Variax 700 electric - Digital distortion/pverload

Hi

 

The output from my variax 700 electric distorts when I play the guitar with a medium to hard picking strength. The distortion is an unpleasant high freq digital distortion or fizz. It sounds like something in the variax circuitry is overloading.

 

Are there any adjustments that can be made in the variax - maybe a pot or something - to cure this?

 

Any other ideas?
