Vintage” HD Mic Preamp Model??

So...how will this come into play on the HD series POD's?

Is it in line like an effect or is it only used for hooking up a real mic to the device an this used to "enhance" the sound?

Did the X3L have this? I still have mine but haven't had it out of the box since I got my POD HD 500 over a year ago!

It takes the place of an amp model, and could potentially be used for mics or acoustic instruments, which need minimal coloration, but could benefit from a bit of tone shaping.  The model does exist on the X3L

      Well isn't this interesting...

I said exactly what you did in an earlier thread and Meambo corrected me saying that it was an Effect not an Amp and he was right so I was about to correct you, but Line-6 have changed the wording on the News page:

      It now says -

      • “Vintage” HD Mic Preamp Model. A vintage-voiced tube mic preamp based on* the Requisite® Y7. This new model adds incredible warmth to vocal sounds and guitar and bass tones. Its controls include:
        • Gain
        • HPF (High Pass Filter)
        • LPF (Low Pass Filter)
        • Phase
        • Output

But at the time of the earlier discussion at the end of February it said (copied from this earlier thread http://uk.line6.com/support/message/359625#359625) -

“Vintage” HD Mic Preamp Model. A vintage-voiced tube mic preamp based on* the Requisite® Y7. Place this model at any point in the signal chain to give incredible warmth to vocal sounds and guitar and bass tones. Its controls include:

      • Gain
      • HPF (High Pass Filter)
      • LPF (Low Pass Filter)
      • Phase
      • Output

So Line-6 have changed the wording so it now implies it is an Amp not an Effect.

If this is the case then it is a real shame because as an effect that could be used after the amp it would give much better tone control and act like the channel strip on the mixer plus the Phase control would allow dual amps to be phase corrected so that they sum correctly to mono.

Still hoping for implementation as an Effect as it doesn't seem to fit well as an Amp - as an Amp it can presumably have a cab placed after it which doesn't make sense to me.

I'm so thrilled about this feature. Though I don't really know what L6 has in mind for condenser mics in terms of power supply, since you don't (at least I don't do it) record acoustic guitar with a dynamic mic.

Hmmm....makes me wonder if maybe the implementation as an effect was troublesome and is the reason the update has taken so long...

        Just a thought

ah - yes, good catch.  sounds more like an amp model to me too now.  that probably also means it will be consuming a fair amount of DSP, which means that its doing a lot more than a little EQ and phase correction...  It might be helpful for my clean patches that currently use "no amp" but i am still very curious about its prospects for vocals, especially with no phantom power...

I see nothing in the new wording that implies the Mic Preamp is now an amp and not an effect.

Assuming the update is released on time we should all know for sure by tomorrow...

    Three things:

    1. Looks like it's gonna be a little late...

    Hi Folks,

It's looking like we'll be able to release next week......

    2. I am betting Big Chas is already beta testing the update so I am going to take his word that the mic pre takes the place of an amp

    3. Meambobbo, I downloaded some of your tones last night and a couple of them really helped me out - thanks all the work you have done and help you have offered in these forums.

Re: Vintage” HD Mic Preamp Model??

no problem - wait until next week.  the tones i have coming will cause skulls to implode.  last night i stumbled onto my greatest discovery yet - being able to phase correct dual cabs by using EQ effects to delay one of the signals.  The tone of a XXL and Hiway cab both using 57 off axis with phase correction is simply epic.  It's not only the best tone I have gotten from the Pod HD but the best IR tone i've ever heard.

I'm really hoping the mic pre-amp can be placed anywhere and that it's "phase" parameter can help me acheive even greater accuracy in this regard.  that would be epic.

All the sudden i've gone from complete meh to bug-eyed, mouth-watering, gimme gimme gimme on this update.

      Hi guys . . .

I'm not one of the beta testers (I wish I was).  My "predictions" about the Vintage Pre being an amp model are based on the current description.  I would love to be wrong on this.
