This seems to be coming up a lot lately. Please read my following reply and ignore the following criticism by the person who doesn't appear to fully understand how the output modes work when cabinet modeling is not in use.

Basically you run a dual-amp configuration two independent parallel paths (configure the mixer block to hard-pan each path to its own channel), one dedicated to FOH and the other dedicated to your combo amp. Run the amp model driving the path eventually feeding your combo with cabinet modeling disabled. You should probably consider just using a preamp-only model for this path as well unless you prefer the sound of full amp model and have available DSP resources after configuring the other path for FOH.
If you're sending XLR to FOH and 1/4" to your combo amp then you need to insert a dummy plug into the unused 1/4" jack. If you don't then your combo amp will be sent the mix of both paths. You don't need to worry about the XLR mixing both channels, since it doesn't behave the same way as the 1/4" outputs. Of course you can only run the one channel that you tailored for FOH.
Now this is assuming the combo amp you'll be using has an effects return (power amp in) so you don't have to use its preamp. If you have to run into the front of the amp then you'll need to use the cleanest channel and set the tone controls in order to get the best sound (begin by setting the bass and treble to minimum and then increase the middle to taste).
Your other option is to set up the HD500 to drive your combo amp and then use a separate DI box with cabinet emulation in order to feed FOH.

Cheers Greg, I shall certainly bear that option in mind If using the amp's fx return sounds naff.

Oh I understand alrighty, I just dont agree with the way they were programed to work. Real amps with real speaker cabs dont act like this.
Dummy plugs to get the correct signals routed? Absurd. Im sure thats how you have to do it greg, not an issue with that part....

You didn't understand when I wrote that, spending several posts aggressively arguing a point that was not correct, only serving to confuse those trying to get reliable information. I understand that you don't like the solution and don't feel that it properly mimics real-world amplifier usage but this was not the issue at the time. You tried to say that the output modes made a difference regardless of wheter speaker emulation was used and this is simply, plainly and patently false.
Please don't try to re-write history by pretending that we were arguing over your opinion of my solution and more importantly let's not drag down this discussion with a repeat on an unnecessary food fight.

I believe that I can state that the HD does not work as it should here in this regard, without your permission greg.
And we can have all the ######"repeat" you wanna dish out in this case.
It happens that in the screwed up way in which the HD Pro was designed to work with and without cab emulation, you happened to be correct.
That dont make it the right way to do things... It just makes you correct, and that is a whole nother thing.

Just these...
1. If you are an old amp-cab user that is accustomed to the way real amps and cabs act together, throw all that out the window when setting up preouts on the HD.
2. What you think you know about adding a cab to a preamp tone wise(with regards to the pre-outputs of the HD) will not apply here, no matter how many years experience on stages and in studios or with other digital gear...
3. Use the "non-standard" and unorthodox methods (preamp out with and without cab emulations/dummy plugs/ juju beads etc etc) as greg has discribed above, and hope that some day Line 6 will fix it more like real amps and cabs work.
4. Dont be afraid to be wrong and admit it as I was, even if it go's against all reasonings as to why it was done the way it was... ; )
5. Oh yea. Never let anyone here suggest that you cant voice an opinion on a Line 6 product here, just because they would rather you didnt.
