the easiest way to avoid java with an XT is to use gearbox instead of line6 edit.
you may need to reinstall gearbox to set your file associations.

At this point, I would suggest giving Gearbox a try:
http://line6.com/software/index.html
Gearbox is not JAVA based so you should be able to save and load your tones using that application.
