It looks like asterix key on your keyboard may be sticky too.

It does sound like you have had a bad run of luck on your gear.   Some of it might even be fixable if you feel the urge to come back and ask a few questions.  Seriously though, to have so much gear go bad on you it may be worth asking questions about the power in your home.

That's funny,  I have beat the crap out of 3 Variax's an X3 Live and an HD500 for over 500 gigs with many other drunk idiots playing them at my open mic night and have had no issues.  Maybe you are doing something wrong or just a troll.

      Bingo!

So, class..can you spot the trolling signs?

      - one post wonder

      - claims he did a 'few' gigs with the Pod HD500, and then tried to figure out how to use it (?)

      - claims to be a Line 6 user of multiple products, but chooses 'now' to use the forum

      - praises Almighty BOSS as the one true way

      - speaks fluent asterick

      - failed the audition for The Jerry Springer Show, the producers found his character too unbelievable

For the HD500 you can try a hardware reset and it could fix all your problems.  Any machine that communicates with PC or MACs is likely to need resetting every once in a while. Also if you change your topic and flag your post as a question, many will help you. Many issues can be easily resolved if you ask!

I assume you're still fighting the device with the different shapes and matching pieces. *************Just purchased the HD500 and am loving it. It has been awhile (80's stomp effects) so it's been fun playing catch up with the technology. Spending hours with my laptop, HD500 and guitar just trying everything. Posts like this remind me of a ten year old with a broken gameboy.

      Re: JUNK

I don't want to defend the way this guy rants but I do understand to some degree his frustrations.  I for one was a long time Boss guy.  I never really got into that pedal but I ended up buying a X3Live and BAMM I had so many useable tones right away. It was easy for me to get great sounds.  Now here comes the HD500 so I pick one up and after a year of tweaking I still haven't gelled with it like my X3L.  I can appreciate the total flexibility of this unit but I don't have the time or the audio engineering experience to make it work for me.  Still I try and I hang on to the fact that updates may save me but...I think you get the point.  I'm not a spoiled brat with a broken Xbox but I too am a little disappointed with their "leap forward".  I still believe its a lot of device and a good bang for your buck, however I have wasted so much time building and throwing away tones.  It can be frustrating.

      Cheers

Why not try the HD300 or HD400? They are designed to be much simpler, and it's a lot easier to get great tones "out of the box".

          Re: JUNK

I don't downgrade for one main reason  It's that I'm not quite willing to sell unit for a loss and purchase a pedal that may not sound that great either.  My experience has been plagued by buzz/fuzz and general EQ issues. I dont think these problems are inherent to the 500 only.  I may be wrong but I have followed the arguments of people saying the 300/400 sound inherently better and it appears that argument hasn't held any water.

I know people love the pedal and I figure that it must be operator error so I continue to try.

          Cheers

            Re: JUNK

"Buzz and fuzz and general EQ issues"   ...... have you read the thread "WHAT EVERY HD500 OWNER SHOULD KNOW"   ?  See http://line6.com/support/thread/74045

To summarize - check out what you have got your INPUT 1 and INPUT 2 set to.   Is INPUT 1 set to the HD500 default of GUITAR+AUX+VARIAX and INPUT 2 set to SAME ?

If you are just using a guitar then try setting INPUT 1 to GUITAR and set INPUT 2 to VARIAX (which effectively disables it if you don't have a variax or JTV connected).

Why do this?  Well it prevents the unit doubling the input signal and over driving the fx and amp models which results in buzz and fizz and muddy sounds.

You only want to set INPUT 2 to SAME if you are actually using a tone with two distinct paths with different fx/amps and then you need to ensure that your input signal is routed to the second path.

Really hope that helps you resolve your sound issues.  All the best.

            Re: JUNK

I sold my HD300. I couldnt get any real sounds from it. I just got a Big Muff Pie 4, and its really easy to make it sound much better than the pod. I think there are several issues:

            1) The pod is very cheap for all it tries to achieve. You cant, apparently, expect miracles.

            2) Beyond the usual gain and tone controls, there is more flexibility: sag * bias * biasX * cab * mic * model * 2(pre/post). The parameter space is just enormous; you could spend an age fiddling instead of playing.

Finally I realised it just sounded thin compared to even my solid state Marshall vs. And it sounds really thin compared to my Big Muff.

If the pod works for your sound, its hugely convenient. If it doesnt, its hugely frustrating. For me it was hugely frustrating.

        Re: JUNK

I guess I'm surprised that you find it easier to get up and going with the X3L than with the HD500. That was thing I noticed first about the HD500, really. It was relatively easy for me to dial in good amp tones, and then it's just a matter of adding effects. My feeling is that if you're spending a lot of time creating and throwing away tones, there might be an easier way to go about it. Once you have a small group of core tones you're really happy with, tweaking and adding things isn't so much of a chore. I just think everything on the HD500 just sounds and reacts better than the X3L, so overall I find the process a lot easier. I guess it also helps that I owned the M13 for a two years before I had the HD500, so I'm very familiar with the effects.

