POD HD 500 Multi-Effects and ENGL Fireball 100 Head

Hi,

 

First off, let me say that I am a complete noob to the multi-effects world.

I recently bought an ENGL Fireball 100 head which I am running through a Vader cabinet.

I really enjoy the distortion that this head has to offer.

I like the clean channel as well but I'd like to add a richer, creamier tone to it.

I've read multiple threads on many different configurations and now....I am fully, utterly, and completely confused! lol

 

There is no midi option on the ENGL head so a midi switcher won't work so I have a few questions here.

 

#1: I want to be able to switch from the clean channel on the head to the gain channel. Is this possible to do with my HD500 pedal or will I need to add a channel switcher like the ENGL Z-4 switch in addition to the HD500.

If I need to add the channel switcher, where would I plug it into?

 

#2: I would like to be able to use the HD500 to add effects to either channel on the head. Is this possible? If so, how would I set this configuration up and still maintain switching channels on the head?

 

#3: Am I completely wrong in my thinking here? Should I just use the clean channel on the head and run all of the HD500's effects through that? Even though I love the distortion of the head?

 

HELP!!!

 

I'm lost in a sea of technical conundrum!!

 

They say the simplest way is always the best, but I'm not so sure about that this time.

 

Any help with this would be IMMENSELY appreciated!

    1st, since no midi connection NO possible

    2nd, you can use only the effects from the HD but the head will be manually switching again, and not with the pod,That means that your effects will be maintained at the pod, even if you change channels at the amp.

    3rd.You can use only the clean and add the distortion from the pod, or you can use the pod only for effects and the amps distortion.Or even both.None limits you on this

     

    P.S. I don't know where you can add the switcher of the amp, it is something about the amp specific...Sorry

    I'll throw another wrench into things here.......... just to adfd abit more confusion for you...

     

    It sounds to me like you enjoy the tone of your new ENGL amp, and that you plan to use the HD500 primarily for FX. If that's the case you may want to look at the Line 6 M9 or M13 Stompbox Modeler products rather than the HD500. Both the HD500 and the M9/13 use the same FX models and technology. The main difference between the HD500 and the M9/13 is that the HD500 offers amp modeling as well as FX modeling. But if you don't plan to use the HD500 for amp modeling......... you could save yourself about $100 by going with the M13; more if you went with the M9.

     

    Having said that, the extra $100 gives you great value - I'm not trying to persuade you not to get the HD500. I just want to point out an option. For setup with the HD500 and your ENGL I would suggest the 4-cable method. Search this forum under the term 4CM to get details. For example, here's a useful thread:

      Thanks Silverhead.

      Unfortunately, I got a really good deal on the HD500 so it is what I have.

      So, with that being said, can I turn off the amp modeling in the HD500 and just use it's effects?
      I thought I read that somewhere else.

      Is that the 4CM?

      Does the 4CM automatically make my ENGL a one channel head?

      Wow,....getting cloudier! lol

    Couldn't I just run an A/B channel switcher to the front of the head and my HD500 into the FX loop in the back?

    That way I could use the HD500 strictly for my cleans.

      The HD500 has good cleans.  I'd 4CM the amp, and leave the amp on the dirty channel.  You can use the Pod for the cleans and the ENGL for dirty patches, and you could use the Pod for effects for any patches.

       

      If you want to be able to use both channels in the ENGL, the simplest thing to do would be to use the ENGL's channel switcher to switch channels, then additionally switch patches on the Pod.

       

      You could also set the Pod up like a pedalboard, where each footswitch toggles an individual effect on/off, instead of using patches.  Or you could do a mix - have the bottom row switch patches, and set all the patches up with the same effects, then use the top row to toggle individual effects.  the patches, would simply be common combinations of which effects you want on.  for instance, A would be all effects off, B would be delay + reverb, C would be chorus + reverb, and D would be chorus + delay + reverb.  etc etc.

       

      to get the pod to channel switch the ENGL, you'd need a device capable of recieving midi and sending channel switch signals to the amp, like this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/engl-z-11-midi-switcher

       

      or the Amp Gizmo/Rack Gizmo, Axess CFX4, or G System.

    If velcro one of these on the back of your amp, you could put midi FS control on your Engle...Then just program the relay and hook up midi to the HD500...

    This in conjunction with 4CM would allow your patches to flip the channel on your Engle or program a CC on a HD500 button to do it...A lot of options...
