Thinking of changing jtv59 tuners/machine heads

I'm thinking of changing the Tuners on my korean JTV59.
The ones that have come on the guitar, to me let it down a bit.
I would like to put a good set of locking tuners on it, but idon't want to alter or re-drill the headstock.
Can the Hipsop Locking Tuners that are fitted on the American JTV59 be used as a straight swap with the Korean JTV59 tuners?
If not, what are the best Locking Tuners to replace the original tuners with, without altering anything?
Many Thanks
Gary
That's something I'd like to get an answer too!!!
Hey guys:
I have your answer (I think....).
The Hipshot tuners (as on the JTV-59US) will NOT retrofit into the headstock of a Korean-built JTV-59 without redrilling. However you can use Schallers. We have a USA and also a Korean JTV-59.
See this thread below for how we retrofitted with Schaller locking tuners into our Korean - there are several images and a Schaller ordering source. It is a perfect fit, other than the the shaft on the paddles being a bit short (still works perfectly though....) Follow this link for the full detail:

Also, BTW, despite Sweetwater's site saying so, the JTV-59US does NOT come with locking Hipshots. They are non-locking Hipshot Classics (18-1 Ratio). Please refer to the Tyler Variax site for the full specs. It is found here:

Hello Bradley GT,
Thanks for your help. I followed your links to the Schaller TK 0976-010 Locking tuners.
They look just what i'm looking for!!!!!!
Tried to find them over here in England, but to no avail. Will get them from the USA.
Again Many Thanks.
Gary.
Gary:
My pleasure. Glad to help. We are very happy with the Schallers. Really stable and solid.
Best,
Bradley GT
Hi Bradley GT,
Ordered the Schaller TK 0976-010 yesterday after your post. They'll be comming from Tuson, Arizona. USA.
Will let you know what they are like when i've fitted them. Could be a while though.
All the Best.
Gary
I am thinking of going with the Planetwaves Auto Trim locking tuners. I realize I will need to drill some new holes for the set screws and fill and touch up the finish though. I have these on my Vax 500 and they are solid as a rock and the auto-trim feature is pretty cool!
Hi Gene1714
Thanks to your reply.
I'll be going with the Schaller, mainly because of the none drilling of the headstock.
Had a look at the Planetwaves, they look a good tuner though.
My mates looking at either the Vax 500 and 700. If he gets one that hasn't got locking tuners i'll show hin the
Planetwaves.
Good Luck
Gary.
Gary::
Sounds great. Feel free to shoot me a private email via Line 6 private messenger. if you need any guidance in getting them installed, or if you need me to take better pictures (the pics we took in the other thread were with my phone -which doesn't have the best camera). If it takes more than 10 minutes from start to finish, something's wrong. They fit so perfectly.
As much as I hate to admit this - we actually like the Schallers better than the Hipshots (non-locking) tuners on the USA 59. Unfortunately, the Schallers won't fit the USA 59 (although locking Hipshots will).
BTW, the Planet Waves are SWEET tuners - but we had the same approach as you in not wanting to drill any additional holes...
Take good care and I do think you will be pleased with the Schallers.
Bradley GT
Cheers Bradley GT,
The pictures from the other thread were great, thats what made my mind up.
When they're fitted i'll do my best to get a couple of pics to you.
Thanks matey
Gary
Gary:
Did the tuners arrive and did you get them in successfully?
Bradley GT
Hello Bradley GT,
They finally arrived yesterday. Put them on today, they're fantastic.
Like you said easy to change, took about 20mins.
I'll try to send you some photos tomorrow of them on, but my computer skills are dire, so may have to get some help to do so.
Again Bradley GT...... MANY THANKS for putting me onto the Schallers, there bang on!!!!!!!
All the Best Mate
Gary

Wow... What a journey - such a long wait. But they look great. Glad you are pleased.
Bradley
Hello Bradley GT,
Just thought i'd drop you a line about the Schaller Locking Tuners.
Had lots of problems with the seller. I bought them on the 8th of last month, he only posted them yesterday!!!!!!!
He only posted them after ignoring 5 emails to see where they were, then an email to report him to Paypal finally got him to send them.
When there fitted, i'll do my best to send you pictures. I thought they would of been fitted by know.
All The Best
Gary.
Gary,
Sorry you've had problems getting the tuners... Hopefully you will find that it was worth the wait... We are sure happy with ours.
Best,
Bradley
On the 500 I did have to drill new pilots but the tuner covers the original holes so no filling required.
Just wanted to thank all in this thread. Just installed the Schaller tuners and it literally took me 15 minutes from strings off to strings back on. The Schallers are a perfect locking replacement and I couldn't be happier with the improvement in tuning stability, ease of re-stringing (JTV -59), and quality of the tuners. You all saved me a ton of time. Thanks!
Stay in the mix and in the know.
