USB Output too loud?

This is my set up:

Variax 500 --> POD HD500 -->USB --> Cakewalk Sonar X1

 

At standard volumes I am clipping, so I turn down the output (via the main mix). On playback it is much louder then what the level in was.

 

Obious work around is to turn down the master volume in the DAW. However, I would rather just reduce the USB feed in, rather than turning down my master mix down and then turning down the master volume in the DAW.

 

Solution?

    You have two options:

    1- Turn down the patch volume

    2- USB... are you using Windows? If so, I presume Windows 7. Here follows a short step-by-step to configure the volume:

    2.1 - Control Panel -> Hardware and Sounds -> Sound

    2.2 - Recording -> Digital audio interface (must be Line 6 POD HD) -> Double click

    2.3 - There are 4 upper tables, click on Levels (the last one)

    2.4 - Reduce the Level to around 75 / 80 or less... only to cut the clipping... then you raise it until you get the limit before clipping

     

    I hope step 2 help you. I'm just translating my Windows as it is in Portuguese - Brazil.

    I believe that the very latest drivers (released a few days ago) now come with an additional gain control.  Use Monkey or go to the 'Downloads' link above to get them.

    Driver 4.2.5.1 adds gain control for USB audio.  You can now control the levels sent from your POD HD to your recording application using Line 6 Audio-MIDI Devices control panel.  These controls have been added for POD HD, POD HD300, POD HD400, POD HD500 and POD HD Pro.

     

    Go to Control Panel and select Line 6 Audio-MIDI Devices.  Select the Inputs and Recording tab to show two new controls: a single slider which controls the level sent to your recording application and a check box which provides an additional +18dB of gain.

    Thanks for the help guys. However, neither works.

    @birro - I had already tried that. I just went and tried again. Still no sucess. In fact, I tried turning the reording volume down to 0 and it still recorded full blast

    @jimsreynolds - Those setting are not there for me. I updated the drivers and confirmed that I ahve 4.2.5.1

    But that is indeed what I would be looking for.

      Strange... could you try something else before we keep on trying?

      Please test recording through the Windows Sound Recorder. Just try it instead of Cakewalk.

      If the recoding volume changes have an effect, the problem is not on Windows or your POD drivers... may be just a simple config on Cakewalk.


      If even using Windows Sound Recorder you still have clip, please try to post a screenshot of your Control Panel at the Recording section and also a photo of your HD500 edit with the fotos of your Mixer tab and also Amps tab.

        On Cakewalk Sonar, please try this:

        To check the audio input levels:

        1.Click the Arm button                  arm button in your new audio track.  It will turn red to let you know that the track is now record enabled.  Arming a track tells SONAR LE where you want to record material.  It also turns the track's playback meter into a record meter.  Every track you would like to record on needs to be armed first.

        2.Perform as you would if you were recording.  Watch the meter respond to the sounds you produce.  If the meter does not respond, you may need to raise the volume of your instrument or preamp.  Also, make sure that the Audio Engine button                  audio engine  in the Transport toolbar is depressed.   

        If the meter never even comes close to the maximum, increase the input level.  If the meter even occasionally reaches the maximum, decrease the input level. 

          Meter Level Low  = Input may be too low.
          = Input is too loud.

         

        When you are using WDM drivers this is done using the Windows mixer.  You can access the Windows mixer by going to your Start Menu, choosing All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, and then Volume Control.  When the Volume Control mixer opens go to Options | Properties. Click on "Recording" and hit OK.  The window title should now be "Record Control".  This is where you can adjust input levels.

        If you are using your sound card in ASIO driver mode the Windows mixer will not work.  You will need to go to Options | Audio in SONAR LE and click the "General" tab.  Now click on the "ASIO Panel" button.  Your sound card's properties page will open and you will be able to adjust levels there.  You may need to refer to the device's documentation for details.

        NOTE: You can see whether you are using WDM or ASIO drivers by going to Options | Audio and clicking on the "Advanced" tab.  Look in the "Driver Mode" field.

      Which OS are you using? Windows or Mac?

      If I take pictures of mine, you won't understand because it's in portuguese.

      But follow this and you'll see the screen:

      If it's Windows 7:

      In control panel, find the Line6 Audio Midi devices. Uncheck the +18dB box and then you should be good to go and able to adjust it as needed. This pegs all of my inputs too.

        thx guys, but i dont have the screen BULLDOG posted. i have the screen like Birro.

         

        i dont have ANY Line 6 Midi device on Control Panel .

         

        something is wrong?

         

        btw, i have drivers and all soft updated.

          Assuming your using Windows 7, then you should have it in the control panel. If not reinstall the latest drivers.

              Mine was not where stated in Windows 7 either. I could only find the panel that Birro had as well.

              However try this - Go to search programs and files (bottom left Windows orb)

              Just type Line 6 Audio-Midi Devices and it should pop up in your search menu.

              Click and your good to go.................

               

              Or if you want to get technical its located here

              C:\Windows\system32\L6DriverControlPanel.cpl

              If Windows 7 is installed on C drive of course

               

              Or Click All Programs menu

              Go to Line 6 Folder

              It should be under the "Tools" menu.
