Your comment about using the right tool for the job is spot on however I don't have the luxury of utilizing several different guitars when playing with the group I'm involved with (Christian pop, for a teen Mass every Sunday). Physical performing space is at a premium making it difficult to manage several guitars and we often move from a quiet contemplative number where an acoustic sound is ideal to a more upbeat, rock-like song that fairly shouts "use a solid-body electric" without a lot of time between numbers to switch instruments... and, there's no roadie/guitar tech standing by ready to hand me a different guitar anyway.

I'm not much of a techician but from a layman's point of view I reasoned that if Line 6 can make a single Variax sound like screaming Strat or a 12 string Guild acoustic at the turn of dial, I'd hope they could apply the same ingenuity to the Spider IV.  That, apparently isn't the case but happily fflbrgst's suggestion gets me close enough.
