My JTV 69 dosn't work with my Vetta II VDI but works with my POD HD500. My Variax 700 and 300 both work with the vetta. I have tried different cables, the original VDI cabel works with my 700 and 300 but does not work with my JTV ! The only way I can get the JTV to work with the Pod HD500 is to use a standard Cat 5 cable.
Anyone have any ideas ?
Thats interesting.... In a bad way.
Whats more interesting is the FBV Long Board that I used with my Vetta II combo WILL work with the HD-Pro....
It would seem that your original VDI cable may not have continuity on all 8 pins for some reason. If you have access to a network cable tester you can check this out. If you were to 're-make' the RJ-45 ends of your VDI cable or have it done you may find it works as it should with your JTV. Check your VDI cable for cuts and other possible damage.
Both my VDI cables are about 5 years older than my JTVs and they work perfectly with both my older Variaxes and my two JTVs. The fact your JTV-69 works with a standard Ethernet cable (don't use this too much as it puts the connections on both guitar and POD/Vetta at risk of damage) proves that the guitar and POD are both OK, strongly suggesting that your VDI cable is the culprit here. What I can't be sure of is whether all 8 connections in a standard VDI cable are used with older Variaxes and whether with the JTV series an additional connection is needed as the JTV now has two channels of digital audio whereas the older Variax models only have one.

Nick, I checked the VDI cable with a CAT 5 cable tester and there was a broken core.
I still have an issue connecting the JTV to my Vetta II, it shows Variax Acoustic connected but it drops out every 5 - 10 seconds showing no variax. Also there is no guitar sound only a hissing noise and the amp appears to be locked up (unable to change the page on the screen) when it shows variax connected. I have tried this with a normal cat 5 cable that works fine with the JTV on the POD HD 500.
Both my Variax 700 and 300 work fine with the vetta.
I am at a complete loss with this.
Many Thanks
Your VDI cable is at fault and requires repair or replacement for sure. You cannot expect a brand new JTV guitar to work with an older Vetta amplifier properly when your VDI cable is faulty unfortunately. Your older Variaxes almost certainly don't require the connection for which you found the broken core.
Nick
Nick, I still don't understand why it won't work with a standard CAT 5 cable with the Vetta when it works fine with the POD HD 500. I will get a new cable today.
Thanks
I seem to recall one of the JTV beta testers, MerlinFL, AKA Neal had some similar issues with his first JTV and his Vetta early on. He set up a user group to talk about all things HD500, DT50 and JTV inside which exists this pretty long thread http://line6.com/support/message/208335#208335which might give you some clues, or you could simply ask him. I don't own a Vetta/Vetta II with which I could check things out for you. Personally I think your cable isn't helping matters for sure, but have no way of checking out what might be happening with your use of a standard Ethernet cable sorry.
I am certain of one thing. Not all network cables are made equally. I have had the same thing happen to me as you describe and it always came down to cables. I had a faulty Line 6 VDI cable and decided to cut it in half and make a good one out of the end that works for home studio use and it took a few RJ45 clips to get it working correctly and I have been making network cables for years and have all the correct tools and testers. Just because the cable passes the continuity tests does NOT guarantee that when you affix the Line6 barrel connection to each end of the cable that it will work. Connecting purchased network cables or ones I have made up myself don't not always work and I simply don't understand why that should be.
My only conclusion is that there is a very fine line between 8 gold plated wires in a RJ45 connector making a solid contact with the socket on the guitars because of marginal disparity in manufacturing processes/tolerances in either RJ45 clips or sockets.
I have a Line6 700 acoustic and electric and a JTV69 and all exhibited this failing in one way or another with my Vetta, POD X3 Pro and HD500. Since I replaced all RJ45 clips to all my VDI cables I have no problems with any of my gear. Just please don't use network cables and expect them to work all the time cos they just plain don't.
Personally, I don't use the VDI cable at all when playing live, when I did I had to wrap the cable around the guitar strap a couple of times just ensure the sound didn't cut out when I accidently stood on the cable or stressed the socket in any way. I use a wireless (Bug type) connection from the quarter inch jack and swap guitar models manually which is easy when I only use Strat and Les Paul models. This is flawless for me and guarantees I don't have to think about anything other than playing. I am now so used to recharging the battery before any gig or rehearsal and having a spare Lithium AAA battery sat on top of the HD500 for the transmitter every 6 gigs it has all become second nature. Of course, this may not apply to you or your current needs, just an explanation of what I have chosen to do.
When I bought into Line6 I didn't sign up for hassle.
Thanks for the reply Mark, I have ordered a new LIne 6 VDI cable which should arrive later today.
I hope this resolves my problems.
Update : It was the guitar that was faulty, had it exchanged today and the new one works fine with my Vetta !
Strange that the old guitar worked with the POD HD 500 and not the Vetta but Im a happy camper now.
Thanks
So it wasnt the 40 dollar cable, it was the 2,000.00 guitar?
Wow..
Welp at least you got it fixed with no cost to you...
OTOH there are probably more things to break on the guitar than there would be with the cable...
