Direct out from POD HD Desktop?

I've just got a new replacement of my old POD XT Live which is POD HD Desktop. I know that its outputs are balanced but most of balanced outputs I have seen are in form of XLR outs. I'm wondering about the difference between 1/4" balanced outputs and XLR balanced outputs.

And when I play live, can I just directly plug from its 1/4" balanced outputs to the PA systems?

Or i still need a DI Box?

The 1/4" outs on the bean are line level and the XLR outs on the other PODS are mic level, but other than that, a balanced signal is a balanced signal. There's not really a need to use a direct box, but it won't hurt either. You could just use a 1/4" TRS to XLR adapter.

The balanced outputs are 1/4" TRS...Tip-Ring-Sleeve...Some folks will call this a stereo plug as it is the same as a stereo 1/4 headphone jack...You can get male 1/4" TRS->female XLR cables and you would not need direct boxes...The only difference is form factor of the connectors...Neither is more or less balanced that the other...A balanced TRS jack gives you the option of running it unbalanced by simply using unbalanced cables...You need an adapter to make an XLR do that...
