    Re: When?????

Hey we have 4 more days... let's hope they hold true.  My next gig isn't until the April 6 so if they get it out by the end of the month I'll have time to get some stuff sorted out and use it for that gig which will be awesome.  They just keep making life easier for me... even though the waiting isn't easy.

they said 1st quarter... 3 days to go before you hear anything either way.... thats my guess..

im still fairly unimpressed...considering i dont play bass, record vocals or own a JTV or DTxx amp.... im seeing 1 amp model (2 channels is still 1 amp in my books) and thats it..

hardly what i'd call a 2.0 update, let alone one worth waiting this long for....

Well, it's a free update... How much is free worth to you?

I guess I don't get the hand-wringing... It will get here when it gets here.

To be honest, I think I've only ever installed any of the updates on any of my Line 6 stuff on the first day they came out like two or three times. Idon't ever give that much thought to it, I guess.

haha.. yeah its free, im thankful my hd500 works and i havent had any of the issues other have....

im just saying.... its hardly shaping up to be a major update, like i said for myself its 1 new amp model and a bunch of features i'd need to pay thousands to use.. so many features or areas are arguably lacking or in need of improvement.... and their big long awaited update is features for only those that dropped 2 grand on one of their amps or guitars? that kinda pisses me off from a consumers pov... like buying the HD wasnt enough, im now expected to buy everything else to fully enjoy my purchase...

but again... just a personal beef i guess. screw features i dont need or want, ya know? lol.. i agree with you tho, i dont get why people are so impatient for it.... be thankful we even get an update is my general view..

            Re: When?????

Since you put it that way, from Line 6 perspective and from a customer's point of view, doesn't it make more sense that so many of the FREE upgrades would target the "dream rig" customers.  Yeah, I have dropped over $3000 on my dream rig components.  Honestly I do feel a bit more entitled to these upgrades.

As for Line 6, they are marketing the dream rig and it's interoperability.  It makes perfect sense that they would put a priority on enhancing that.  Keep in mind, we already got what we paid for.  These upgrades are there to help continue sales and make their products more marketable.  The work they are doing costs money so there has to be a business case for them.  Be happy that there is enough of a business case in enhancing the stuff you already paid for that they can offer those upgrades for free.  I'm still hoping they hit some of the other frequently requested items so the sooner they get this one out, the sooner they can start work on the next batch.

              Re: When?????

+1, i agree it makes sense.  If there wasn't enough argument for you to buy the JTV or DT** up til now maybe this is the push that makes you say OK this is totally worth it.  Of course not everyone but for a few people I'm sure it will be.  As far as the hand-wringing Phil, for me this is going to be an awesome update and I can't wait to store tunings in my HD500.  Being able to do a rhythm part in say open G, then stomp the HD to solo in regular tuning and then go back again.  Even the idea of being able to setup song titles on the HD that will automatically setup a virtual capo that I would use for that song instead of fuddling around with the alt tuning knob on my guitar.  Don't get me wrong, that alt tuning knob is a HUGE bonus as a player, but letting us go way beyond that by letting us store tunings in the HD, well, Line 6 has gone and outdone their own achievements.  I used no alt tunings and an actual capo before I got my JTV.  Now I use lots of alt tunings and I don't even know where my capo is.

*** And let's not forget, Line 6 is in California, so they have another 3 hours on me in EST.   As I write this, it's not even 9:00 there... So checking before noon or 1:00 on any given day isn't a good idea for me.

I just don't get the need for daily checking - all of us can sign up to be notified of the update by email when it is released. Check your Profile - Email Preferences and tick the Product Updates box. As long as you have registered your HD device you will receive an email when the update is released.

                  Re: When?????

That's really not the point though.  It isn't about the effort it takes to come to the board to check.  People are anxious to try these new features and have been looking forward to it for almost 3 months now.  A simple status update resets expectations.  I have said this before, but I am not worried about it.  As a dream rig user I am looking forward to a lot of the features.  When I was using the X3L I used it for bass and vocals as well.  In addition I use my Variax not only for a few acoustic songs in my full band show, but for solo acoustic as well.  I didn't find a huge difference between my Variax 300 and JTV 69 acoustic models and I am REALLY excited to try the new remodeled versions out.  That being said, I want it rock solid and I can be patient.  .  Just a simple status update and I won't even think about it until we get close to the next timeframe they give.

              Re: When?????

i hear you... if you have these components then this is a very welcome update, no argument...

but i didnt buy a HD500 because i owned or wanted to own a DTxx or jtv.... sure they'd be nice but it isnt going to happen for me, price being the single factor...

i dropped alot of money (for me) on the 500.... if all future development is only going into selling additional propriatary hardware to complement it, then i may have thought differently before buying it... or at least waited for the price to drop...

like i've said.. to each their own... i am fairly happy with my pod the way it sits now.... but i cant ignore the fact that im disapointed in the lack of useful updates since i've owned it... i expected more, just my opinion.. and im willing to bet the majority of pod users dont own either of those 2 peices of gear...so it isnt about pleasing current customers, its about selling new products...

you guys that own this gear deserve these updates more then i deserve new features.... but it still sucks to be getting nothing on my end...

