help from any FRFR QSC K12 (preferably) users

I have been using my HD500 with my Mesa 2:90 poweramp into (2) 2x12's and have been really quite pleased with the results. I just picked up a QSC K12 after hearing such great things about it and FRFR in general. I am just wondering if someone who uses this type of setu can give me any pointer on getting a good to OR POSSIBLY even share a few patches.

 

I am in Studio mode .....etc...etc and have tried patches that I used to use just through my headphones that sounded great. I have also created a few (really, really quick) patches from scratch to try to get something good. I must not be doing somethign correctly as they sound pretty lifeless throught the QSC K12.

 

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi

     

    I use 2 QSC K12s and I'm really impressed with them.

     

    To start with, can you make sure the switches on the back on the QSC K12 are set to "Normal" and "Flat" as these are the settings I use which work very well. Basically, what you hear on the headphones should be the same as what is coming out of the speakers. Are you using the balanced inputs and outputs as well ? They plug into the top 2 sockets of the QSC K12.

      Hi V_Fluffy,

       

      Yes, I have the K12 set to Normal, Flat & Line (instead of Mic). I also have my HD500 set to Studio/Direct and am connecting from HD500 XLR out (left) using XLR obviously.

       

      Certainly part of the problem is that I am used to listening to (2) 2x12's and now I am only hearing the one K12. I would get a pair but wanted to try one out first.

       

      Are you able to get that "amp in the room" feel with it and the thump and air being pushed feeling?

      Hi Fluffy,

       

      I would love to try a out a couple of your presets when you get a chance.

       

      I re-read your comment above Are you using the balanced inputs and outputs as well ? They plug into the top 2 sockets of the QSC K12.

       

      I am just simply coming out of the HD500 XLR left into the top leftmost input on the K12...channel A...the one that say Mic/Line In A (and I have the switch set to Line)...is this correct>

       

      I just tested one of my U2 patches for "Bad" which sounds great through my power amp and cabs....I had to add the cab back in for the FRFR and use the full amp sim and switch to Studio/Direct, but it just doesn't sound anywhere as good.

       

      What volume level do you have your K12 set at? I know the AC30TB is not quite as loud as some of the other amp models but I have:

       

      AC30 Channel Volume at 95%

      AC30 Master at 100%

      Drive at 40-45%

      HD500Master Volume at 100%

      Volume Pedal wide open

      K12 Channel A at 2 o'clock or roughly 7/10

      K12 on it's side slanted facing up at me

       

       

      ...and I can play comfortably in front of it....not really that loud at all....must be something I'm not doing right

        The XLRs are at mic level (much lower than line level) - try switching the K12's Input A to "Mic" instead of "Line." Watch out because this will be like a 40+ dB boost - turn down the K12's level first.

         

        Also, if you are using a single XLR output, the HD does not mix stereo to mono - you'll be missing half of your signal if you have stereo stuff.

         

        If you ever decide to use two K12s, you can just connect one as Left and one as Right, and switch both to "Mic" and you'll be set. But in the meantime I suggest, instead of using the XLR output, using one of the 1/4" outputs - since if you only plug in one of those, it does mix to mono. Connect it to the K12 (in "Line" mode unless it's too quiet; if so use "Mic"). This will make sure you get the whole signal (both stereo sides).

    1. Put the speakers on stands with the horns at ear level. This gives you the full sound and avoids low frequency booming.

     

    The QSC K12 is like many PA speakers; sound radiates in a narrow cone. Within the cone the sound is normal, ouside the cone the sound level falls off sharply, especially the higher frequencies. The specs for the K12 show a 75 degree cone (K10 is 90 degrees); that's only 37.5 degrees each side of the middle. You have your speaker on the floor and it is very likely that your ears are outside the sound cone.

     

    Another problem with the speaker on the floor is that low freqencies will boom.

     

    With two speakers on stands, keep them close together and turn them so they are both pointing forward but pointing away from each other at the same angle as the speaker sound cone. This will give the best sound coverage and will minimize phase distortion between the speakers. Either that or put the speakers very far apart.

     

    Be sensitive to other band members when you place your speakers. The drummer will not appreciate your guitar speaker place right next to his head.

     

    2. To get a good dynamic range, set the power amp volume (K12 Gain) to maximum and use the POD HD MASTER volume to set your desired sound level.

     

    If the power amp volume is lower than maximum, it will limit the peaks coming from the source (your POD HD) giving a very flat compressed sound.

     

    3. If you there is a PA system for the room, send your POD HD balanced outputs to the room PA (longer cables) and send the unbalanced outputs to your on-stage speakers (shorter cables).

     

    This will allow the room PA to boost your volume, if necessary. (Not usually necessary with most guitar players.)

    I am by no means an expert but I have 2 K12s and they are magic..!!

     

    I was under the impression though that it is best to run the HD 500 at maxmum output volume to get the best signal to noise ratio. So what I do is run the unbalanced stereo out of the POD into the stereo inputs of my A&H Mixer. I can then run the K12s at maximum and the POD at maximum and adjust the overall volume from the mixer. This also allows me to make subtle EQ adjustments (Highs - Mids - Lows) on the mixer - but I usually run it flat.

     

    Best to start making patches from scratch. Definitley check out MeAmBobbo's guide and patches. Up to now when using dual amps I have put a 20ms digital delay on one path to give me fatter more lively tone. It is a matter of experimenting (with guidance  )
