How to tell if an X3 is a newer one with button problem and bugs fixed?

I am looking for a used X3 Live and I have heard that the first ones have problems.  How can I tell if it is a newer one?  Serial #?  Version?

Is X3 Balanced output better for direct to board than an XT Live with a direct box?
