Just one more question to Line 6, you know us guitarists like different pickups and basically no harm can be done if fitted by compedent people, so why this stance on changing pickups? We've spent a lot of money and god have we been patient with you over these guitars a lot of people love the features but still want a part of it somewhere to have "our sound" on the guitar, just be sensible and if you believe a fault or damage has been caused by fitting pickups, then charge, but if not related, just fix it................................

technically any modifications to anything would usually invalidate your warranty...

if you had your pups fitted by a guitar tech... and later on your JTV had a fault and needed a service, I would assume that unless the fault was a direct result of the pickups being changed, then the other parts would still be covered under warranty.... but that's perhaps not an easy argument to have.

I know Rich Renken has said that the JTVs can totally take different pups, but it depands on how responsive the service center rep is when you need to talk to them about warranty repairs...

          Cheers

Re: JTV 59 Pickup Covers - size?

I measured my 59's pups and they are 2-3/4" x 1-1/2" outside measurement and 2" from out side pole to outside pole for both bridge and neck, like you said. The Gibby cover replacements vary from vintage to modern, but are generally the 1-15/16" spacing as you noted. This link http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/covers_humbucker.htm has the Gibby's and also has no-hole covers in black, white, nickel, and gold. If you want, you could go with no pole piece holes, or drill, I suppose... Just a thought... I'm sure there are others out there, as well.

    Hey themoveschicago,

You might have to go with the covers that do not have the pole piece pre cut. This will give you the option to try and drill the pole piece holes yourself if you would like.

Re: JTV 59 Pickup Covers - size?

Just got some nickel covers on mine that fit perfectly. They are 50mm in size and I got them from here - http://www.axesrus.co.uk/Humbucker-Cover-German-Silver-Nickel-p/lpc003-4-5.htm

I just took the cream casing off then soldered the sides of the cover to the underside of the pickup. Pretty easy; and I think you'll agree, my JTV looks incredible now! FYI: It hasn't effected the tone in anyway that I can tell so don't worry about that!
