Should there be play in my tremelo bar?

I finally got my JTV-69 US in late December and have only recently gotten a chance to really play it at length. I screwed the tremelo bar in last night and noticed there is some wiggle in it. That is, when I apply pressure in either direction, the bar moves a small bit before engaging. It's definitely screwed in all the way (it won't turn any more. I didn't force it any further.) Is this normal? I have never played a guitar with a tremelo before, so I don't know what to expect, but it doesn't seem right that there would be a bit of movement before the tremelo engages. It's very annoying. Is this normal? Can anything be done about it?
answered here on your other post at the JTV board
The link above just returns a page of code.
Thanks Hey_Joe.
Well, I didn't see that little bugger down there. Once I did, I realized that the correct size hex wrench was not included. I got one and gently torqued it as much as I felt comfortable doing and it did do away with the play. Howeeer, the bar still swivels. Is it suposed to? And does that little screw tear up the plastic sleeve that the bar goes into. Will that sleeve wear away over time?

I can't answer the swivel question yet. I don't have the new style bridge on my JTV-69 right now (it's in the shop for repair and on Line 6's repair bench awaiting the original JTV bridge swapped out for the new style that you have) It came with the first bridge and they couldn't get the bridge to return to pitch without the swap out and an few other modifications to the Korean factory's workmanship.
It won't tear up the sleeve to tighten the hex nut. Line 6 has been using this style of trem retention in their 600 and 700 1st gen Variaxes with no problem and Wilkinson has been using the same kind of sleeve for years in their tremolo which I have on my Fernades Retrorocket Elite.
This is not the answer to your specific question however I have been using trems of all sorts umm everyone that I can think of in my 32 years of playing not counting 4 years of lessons that I dont add when I was 8-12... when you say play!! you have to desctive a bit better
an easy way to do this is just grab your phone and make a quick video of the issue then post it wherever and put the link in... Now even if it did ot have play... on most trems of this style the fix for getting out of tune is really easy put either a Tremsetter in or the new one the Box ahh something hell I just bought one I should remember anyway... what this does is insure that the toneblock always goes back to perfect "0" point I use it on all my Trems Fenders and Hamers and Schalers and Floyd roses etc etc... its great and they cost ya about 40.00 but it is well worth it if you do play out with a band and need to insure you stay in tune or are doing session work or musicl scores for film or TV... No rockstar you see has a Floyd Rose for example that at minimum does not have a heavy duty Brass tremblock heavy duty springs and some form of Tremsetter.. thats why Satriani can do insane even on his Ibanez bridge which is and advanced for of a Floyd Rose he also uses a tremsetter.. now if you just **** around at home it dont matter but if you are recording yoru songs I would surly make sure that my guitar styaed in tune.. Some food for though on all Trems not just the JT bridge on the Variax hope this helps ![]()
