Variax 500 and Pod HD

Hi,

I've had a Variax 500 for a few years and it's finally time for me to get a Pod to get some more sounds out of it. But I am little concerned after some searches took me to threads such as this: http://line6.com/support/message/275634 regarding firmware issues with the V500.

Do you have any advice on what I should do and what products I should purchase? I have never connected the Variax to a PC and all my computers run Win 7 64. Are there any compatibility issues I should be aware of, and is there any way of figuring out whether my particular Variax has issues?

PS my dream pod would let me go to clean telecaster through a vox sound to a les paul with delay and an extra high volume output in one operation. Is this possible with both the HD models and the XT?

Due to space constraints I want to get rid of my guitar amplifier altogether and use headset/computer when at home and the PA when with a band. Should this influence my choice of Pod?

I have a feeling I should get an XT Live instead since it seems guaranteed to work with the guitar, but any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Variax 500 and Pod HD

I have an HD 500 as well as a Variax 500. I run the Workbench and HD500-Edit from a PC (Win XP) without any issues. I'm pretty sure that this setup will work with Win 7 too.

I'm using my Variax/HD combination, just as you described. At home with phones or direct into my DAW. On stage i plug it into the console, always using the direct mode on the HD. My bandmate uses the combination Variax 400 + POD XT-Live and i must say that the HD sounds way better, simply more natural, as the XTL always produces some kind of hiss . . still usable but not perfect. Editing the HD itself is much easier and more effectiv than the XTL, which i only can safely edit via computer and USB.

With these tools you can program any combination of guitar+amp and recall it with pressing just one single switch. I bought both items used for 250$ each. Unbeatable!

    :-)