Thought I'd join the fun. As a software developer for 25+ years now, it is very difficult to predict how long a code project is going to take. Finding problems in beta testing can add a huge amount of time if they are significant. I'm happy to wait it out and I'm sure it will be a stable release.

I asked and wish that Line 6 would offer an API so that us coders could write our own add-ons. I'd like to write a program to set the level of all of your patches to a similar level.

      wouldnt that be nice....

it tends to lead to embarassment... watching the general public develop your product better then you could... then the excuses you gave to management on why you couldnt do something go up in smoke.... lol

not talking directly about L6 or anyone... but its a trend i have noticed in the past.. there is always someone better and smarter but some companies refuse to accept it or they hide from the issue entirely..

        Re: When?????

I'm sure they have legitimate concerns with opening it up to outside developers. If one of us writes custom code that has a negative impact on a device, they would be in a position of having to deal with complaints related to code that they didn't write. Still it would be fun to write some code for it.

Something simple like a set list manager where you can re-arrange your patches by changing the order of them in a text file and have it reload the device. Or a utility to take a custom tone file and have it mapped to your rig. For example, I have the HD500 with a DT25 Combo. Almost all of my patches are using a preamp model with chorus mapped to FS1, flanger to FS2, delay to FS3, etc. I also have the output set to a combo. If I download a custom tone that uses full amp models and is mapped to a different output it would be nice to map as much as possible of it to my rig settings. Haven't really charted this out but it would be helpful to me. It seems like I spend more time changing a custom tone to my rig than it should. Especially if it ends up being a patch that I don't like.

          Re: When?????

yeah i understand the business side of it, and its ugly...but its never as simple as saying "we dont support custom FW" and being done with it...

but from a users standpoint... im willing to bet there is functionality there that can be brought out, hidden parameters etc... not to mention the countless little things that some users crave but others dont, people could take development of their device in their own hands... make it suit them and others in their position.. maybe someone could figure out the custom IR's, or tweak the EQ's.. or fix dumb little bugs in a few days rather then wait months for the big update... custom FW is never for beginners and people only look for things like that when they know what they are doing... L6 keeps it simple for joe-blow, maybe others can handle the extra control?

when you see the business side of any industry, you start to realize the HD could be capable of things they dont want you to have, so they can sell you something else later... like the groupings or restrictions on the 300/400...odds are thats just code to entice you into buying the more expensive unit, just an example...

that is the main reason companies protect their code... not customer service issues... but just discussion and my opinion on tech in general, im not trying to say L6 is trying to screw people or anything... i like my hd500.. lol... but people cant afford to be niave about things like this...

            Re: When?????

I really don't think design decisions very often come down to people not wanting the users to have the ability to do certain things. I think it's just that with every decision there's a cost/benefit analysis that comes along. Sometimes investing a little bit more time in something makes sense, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes there's a feature that will make one group of people happy but tick another group off. I just don't accept the idea that it comes down to ill intentions or even purposeful withholding of of features. Certainly as a business, future planning is a must, and you have to keep on thinking about how your current product offerings will play into that future.

I think there's a school of thought that says people who make a product and people who buy it are on opposite teams almost. I really don't buy into that, at least not with Line 6. I think they really do want to make products that have the users' best interest at heart. It's just that with such a big user base, they'll never make something that pleases everyone.

              Re: When?????

i tried to make it clear throughout that im not specifically talking about line6... i mean i could be right, but i have no evidence of it...

i look at companies like Apple with the iphone, the jailbreak community did amazing things once they got passed all of Apples blocks... and apple did all they could to stop them because developers were unlocking features that they wanted to sell in the new phone.. video recording on the 3g for example

and i do sort of subscribe to that school of thought to some degree... the companies best interest is typically not the customers... they need to look at their future as a company, quality free updates or hardware meant to last 10+ years is ...well, bad for business...

just as a purely hypothetical example.....

maybe its entirely possible to load custom IR's on the HD500.... but what if they plan on using that as a selling point for their next model? they could give it to us now (or allow someone else to do it instead)and make nothing or hold on and sell it to us down the road... its not really a hard decision or even an unethical one, i'd do it in their position! lol...

its in their best interest to control development but not the users...a customer that just bought his 500 wants all he can get for his money... he isnt wrong either..

but like you said.. Line6 may be one of the exceptions, im in no position to make the claim they arent... just discussion though, i have no beef to air out.. lol

I am also a software developer for over 20 years.  You can absolutely hit snags in your schedule and the most important thing is that you keep the customer informed.  In all my messages on the subject I only ask for two things:  a solid release and communication.

Software dev here also.  In the business systems I program, we have the luxury of comparitvely unlimited RAM and storage.  Fixing defects is generally easy.  Even still, our project schedules can still go haywire when we run into unexpected consequences.

Now imagine you have all that same code, and you're being asked to optimize it for a tiny processor with limited flash ROM and RAM.  You have to test out every possible combination and make sure there are no unwelcome side effects or regressions.  Across several hardware platforms.  And your users are cork-sniffing tone fiends.

It's a wonder they ever get done.
