New JTV acoustic models first impressions?

So just a couple of hours ago, the new JTV firmware update was released (1.8). I wanted to start a thread right away and see what everyone's first impressions are of the new acoustic models. So if you are a nut and already have the models installed, how do they sound? Also, over the next few days I will be giving an indepth video that will compare the old acoustic models (the ones that came with the guitar prior to 1.8 firmware) and the brand new ones. So everyone... how they sound?
I love the 6-string acoustic models, but the 12-string model sound a little worse than the previous ones to my ears. I'm just figuring out my new JTV-59, so maybe I don't have something set right.
Also, the amp models in the new HD500 2.0 firmware seem to have the high fizz again. Hopefully, I just need to tweak it somehow. Curious to hear what everyone else thinks.
I've thrown up an audio clip with a comparison of the sounds at [edit]
Please excuse my atrocious playing! I threw this together as fast as I could while half-crouched over my keyboard... lol. Maybe later I can redo it with some better/different playing, but for now this will have to do. I think fstaunton summed it up pretty well. The 6-strings sound really good, and they will be a pleasant surprise when you first hear them for yourself. But, the 12-strings seem to be a step backwards (!?!?). Really unfortunate that L6 didn't leave the old models as an option in Workbench (seems they just assume 100% of us will like the new ones better, and have no interest in ever playing the old ones again?). The only way is to roll back your version. We'll have to see if some time spent making adjustments in Workbench can produce better results with the 12-strings.

Im not pleased with the new 6 strings. Heres why. They have a much 'Roomier/distant' sound than the 'old' models. Its an early reflection sound that you get when pulling the microphone away from the soundhole of an acoustic guitar by a few feet. Its nice sounding, but I really dont want that built into the model itself. You can easily get that sound using an early reflection delay set to very low values. Having it built into the Model itself means you will ALWAYS have that distant sound built in.
Line 6 please make the 'old' acoustic models available, ie give us the option of storing both in the guitar.
There are times (ie playing live) where you dont want a roomy type acoustic sound and it needs to be tight.
Well, if that's the way the new one's sound I won't be installing the update. They all sound worse to me, unless it's the eq'ing you did on them.
Dan
I would suggest you play with the sound a little more. These models are far less boomy but you can bring in more body by rolling off the tone knob. I find it's a far more controlled sound all around. To me the previous models had too much of a piezo boom sound to them and rolling off the tone knob made it worse. Now you have a lot of useable tone knob control. I used lots of EQ on my HD500 for my acoustic patches and you couldn't use the same patch for all the models. Now the models sound better with nothing than they do with tons of EQ, IMO that's a huge improvement and you can probably make a patch that sounds good with all the acoustic models because you don't have to EQ the boomy sound out of them which was far worse on the J200 than it was on the D28 with the previous models. Now they have body not boom.
I did notice when looking at Workbench that the 12-string models seem to be detuned more than they were on the previous firmware, but perhaps that's only my imagination.
Here's a test for all to guess.
Attached are two recordings I made with Reaper using an HD500 as the audio interface. Both tracks use the latest HD500 firmware v2.02. Both were recorded using the preset 5B Piezo Acoustic in the Bass/Aco/Vocal factory setlist (I turned the Delay off).
One recording uses my 1972 Martin D-28 acoustic guitar (Indian rosewood), with after market Fishman under-saddle pickups installed in 1993. It is connected to the HD500 using the Guitar input.
The other track uses my JTV59 with the latest v1.8 firmware. It is connected to the HD500 via VDI. The selected Input is Variax. I am using the comparable Martin D-28 6 string (Acoustic Model 1, Brazilian rosewood).
Which is which? Which do you prefer?
I am going to guess track 3 is the variax and 4 is the actual acoustic?
I can hear both, but the volume is a bit low.
I say Track4 is your real guitar.
Track 3 sounds like the Variax models to me.
Yeah, I can hear them--I think Track 3 is the Martin--can't say I like one better than the other--Track 3 might have a better overall spectrum of sound, if that makes any sense ![]()
Track 4 sounds like the model, but I like it better. As the promo material points out, the models incorporate miking the guitar in addition to the piezo, which is all you're getting from your real D-28. Plus I think I heard a little digital sizzle artifact at one point, which gives away the model.
Thanks for posting these.
Sorry about the recording quality - the volume sounded good in my studio. Now that I am playing it through my laptop I can see I need a sound engineer!
Track3 is the JTV. Track4 is the real Martin. Frankly, I prefer the JTV model (especially at good volume levels).
There is no possible way that Track 4 is not the real guitar.
If Track 4 is the JTV, I will eat my hat and place an order immediately. But I know that it isn't.
Well, so much for the hype around the modeling being better than the original with only a piezo. When I initially listened to them I was leaning towards track 3 as the JTV, but then my head took over.
Interesting comparison!