          Re: JUNK

I definitely found it easier with the X3L to begin with, though the end results are much better with the HD500.  I had the hardest time figuring out how to "take the blanket" off the tone.  Once I got the tips down that I found here I could easily create patches with all models.  That being said, I think my biggest problem was that I have almost no experience with real amps.  I was a drummer who learned to play guitar.  I had one cheap solid state amp that I never used, then just played acoustic for years then when I went back to electric, I bought the original POD and played electric only to record.  When my acoustic duo turned electric, I bought the X3L to run into the keyboard amp I used as my acoustic amp.  Again, it was very simple, it didn't have the response or authenticity that the HD500 has now, but I didn't know any better.

The HD500 is meant to mimic the function of the actual amps.  I never had to deal with anything like finding the sweet spot, so that concept was difficult for me.  With the X3L I didn't have to mess around with EQ's and cab mics to "take the blanket" off.  I found the HD500 to be more work in that regard and I was underskilled in that area to figure it out.  That's where this message board came in and the help of people here is what got me over the hump.  I heard great examples of tone, so I knew it was possible.  I just had to figure out what you guys were doing to get it.

        Re: JUNK

I don't want to bash him for his frustration.  It is only his approach that bothered me.  I had a hard time getting the right sounds out of the HD500 when I first got it too.  The X3L was much easier from the start.  The key was learning the tricks and tips I did on this board.  Also, the result was well beyond anything you could get from the X3L.

Anyway, as for this guy, there are so many people that go out of their way to help others that it rubs me the wrong way when someone comes here and their first post sounds like this.  I also find it funny when people say the pedal doesn't work for them.  I mean there are plenty of people here doing the exact same thing they are trying to do with excellent results.  If you actually want to get those results, read their posts and ask questions.  If you just want to come here and be a whiney b*tch, then you are missing out and not doing yourself any favors.  On top of that you aren't going to get a lot of sympathy and you aren't solving your problem.

You are being patient despite your frustration.  The key I found here is to start with the basic tips and tricks then find messages that deal with your specific setup.  I go FRFR into a keyboard amp, you may be going into the front of a guitar amp or just having a hard time with tones direct into your computer for recording.  If you can't find the answers you are looking for quickly enough, post a question here with your setup and problem.  People are so helpful and when you hear the examples that some people post, you know the unit is capable.

I guess my point to the original poster is, if you are going to come here with frustrations at least give the people who spend so much of their own free time helping others enough respect to give them a chance to help before blasting flame balls at the gear.

Cheers The Troll

I think that what you mean is that "you" have a problem (and I mean with your unit - I am really not implying something personal). The implication from your post is that there is a systemic problem with the HD500. I don't agree. As has been stated many times, if you come to a support forum you will see people seeking support so logically you are going to see a lot of people with problems on the forum, that doesn't mean that there is a high proportion of people who have bought the unit that have a problem.

Having said that it really looks like you have had a bad run of problems, and I can genuinely understand your frustration and of course if you feel you have exhausted all of your options (or are just fed up with trying) you have a perfect right to jump ship, and to a degree vent your frustration.

I just don't think to imply that all HDs are inherently faulty and that people who aren't experiencing faulty units just have their "heads in the sand" is either fair or accurate.

For the record I don't classify you as a "Troll" (and I know that has been suggested) granted you have only a few posts, but I do see that you joined the board nearly 2 years ago, if you are a Troll you are a very forward thinking troll ;-) - But it does imply to me that if you joined 2 years ago I assume that was because you have previously purchased Line6 gear and on the whole haven't had a problem (only 4 posts in 2 years and 3 of them related to this thread). Doesn't that make you think that you have just had a run of bad luck with your HD? As I said that is frustrating but a fact of life is that does happen from time to time.

I wish you luck with whatever equipment you end up choosing to go with. In the end it is all about being happy with you equipment.

            Good Luck

It's all about your approach.  I explained it to you in my previous message.  There are a bunch of people that spend a ton of their own time to help others with issues.  When you come here calling the equipment junk and start swearing from message #1, it looks like you don't care about finding a solution, you are disrespectful to the people here trying to help, maybe a troll who doesn't even own the equipment or maybe causing your own problems by misusing it.  Understand this, the only impression we have of you is the one you give us with your communication.  I have been on this board for a long time and using Line 6 products for a while.  I had issues with the X3 and my Variax 300 and the people on this board heard about it.  I don't have my head in the sand, I came here for help, figured out when I was doing something wrong or if it was Line 6's fault then tried to respectfully seek a solution.  You can only expect to receive the respect you give.  By the way there are many other people here making their own living with the equipment you call JUNK so keep that in mind when the response you get to your message isn't exactly what you hoped for.

The guardian of the forum?  This forum has been an invaluable resource to me and countless others.  I just like to do my part to keep it that way.  It has not only helped me use the equipment, but it helped me make the decision to buy much of it.  Every once in a while you would see a message like yours and if it weren't for other "guardians" setting things straight I may not have purchesed the equipment that has made my gig a dream.  Take it as you will, but when others come here doing their research they will see both sides of it and be able to decide for themselves if this is some systemic problem or of you are just a rude, less-than-one-percenter.

I'm sure you are a great guy who just didn't really think of it that way when you came here to vent.  ;-)  I'll leave it alone now.

    Hello van_apthorpe,

Are you still having problems with the POD HD500?  You have not specified what kind of troubleshooting (if any) you have tried to fix the problem.  Have you tried connecting it to different computers and attempting to re-install the flash memory:

    http://line6.com/community/docs/DOC-2057

Please give that a try on a couple of different systems and let us know if you continue to have problems.

    Regards,
